    A Note on The Genus Evolvulus (Convolvulaceae) In Java, Indonesia

    According to the Flora of Java, there is only one species of Evolvulus in Java, namely Evolvulus alsinoides. Since then, a second species was reported in 2017 from Universitas Indonesia, Depok, West Java, as an alien naturalized species. Some recent field studies have been conducted to provide updated taxonomic information of the genus on this island. The field observations were carried out in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Jogjakarta, and East Java from March to December 2019. The herbarium studies were also conducted in Herbarium Bogoriense, Herbarium of Bogor Botanic Gardens, Herbarium Bandungense, and Herbarium of the Department of Biology, Universitas Indonesia. Our study reveals one newly recorded species of Evolvulus in Java already grown in cultivation, namely E. glomeratus Nees & Mart. subsp. grandiflorus (Parodi) Ooststr. Besides that, Evolvulus nummularius is now also reported to occur in other sites of West Java and extended to Central Java. An updated key to Evolvulus in Java, descriptions to both species, photographs, and brief discussions are provided

    Application of Biological Nitrogen Fixation Cyanobacteria To Paddy Plant Cultivated Under Deep-Water Culture System

     The Biological Nitrogen Fixing (BNF) cyanobacteria can reduce atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium. This ability makes BNF cyanobacteria a potential eco-friendly N-source for soil-planted pad-dy. Apart from a few success stories of BNF cyanobacteria applica-tion in the rice field, its role as an ammonium producer is still an open question. There is also a possibility that indeed cyanobacteria biomass which provides nitrogen through the biological decomposing process. This study aimed to analyze the influence of three strains BNF cyanobacteria on paddy grown in the Deep-Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic system. Yoshida Nutrient Solution was used as a growth medium with the application of 0, 45.7, and 91.4 gL-1 of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) with five replications. The result showed that inter-action between cyanobacteria and nitrogen significantly influenced the total nitrogen of paddy plant, but not the paddy plant height, the num-ber of tillers, and biomass. Cyanobacterial filaments were found most-ly attached to the paddy root rather than floated in the DWC system. Paddy treated with cyanobacteria had more lateral root than control. The result suggested that cyanobacteria support paddy growth indi-rectly through nitrogen deposition in plant tissue and root development.Â

    Bird Diversity: The Potential of Avitourism Reserves for Bird Conservation in Curup Tenang, South Sumatera, Indonesia

    Birds have a fairly wide living habitat, including water-falls. Curup Tenang is a waterfall tourism site which has a wildlife habitat suitable for birds. In The Curup Tenang tourism site, the number of visitors has decreased over years. Birds are one of the wildlife animals that have ecological values, potential tourism, and cultural values. The diversity of birds in this tourist location have not been recorded. Meanwhile, by increasing knowledge and data-bases regarding the diversity of birds in this area can be an addi-tional reference for the development strategy in the Curup Tenang tourism site so that it becomes a distinctive attraction for visitors. This study aimed to determine the diversity of birds that never been recorded before and to conduct a potential support of avitourism activities. The results of this study can be used as a guideline to study the potential of avitourism. The diversity of birds found in Curup Tenang consisted of forty-eight species belong to twenty-seven families, while three of them cited as protected bird species. This study concluded that Curup Tenang contains a high diversity of birds and it has a great potential to be developed into an attraction of tourism.Â

    Phylogenetic Relationships of Ornamental Chaetodontidae in The South Coastal of West Java, Indonesia

    Marine ornamental trade has been developing for several years with Indonesia as one of the major exporter countries. Among the popular marine ornamental fish in the local and international markets belong to the family of Chaetodontidae. The existence of this family has been reported from several areas in Indonesia. However, no information is available in terms of their phylogenetic relationships of the fish from the south coast of West Java. The aim of this research was to asses the phylogenetic relationships among ornamental fish members of Chaetodontidae in the South Coast of West Java. Fish samples were collected from two trading sites Ujung Genteng and Taman Manalusu. Collected fish were identified using a previously published study. The evolutionary relationships among species were analyzed statistically through phylogenetic analysis based on maximum parsimony algorithm and Kimura 2- Parameter substitution model as implemented in PAUP 4.0 software. Tree branching pattern supported by 1000 bootstraps pseudo-replicates and out-group comparison. Daschyllus trimaculatus used as outgroup species. Based on the study, Chaetodontidae from the South Coast of West Java formed one monophyletic group compared to Dascylus trimaculatus with Chelmon rostratus was the basal species. All the remaining species were the derived species. There are CI and RI value gained. The consistency index (CI) value of this family is 0.5833, and the retention index (RI) is 0.5082.Â

