application/pdfThe purpose of this study was to investigate morphological changes of dentin and enamel surfaces, and temperature increments of the pulp in extracted mandibular incisor teeth irradiated with pulsed Nd: YAG laser. The results were as follows. (1) No changes of enamel surface were observed in non-coated laser absorption samples irradiated with 3, 6, 12J/P. (2) Circle-like structures on enamel and dentin surface were observed in coated laser absorption group irradiated with 3, 6, 12J/P. (3) Magnification of rough enamel surface was observed to be in proportion to the intensity of radiation. (4) Temperature in the pulp of non-coated teeth rose above 100℃, however that of black-coated teeth decreased by one-half. (5) Secondary ascendant point was observed 7-8 seconds after irradiation in the coated teeth group.journal articl

application/pdfAcid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2., AcP) is widely distributed in several tissues such as prostate, placenta, liver, spleen and leucocyte. Their activities are distinguished as five isozymes (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) according to electro-mobility on disk gel electrophoresis. In this study we determined the AcP activity on the root surface tissue of 11 extracted human premolars (subjects 12-17 years old) as a standard activity of the AcP in the healthy root surface condition. The average activity (nmol/min/mg) of 11 teeth was determined to be 23.6±9.3 (mean±SD), and the activity was reduced to 18.2±7.5 by the addition of lOmM L-tartrate. Therefore 77% of the total activity represented tartrate resistant AcP activity. On polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis, isozyme bands of 1, 3 and 5, compared to leucocyte isozyme pattern, were demonstrated as the general pattern of AcP activity on the root surface of human tooth. The color development of the active bands, 1 and 3 were reduced by the addition of L-tartrate, while 5 was not reduced and identified as tartrate resistant AcP.journal articl

application/pdfOne of the most important factors which determines the success of complete denture prosthodontics is fitting the denture to the tissues. Poorly fitting dentures, irritation, and other discomforts currently are treated by dentists with the use of tissue conditioners and soft liners. It is desirable for tissue conditioner to adapt to the oral mucosa as it heals and also absorbs stresses during mastication. Tissue conditioners generally consist of a polymer powder mixed with a liquid compound of a plasticiser and a penetrant. In most conditioners, the powder is an acrylic resin polymer, usually poly (ethyl methacrylate); the plasticiser is an aromatic ester, usually butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate; and the penetrant is ethyl alcohol. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the detailed composition of seven tissue conditioners.journal articl

application/pdfAlthough "A Century of Dental Art" by well-known British dental manufacturer Claudius Ash, Sons&Co. which appeared in 1921 is booklet of only 65 pages, it is referred to in many books on dental history. The following is a review of this booklet, which is divided into two parts. The first is a "Memoir" about Claudius Ash and early developments in dentistry. The second, entitled "A Century of Dental Art, 1820-1921", gives us instruction of dental supplies of mineral teeth, chairs, cabinets, cements, amalgams, impression materials, rubbers, extracting instruments, operating instruments, dental engines and engine instruments, burs and castings. Many dental supplies were invented during this period.journal articl

application/pdfThe soft liners have provided comfort for many patients who have not been able to wear a denture with a hard resin base without pain. The soft liner, however, has not fully yielded the desired level of satisfaction as a means of reducing traumatic impact. Many of the difficulties arise from deficiencies in the material itself. For example, lack of the resilient, color changes and the fact that it peels away from the resin base. The authors examined eleven cases of the Polyorefin soft lining material used for denture bases after insertion.journal articl
