application/pdfMs. Sonomi Oketani, a maternity nurse well-known for promoting breast-feeding, and her followers indicated that abnormalities such as a stunted frenulum of the lip or tongue (a tongue-tie) might cause much trouble in breast-feeding for infants. Some oral surgeons and otorhinolaryngologists have reported excellent results after frenotomies. However, some pediatrists have thrown doubt on the necessity of many such operations, noting that surgeons have no definite criteria on which to base their decisions to perform such frenotomies. In this study, we performed a clinico-statistical observation and conducted a questionnaire survey. The subjects of the observation were 77 infants who had received frenotomies at Matsumoto Dental College Hospital, and the mothers of these infants were asked to participate in the questionnaire survey. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the infants who received the frenotomy were one or two months old. 2. 49 of the infants were treated for shortened upper lip frenula, 18 for tongue-tie, and 10 received both operations. 3. A little under 80 percent of cases had been referred by maternity nurses who engaged in breast-feeding instruction. 4. About 40 percent of mothers complained of the baby's poor suckling, about 10 percent complained of "breast trouble", and the remainder expressed both complaints. 5. In about 80 percent of the cases, the mothers noticed changes for the better within one week of the operation. This suggestes that above all, early plastic correction of an upper lip frenulum results in a marked improvement in breast-feeding for infants who suffer from enfolding of the lip. 6. With proper management, operation related stress was only slight, and no significant complications were observed. 7. In oder to establish criteria on which to base decisions for the necessity of such operations, movements of the lip or tongue should be investigated quantitatively.journal articl

application/pdfTwo kinds of pulp devitalizer, "Neo-Arsen Black (NAB)" and "Neo-Paraform Paste (NPP)", have been modified to change from asbestos to polyethylene fibers as their primary component because of health risks associated with the former. The effect of pulp devitalization with both "Modified Neo-Arsen Black (M-NAB)" and "Modified Neo-Paraform Paste (M-NPP)" were histopathologically evaluated, using 160 teeth of 10 dogs. The results were compared with the findings of the specimens made using two types of original NAB and NPP as controls. When evaluated, these histopathological data showed that both types of M-NAB and M-NPP have the same effect on the pulp as both original NAB and NPP, and are valuable as pulp devitalizers.journal articl

application/pdfHousehold electric appliances have become increasingly more popular to consumers. Even telephones are now considered indispensable features of household interiors. Functionally some appliances are even becoming more like humans by means of built-in fuzzy logic computers. The astonishing progress of computer science leads to speculation about the day when computers will even dominate human beings. Likewisel medical treatment is also advancing rapidly. The demands of patients have increased inregards not only to function but also aesthetic appearance. The face is the most important feature in determining the character of human beings. Since the teeth are an essential constituent of the face, in addition to ordinary dental restorations, they must also be treated esthetically. The color of gingiva is also important for healty beauty. In the following review, the author mentioned the relation between esthetic consciousness and the mental state of patients, the history and prospects of dental esthetics, the introduction of color science, the effects of light and color matching in dentistry. He then considered why dental doctors must measure the color of the oral cavity.journal articl

application/pdfThe oral cavity, on open-type organ contact with antibodies from the outside world through mucous membrane, has been reported to work as a neutralisirender antibody and Agglutination Antibody, and also as a defensive element against the invasion, settling and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria or other foreign bodies. It is, however, not yet clear as to what kind of role is played by Ig contained in the colostrum in the settling oral flora or caries activity whth regard to newborn or an infant. As a preliminary study to determine the role the amount of IgA in breast milk is playing in babies caries activity and the settling of oral flora, we examined the relationship of colostrum Ig with the amount of Ig contained in a babies saliva and the pH of that saliva. As result, the following findings have been made: 1. Although no what values in amount of saliva Ig were observed 24 hours after birth, an increasing tendency was noticed over the passage of time. 2. Although no correlation between IgA content of colostrum, IgA content of saliva and falling was observed either one month or three months after birth, the correlation coefficient was found to have become negative with the passage of time. 3. Although the difference in the Ig content of saliva caused by variation in the breast-milk ratio was not clearly noticeable, a tendency for the low breast-milk ratio group to show a higher Ig content of saliva was observed. 4. The group with the lower breast-milk ratio was found to have a pH value distributed over a low range of values. This tendency was particularly distinct three months after birth. 5. Whereas no change in pH was obseved with the passage of time in the case of the group with a breast-milk ratio of 100%, a distinct tendency of falling pH was ovserved in the case of the group fed entirely with artificial milk (i.e., 0% breast milk).journal articl

application/pdfA study was made of 203 bridges which had been fabricated for patients at the Prosthodontic Clinic of Matsumoto Dental College during 1989. Some of results were as follows; 1) 47.8% of the patients were males and 52.2% were females. 2) 93.1% of the patients were between 20 and 69 years old. 3) 62.2% of the bridges were fabricated as 3-unit bridges. 4) 74.9% were fabricated as 1-pontic bridges. 5) There were fewer bridge retainers for the lower anterior segment than for other segments. 6) 50.4% of bridge retainers were fabricated as full cast crowns. 7) 51.7% were fabricated for non vital teeth. 8) Of pontics, 28.0% were replaced for the upper incisor segment.journal articl

application/pdfIt is difficult to treat partially edentulous patients who have a reduced posterior vertical space related to the extrusion of unoposed maxillary posterior teeth because the extruded teeth obliterate the entire posterior interocclusal distance. Tuberosities, or the severe extrusion of maxillary posterior teeth, result when missing mandibular teeth are not replaced for a long time. The loss of posterior teeth drives the mandible forward and upward and exerts undue forces on the anterior teeth. The removable partial overdenture has been used with endodontically treated teeth. The application of the overdenture concept to removable partial denture treatmentplanning has preserved the surrounding alveolar bone. This article describes the diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, and restorative overlay partial denture approach for the treatment of severe extrusion of the maxillary posterior teeth.journal articl

application/pdfCorrosion tests were conducted on 18K gold alloys, prepared with thirteen commercial plus-metal alloy specimens and immersed in 0.05% hydrochloric acid and 1% lactic acid for 7 days at 37℃. Quantitative analysis of the metal elements released in solutions was performed by I.C.P. method. The amounts of released metal was studied on the relation ship of alloying methods and casting methods. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Release of metal elements from 18K gold alloys (without zinc) is caused by copper oxide (Cu_2o), which was oxidized at alloying and casting in the atomsphere. 2. Tamman's discorrosion rule is ineffective on melting metal. Only deoxidization materials pprevent oxidation of gold alloys. 3. The oxides produced at melting time mix in castings, without exception. 4. If mixed oxides are unstable, the release of metal elements rise 100-10000 fold. 5. All dental castings should be cast in the total absens of oxygen. If impossible, then all dental alloys should contain deoxidization materials.journal articl
