application/pdfIn Japan, people are living longer and require dental services for more decades of their life than ever before. The disposable income for dental service has risen steadily, even though people have a reduced average income during their retirement years. Through education, financial stability, people have become increasingly concerned with their oral health. Elderly Japanese become more able and willing to invest much in oral health care. The purpose of this study was to compare dental health beliefs between wearers of insurance-provided removable dentures and wearers of other removable dentures. A total of 182 patients with removable dentures who attended the Prosthodontic Clinic of the Showa University Dental Hospital were interviewed followed by the oral examination. Patients with removable dentures had little concern for oral health. We found no significant differences in dental beliefs between wearers of insurance-provided dentures and wearers of other dentures. The results suggest a need for patient education by dentists, especially for patients who wear non-insurance-provided removable dentures.journal articl

application/pdfAfter connecting a small image-processing system which was developed at Matsumoto Dental College to an 8-bit (256) capacity conventional image scanner, we conducted a basic study on the use of CRT in electronic image archiving of dental radiographs and in diagnosis. We visual it evaluated whether the CRT image quality was adequate for the detection of abnormal trabecular pattern of mandible (lesion) by comparison with the pantomograph using a contrast paper film which is widely used for examination of the jaw and facial region. Forty films for individuals with lesions and 40 films for individuals without lesions, selected by radiologist, was entered into and evaluated with the small image-processing system. The visual evaluation was performed by 2 other dental radiologists and 4 oral surgeons. The accuracy of image reading on the CRT was slightly higher than that obtained with the films. The dental radiologists who selected the films had a slightly different understanding as to the nature of lesions compared to the oral surgeon, observers, and this difference was reflected in their assessments as to the presence or absence of lesions, when the pantomographic image density covers a wide range, it appears to be necessary to set the intensity level of the transmission-type image scanner at 10-bit (1024) or above.journal articl

application/pdfDental implants are now widely used for dental rehabilitation, but in some cases insufficient planning and complications result in poor prognoses. Paresthesia, which can be caused by nerve injury, is one of the postoperative complications. We report a case in which we applied a blade-vent implant into the mandibular molar region taking into account the lateral branch of the inferior alveolar nerve. The postoperative course was uneventful without paresthesia. In the preoperative examinations, extreme precautions while performing x-ray examinations is necessary to avoid postoperative complications such as paresthesia. We believe that the preoperative evaluation, surgical procedure, and postoperative care play very crucial roles the success of implantation.journal articl

Cytochemical Study on Guanylyl Cyclase Activity in Rabbit Taste Bud Cell : Effects of i) cadmium, mercury and zinc ions, and ii) concentration of exogenous manganese

application/pdfSome characteristics of the membrane-bound guanylyl cyclase activity in taste bud cells of rabbit foliate papillae were cytochemically examined. The enzymatic activity was almost completely inhibited by 1mM CdCl_2, HgCl_2 or ZnCl_2 and recovered by simultaneous addition of 2mM dithiothreitol, indicating the presence of sulfhydryl groups required for enzyme activity. The activity appeared to be the same whether 1mM or 3mM MnCl_2 was added. It was even observed to a similar extent in the absence of exogenous Mn^; a formation of a 'metalloenzyme' during the experimental procedure was hinted at.journal articl

application/pdfAdenoid cystic carcinoma arises most often in the palatine gland of the minor salivary gland. We report here a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma in the maxillary anterior alveolar region, which has been rarely documented. A 68-year-old woman complained of a mass at the maxillary anterior alveolar region, which showed gradually expansion over the past 3 years. Clinical examination revealed a non-tender mass measuring 15×15mm, and histological diagnosis was adenoid cystic carcinoma. The lesion was excised with margins of normal tissue under general anesthesia.journal articl

application/pdfForeign bodies found in the maxillary sinus include fractured dental roots, instruments used for canal treatment and root canal filling material. If such foreign bodies remain in the maxillay sinus for long periods sinusitis may occur. Radiographic examination is necessary to ascertain the position of the foreign body and to determine its shape, size and position and to evaluate diachronic changes accurately. We reported here a case of canal filling material in the maxillary sinus accompanied by sinusitis.journal articl

application/pdfIn the previous papers (the 1st, 2nd and 3rd reports) 234 books and journals concerning the biography of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi were described (Matsumoto Shigaku, Vol. 13, pp. 1~34, 1987: Vol. 15, pp. 217~231, 1989: Vol. 20, pp. 80~99, 1994). In addition to these, 38 books including both very old and new-published ones were introduced in this paper. Among them 5 books described bellow were thought to be important. 1) Shinoto, Y. and Kosaka, M.: Great Biologists and Biology. pp. 258~260.
