application/pdfA study was made of 207 bridges which had been fabricated for patients at the Prosthodontic Clinic of Matsumoto Dental College during 1988. Some of results were as follows; 1) 47.3% of the patients were males and 52.7% were females. 2) 92.8% of the patients were between 20 and 69 years old. 3) 65.2%of the bridges were fabricated as 3-unit bridges. 4) 77.8% were fabricated as 1-pontic bridges. 5) There were fewer bridge retainers for the lower anterior segment than for other segments. 6) 52.3% of bridge retainers were fabricated as full cast crowns. 7) 51.7% were fabricated for non vital teeth. 8) Of pontics, 27.8% were replaced for the lower molar segment.journal articl

application/pdfSome patients complain of pain and soreness in chewing and of a general inability to function with their dentures. In such cases a resilient base to the denture is frequently successful in relieving pain in function. Polyphosphazine fluoroelastomer is a semiorganic rubber with a phosphorus-nitrogen backbone. Curing is by crosslinking of the fluorocarbon side chain using multifunctional acrylics and peroxides. Physical and mechanical properties are equal or superior to commercially available products. This article is the first report of our study for clinical use. In addition, the color stability in the various solutions are discussed.journal articl

application/pdfThe purpose of this study was to develop a new, simplified and accurate method of dental cast analysis by combining lower incisor position and anterior-posterior jaw position upon the existing arch length using cephalometric analysis. This cast analysis utilized "occlusograms", which are positive-print 1:1 photographs of the occlusal aspect of dental casts, taken with a DS C-618-A PHOTOPET. The samples used in this study were taken from 16 girls (4th grade in elementary school) for the normal occlusion group and 15 girl patients (the 3rd and 4th grade) showing Class II division 1 malocclusion before orthodontic treatment. Two-year longitudinal cephalometric data were utilized to forecast the growth prediction for normal occlusion and Class II malocclusion groups. The results showed, on the average, a 2.1mm decrease in A-B(OP) measurement, after two-year head gear treatment for the Class II group. In cases of occlusion, an occlusogram is a useful tool for accurately estimating the total arch length discrepancy, the degree of anchorage and the individual arch form. Furthermore, occlusograms should be used with short-range growth prediction for young Angle Class II patients.journal articl

A Clinical Evaluation of a Light-Cured Plastic Temporary Filling Material (Fermit®)

application/pdfFermit, a kind of a visible-light-cured resin, has recently been used as a temporary filling material. This clinical study was done to determine whether or not Fermit was superior to Dura Seal which was previously reported by us in this journal. The prepared cavities were sealed with Fermit for an average of 11.0 days. Fermit was found to have the same properties as Dura Seal, except for many losses of the seal (17.6% of the total) and difficulty in filling.journal articl

application/pdfWe carried out a statistical study of 80 cases of general anesthesia in cleft lip and palate surgery at the central operating room of the Kobe Children's Hospital from April 1987 to October 1988. These cases can be classified by operative procedure, into four groups: 21 cases of lip repair, 29 cases of palatoplasty, 25 cases of secondary repair of cleft lip, and 5 cases of secondary repair of cleft palate. There were slightly more females (56%) than males (44%). The average age of lip repair cases was from 3-5 months: for palatoplasty it was 1-2 years of age. Associated deformities and complications mainly observed before anesthesia, included ventricular septal defect (4 cases), Pierre Robin Syndrome (2 cases), and mild fever (5 cases). For premedication, a single administration of atropine was used in the majority of the lip repair & palatoplasty cases. However, in secondary repair of cleft lip cases a combination of atropine and a minor tranquilizer was most commonly used. Induction of anesthesia was carried out by a method of slow induction with nitrous oxide, oxygen, and halothane in 70 cases (87.5%). Maintenance was achieved with nitrous oxide, oxygen, and enflurane in 71 cases (about 90%), because of the operator use of epinephrine in the surgical field for hemostasis. Orotracheal intubation was performed in all cases. The duration of anesthesia was between 1.5-2 hours in most of the cases. The most common complication observed during or after anesthesia was fever or excitement; however, in the postoperative period no serious complications were observed.journal articl

application/pdfThree-dimensional reconstruction of CT images has been actively pursued in recent years. In Japan, soft ware has been developed for 3-D image reconstruction and, as a result, several reports have also been done. We have used 3-D soft ware incorporated into CT scanner at MDC since 1988. This soft ware had originally been developed by Toshiba Medical Co. as a part of the image processing system for the TCT-60A-EX and TCT-700S (CT scanner, Toshiba). It performs with easy handling, 3-D image reconstruction in a short time. The shading, lighting, and viewing direction of 3-D images and set at will. Moreover, 3D-distance, angle and volume are measurable on the 3-D images. We will report here the outline of the procedure and the optimal conditions for image processing, we will also show some clinical cases.journal articl

Effect of Stannous Chloride on the Twitch of Frog Cardiac Muscle

    Get PDF
application/pdfStannous chloride (SnCl_2) increases the calcium (Ca) entry into motor nerve terminals. Three kinds of Ca channels have been found in nerves (i.e., L-, N-, and T-types). To determine whether or not L-type Ca channels participate in the SnCl_2-induced increase in Ca entry, the effect of SnCl_2 on the twitch of the bullfrog auricular muscle was investigated and compared with that of the modulator selective to each type of the Ca channels. Both nifedipine (20μM) and nicardipine (20μM), L-type Ca channel blockers, inhibited the twitch. Although Bay K 8644 (20μM), a Ca agonist of the L-type Ca channels, augmented the twitch, SnCl_2 (0.1mM) did not. NiCl_2 (0.1mM), a T-type Ca channel blocker, had no effect on the twitch. The results obtained suggest that SnCl_2 may not activate the L-type Ca channels and that SnCl_2 might be likely to enhance the Ca entry into the motor nerve terminals by activating the N-type channels.journal articl
