application/pdfRoot ZX (ZX), a newly manufactured electric root canal length measuring device, has been recently introduced to the market. The manufacturer claims that it can accurately measure the root canal length in existence of electrolytes such as pulp tissue, blood or necrotic tissue in the root canal. This study was done in the clinic of Matsumoto Dental College to determine whether or not ZX had the properties claimed by the manufacturer, using Root Canal Meter (RCM) as control. The results obtained were as follows: 1. When the root canal length measured by a small size reamer (#25 or 30) was compared with that measured by a finally used reamer, in 12 of 20 pulpectomy cases (60.0%) the latter was 0.26±0.18mm longer than the former. On the other hand, in 9 of 13 infected root canal treatment cases (69.2%) at the root canal enlargement, the root canal length measured by a finally used reamer was 0.41±0.29mm longer than that measured by a small size reamer. 2. The differences between the root canal length remeasured at the time of root canal filling and that at the first appointment were examined. In 15 of 20 pulpectomy cases (75.0%), the root canal length of root canal filling was 0.67±0.78mm shorter than that measured at the first appointment. On the other hand, in 9 of 13 infected root canal treatment cases (69.2%), the root canal length at root canal filling was 0.52±0.37mm shorter than that measured at the first appointment. In either case, the root canal length of the first appointment tended to be shorter than that at root canal filling. 3. When a reamer tip was inserted into the root canal until the ZX meter pointed to 0.5 manufacture's the apical constriction reading according to the manual, the RCM reading was also examined. In the case of root canal enlargement, 10 pulpectomy cases (50.0%) and 5 infected root canal treatment cases (38.5%) indicated 40μA or greater of RCM. At the time of root canal filling, 8 pulpectomy cases (40.0%) and 7 infected root canal treatment cases (53.8%) were 40μA or greater. In approximately half of the cases, it was recognized that the reamer tips overextended beyond the apical foramen. 4. The location of the tip of gutta-percha point was examined using a dental X-ray taken immediately after root canal filling was performed. In 11 pulpectomy cases (61.1%) and 5 infected root canal treatment cases (41.7%), the master corn tips extruded from the radiographic root apex. 5. It may be concluded that ZX can measure the root canal length in existence of electrolytes but is somewhat affected by electrolytes.journal articl

application/pdfAspergillus, which is a fungus of the Ascomycetes class, is most commonly encountered in sites including the human paranasal sinuses, liver, spleen, bone, meninges, and especially in the lung. Whereas fungal infection of the paranasal sinuses has been increasing, aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus is rare. However, in recent years, reports of aspergillosis in the field of maxillofacial sugery have been increasing. In this report, we presented a case of aspergillosis appearing in the maxillary sinus of a 71-year-old female. She was referred to our Department with the chief complaint of left cheek pain. X-ray and CT examinations showed a diffuse radio-opacity and calcified materials in the left maxillary sinus. Under clinical diagnosis of sinusitis or supposed aspergillosis, the radical Caldwell-Luc operation was carried out. Histopathological examination of removed materials revealed this lesion to be aspergillosis. Subsequently, the patient has been free from recurrence during the six month period following the operation.journal articl

application/pdfPeriocline^[○!R] has been widely used for several years to treat periodontitis by means of the Local Drug Delivery System (LDDS), because of its high susceptibility to the bacteria causing periodontitis. Systemic administration of antibiotics (Tetracycline) for GJP creates a problem. However, our initial preparation of advanced GJP did not clinical improvement. Thus, we have taked pus discharged from the periodontal pocket of a patient with gingival abscess, separated main bacteria (P. intermedia, A. actinomycetemcomitans and Capnocytophaga sp.), and investigated the effect of Periocline^[○!R] on these main bacteria by applying it to the patient clinically. A case of a 24 year-old, male: first visit May 22, 1992-chief complaint, tooth mobility. The patient had gingival abscess with periodontal pocket (6~8mm) 521 1 1246 1246 Growth inhibitory zones obtained by MIC test were 32-52mm in diameter. Periocline^[○!R] (50 mg/tooth) applied eight times weekly reduced the level of GI and pocket depth (2~4mm).journal articl

application/pdfWilliam Hunter (1717-1783), ten years older than his brother John, was a famous obstetrician and eminent teacher of anatomy in London. He gave private anatomy lectures in the mid-eighteenth century. In 1959, notes of his lectures written by his student, were put up for sale in Adelaide. In 1972, the facsimiles of those notes were published as a book, because those notes have value as historical materials of anatomy, I reviewed this book. Miss Nell Dowd who owns those notes says, "The originals of the lectures reproduced in this book are in two vellum-covered notebooks. The first contains 185 leaves, numbered on the recto side 1-185. There is writing on the recto side only, the verso side bing blank, except for a note on the page opposite the asterisk on page 1, "Sharp is not of this Opinion". The second notebook consists of 114 leaves with writing on the recto side only, followed by several blank leaves. Twenty of the 114 leaves are numbered on the recto side 1-20. The page opposite page 2 has the date 1752 written on it. The manuscripts contain forty-eight lectures under the title "Hunter's Lectures of Anatomy". My on those manuscripts I have come to the conclusion that the lecture notes were taken down in some form of shorthand by Charles White of Manchester, in William Hunter's course which started on January 20, 1752. Were transcribed later, either by Dr White or by a member of his family". 1-11 Lectures are of a general nature, 12-48 Lectures are more detailed. The general lectures consist and of Anatomy, Blood, Artery, Vein, Lymphatick, Gland, Nerve, Muscle, Bone, Skeleton, Cranium discussion. The detailed lectures discuss Bones of the Cranium, Bones of the face, Os Hyoides, Larynx, Muscles of the Head & Face, Muscles of Os Hyoides & Tongue, Salivary Glands, Nose, and so on.