    Effectiveness of Lactic Acid Bacteria to Improve Cyprinus carpio Fingerlings Resistance Against

    Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) cultivation is often hampered by a disease attack, one of them is the attack of Edwarsiella tarda. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be used as an alternative to prevent diseases in fish by increasing the body\u27s resistance. This research aimed to determine the most effective isolates of LAB that increase of the resistance of carp fingerlings to the attack of E. tarda bacteria and see which isolates can produce the highest survival. The LAB isolates used were the result of isolation from the gut of carp. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments with three replications. The fish were immersed with different LAB isolates, CcB7, CcB8, and CcB15 in the same density of 108 cells / mm3. Immersion was carried out for 30 minutes with a frequency of seven days. While during the research, two immersions were carried out before the challenge test against E. tarda bacteria. The parameters observed were the number of leukocytes, hematocrit, erythrocyte, differential leukocytes, survival rate, and clinical symptoms that appeared. The results showed that all LAB isolates used in this study could increase the body resistance of carp against the attacks of E. tarda bacteria. The LAB CcB7 isolate was the most effective for enhancing the body resistance of carp fish withthe highest increase level of  leukocyte, erythrocyte, and hematocrit were 18 ± 0.057,7 ± 0,077, and 0.26± 7.31% respectively. After being challenged with E. tarda bacteria producing mild clinical symptoms, the highest increase is in monocyte and neutrophil cells was 20 and 62% respectively, the highest reduction in lymphocytes was – 9%  and the highest survival rate was 80%.Â

    Distribution and Characteristics of Javan Hawk Eagle Nesting Trees in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, Indonesia

     Javan Hawk Eagle is one of the three keys species of the Gunung Halimun Salak National Park and endemic to the island of Java. Protecting the active Javan Hawk Eagle nesting tree is one of the efforts to increase the success rate of Java Hawk Eagle breeding so that information on the distribution and characteris-tics of Javan Hawk Eagle nesting tree is needed. Field exploration was carried out to determine the existence of the Javan Hawk Eagle nest. There were 10 individuals of Javan Hawk Eagle nesting trees which consisted of 5 species namely Rasamala, Huru, Damar, Leng-sar and Manggong with tree architecture models of rauh, massart, scarrone and aubreville, tree height between 26-55 m and height of nests between 18-41m. The Javan Hawk Eagle nesting trees grow in primary, secondary, and plantation forests in a height between 670- 1295 masl, with a steep and very steep slope, the majority of the dis-tance from the river is less than 100 m and the majority of the dis-tance with ecotone is less than 600 m. Javan Hawk Eagle nest on Damar is the first finding at Gunung Halimun Salak National Park.Â

    The Selection of Ornamental Plant for Landscape Design of Pollination Garden at Bogor Botanic Gardens

       Bogor Botanic Gardens is one of the outstanding green areas in Bogor City. Thousands of plant species are growing and providing suitable habitats and feed for various pollinators, such as butterflies, bees, and wasps. A well-designed pollination garden will benefit the pollinators and also create an educational facility for the community. This study aimed to select and characterize species of flowering plants that effectively attract pollinators, particularly Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, in the pollination garden candidate area. The observa-tion had been carried out on 12 ornamental plant species: Pennisetum purpureum, Cosmos sp., Pachystachys lutea, Cuphea hyssopifolia, Orthosiphon aristatus, Lantana camara, Citrus aurantifolia, Buddleja davidii, Ixora javanica, Nerium oleander, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, and Aglaia odorata. The method for observing pollinators was a standard walking method. Pollinator photos, its number, its visit time, and the plants it visited were recorded. A total of 23 species of Lepidoptera (20 species from 4 families and 3 species were unidentified) and 9 species of Hymenoptera (4 families) were found in the area with the best obser-vation time at 08.30-09.30 (GMT+7). The most visited plants by pollinators were Cuphea hyssopifolia, Lantana camara and Orthosiphon aristatus. Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera preferred blue-purple and bright-orange-yellow flowers. In addition, the flower characters that might influence pollinator visits are also described. The result would be an essential recommendation for plant selection, landscape design, and construction of the pollination garden in Bogor Botanic Gardens.Â

    The First Record of Metaphire Birmanica (Rosa, 1888) in Vietnam, with Notes on Several Earthworm Species

    The Amynthas and Metaphire species recorded in Vietnam have been rechecked based on original descriptions and preserved specimens. As a result, Metaphire birmanica (Rosa, 1888) is recorded in Vietnam for the first time. The species is recognized by having three pairs of spermathecal pores in 5/6/7/8, male pores in xviii, presence of copulatory pouches, no genial markings, and manicate intestinal caeca. In addition, three species have been rechecked and re-assigned to different genera, namely Amynthas tripidoporophoratus (Thai & Nguyen, 1993) comb. nov., Metaphire dranfocana (Do & Huynh, 1993) comb. nov., Metaphire anhumalatana (Thai & Huynh, 1993) comb. nov

    Treatment of PLGA Nanoparticles Ointment-Ethanol Extract of Archidendron pauciflorum in the Wound Healing in Diabetic Mice

    Diabetic wounds lead to severe tissue damage and are diffi-cult to cure. Jengkol (Archidendron pauciflorum) is a plant commonly used by local Indonesian communities to treat diabetic wounds. The efficiency of herbal medicine still has a deficiency of its ability to reach the target organs, therefore nanotechnology is applied in the hope that all drug concentrations can reach the target organs successfully. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PLGA nanoparticle ointment-ethanol extract jengkol fruit peel (EEJFP) to accelerate the wound healing process in the skin of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The research method used was experimental with a completely randomized design using six treatments and four replications. Diabe-tes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 180 mg/ kg BW. Mice with a blood glucose level of ≥150 mg/dL were used for diabetic mice models. The incision wound created at the dorsolateral region of shaven skin at ±1 cm2 using sterile scissors. The treatments given were vaseline for Control Negative (CN) and Control Positive (CP), Betadine ointment (PB), 10% EEJFP ointment (P1), 5% PLGA nanoparticle ointment-EEJFP (P2), and 2.5% PLGA nanoparticle ointment-EEJFP (P3). The results showed that the administration of PLGA nanoparticles ointment-EEJFP with a concentration of 5% PLGA nanoparticle ointment-EEJFP (P2) resulted in the shortest wound length on day 3, 7 and 14; narrower granulation tissue; a larger number of blood capillaries; and denser collagen fibers (α <0.05) compared to CP and PB treatments. The administration of PLGA nanoparticle ointment-EEJFP with a concentration of 5% was the most effective concentration in accelerating wound healing in the skin of diabetic mice.Â

    Growth of Sweet Corn (Zea mays saccharata (Sturt.) Bailey) and Weed Density With Different of Fertilizer’S Doses

     This study aimed to determine the response of the growth of sweet corn plants and weed density to the treatment of bio-fertilizer based on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and cow manure fertilizer. The study was conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in a factorial pattern. The first factor was arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) consisting of four doses, namely without AMF (A0), AMF 5 g/planting hole (A1), AMF 10 g/planting hole (A2), AMF 15 g/ planting hole (A3). The second factor was cow manure fertilizer con-sisting of three doses, namely without cow manure fertilizer (B0), cow manure fertilizer 3 kg/plot (B1), cow manure fertilizer 6 kg/plot (B2). The treatment applied consisted of 12 combinations of treatments with 3 replications, so there were 36 experimental units. The observed variables were plant height, stem diameter, leaf area and weed density. The results showed that the average height of sweet corn was best at 42 DAP in the treatment of cow manure fertilizer 6 kg/plot (B2) as 111.6 cm. The average highest of stems diameter was at 14 DAP in the treatment of cow manure fertilizer 6 kg/plot (B2) as 0.40 cm. The average leaf area of sweet corn was at the age of 28 DAP was highest in the combination treatments cow manure fertilizer 6 kg/ plot (A0B2) and without AMF as 894.5. The weed species with the highest density found was I.cylindrica as 0.5-32.4%, C. kyllingia as 1.3-41.8%, C. rotundus as 1.3-30.3% and F.miliaceae as 1.2-12.7%.Â
