IMPROVING THE COLLEGE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL OF POTENSI UTAMA UNIVERSITY THROUGH TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE METHOD

The purpose of this study is to find out how the application of the Total Physical Response method in an effort to improve English language skill. The subjects in this study were the college students of Potensi Utama University in Medan. While the object of this research is the application of the TPR method, to improve students' skill to speak English. Based on the results of the study it can be seen that the percentage of the results of the completeness of the students' scores between the preliminary conditions and the first and the second cycle has increased. In the preliminary conditions the percentage of completeness in student grades is only 24%. In the first cycle, the percentage of completeness of students' scores increased to 40%, while in the second cycle there was a significant increase to 68%. If a comparison is made between students 'speaking abilities during the preliminary conditions and after the application of the TPR method, there is a 53% increase in students' English speaking skill using the TPR method. Thus it can be said that the use of the TPR method can improve students' English skill in the procedure text.

Self-actualization of The Main Character Hujan Novel by Tere Liye A Review of Psychology Abraham Maslow
Full text linkAbstrackThis research aims to self-actualization of depictions of the main characters of the Novel Hujan work of Tere Liye and structure of which is contained in the novel. This research is qualitative research using the method of content analysis. The approach used ini this study is the structural approach and psychology Abraham Maslow. In this study, there are four ways of engineering data collection performed by the researchers, namely: (a) read and understand the contents of the novel’s story in depth. (b) the identification of each of the novel’s structure, namely: tokoh, characters, setting, and theme. (c) conduct a classification with classified the quotations form phrases, clauses, sentences, or paragraphs containing the existence of self-actualization character and basic necessities to achieve self-actualization. (d) hold a study library to get secondary data as supplementary data about self-actulization of the main character. In qualitative researches apply as key research instruments. The results of this study indicate that there are six basic needs based on Maslow’s hierarchy. Six basic needs are contained in the main character of the novel Hujan by Tere Liye. The main character can actualize himself although only a few basic needs that have been fulfilled in the character, meaning that six basic needs are not all owened by characters. Although they only meet some of the needs of the six basic needs, they can actualize themselves.Keywords: self-actualization, the Novel, the main charcter, and the psychology of Abraham Maslo
IMPROVING THE ABILITY OF WRITING A NARRATIVE CHARGE BY USING ANIMATED IMAGES MEDIA STUDENT CLASS V.B SD NEGERI 17 LUBUKLINGGAU
Full text linkThe objective of this research was to explain the improvement of writing captions narrative using animated media images of class V.B SD Negeri 17 Lubuklinggau. The research method used was classroom action research. This research was conducted in two cycles. Techniques of collecting data using test and observation techniques. The research process of each cycle was done through four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study are students of class V.B with a total of 29 students consisting of 18 male students and 11 female students. The results showed that there was an increase in the ability to write a narrative essay of class V.B SD Negeri 17 Lubuklinggau by using animation media images. This is evidenced by students who get the value of ≥ 70 or who have completed in cycle two reached 93.10%. From the results of this study the Indonesian language teachers can use the animated media images in improving the ability to write narrative essay and ability on other basic competencies.

CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE IN RAJA AL-SANEA’S NOVEL BANAT AL-RIYAD (A Content Analysis)

Objective of this study is to gain understanding about types of implicature and violation of cooperative Maxim in Rajaa Al Sane's novel The Girl of Riyadh. The study took place between August, 2016 and March, 2017. The study was a qualitative study with content analysis method, which involved data collection, data processing, data analysis and data display. The focus of this study was analyzing two types of implicatures used in utterances in the novel, namely conventional and non-conventional implicature as well as violations of Grice's Cooperative Principles resulting in implicature, namely Maxim of quantity, Maxim of relevance, Maxim of manner, Maxim of relevance-quality, Maxim of quantity-quality and Maxim of quantity-manner. The findings of this study have theoretical contributions to Arabic learning theories in university, in general and provide examples of foreign language implicatures, in particular.

Full text linkAbstractThis research points to gain the comprehensive of socialism ideology in novel O by Eka Kurniawan investigated by genetical structuralism. A novel is an interesting literary work contains kinds of topics inside, but there is stil a line or certain contents on it. A social genre novel brings social stories in this research. This research inspects how socialism ideology described in this novel by genetics structuralism. The focus goaled to find out how does socialism ideology describe the existence of humanism fact in novel O based on genetics structuralism. Analytic method used in this research, it observes attentively technic and notes after the writer read and studied the novel many times to gain a better comprehensive. Research result shows that there is socialism ideology based on humanity fact described in novel O written by Eka Kurniawan has seen on a police character that is social classes cover ; lower social class taken by a monkey, a description of lower society beside police as a middle class.Keywords: Socialism Ideology, Novel O, Genetics Structuralis

Full text linkAbstractThis study aims to determine whether or not there is any impact of the activity of red cross youth organization to the effective speaking ability of the students of class XI SMA Negeri 2 Panca Rijang Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This research uses two variables, namely the activity of the red cross youth organization as independent variabel (experimental group) and the ability to speak effective as a dependent variabel (control group). The population in this study is all students of class XI SMA Negeri 2 Panca Rijang Sidenreng Rappang Regency as many as 193 students, while the sample is 15% of the total population, which is 30 students. Data collection technique in this studi, ie documentation techniques then the results obtained from these techniques are further analyzed and processed through descriptive statistical techniques in the form of mean.The results showed that the value Mx = 68,3 and My = 63 so it can be seen that the value of Mx greater than My, ie 68,3 >63. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is impact of activity of organization of red cross yout organization to ability of effective speaking of student of class XI Negeri 2 Panca Rijang Sidenreng Rappang Regency.Keywords: Activity, Youth Red Cross organization, Speak effectivel
EXISTENCE OF MORAL CHARACTER IN THE PLAY JENAR BABAD TANAH PENGGING (Used Review of Content Analysis)
Full text linkAbstractThis study aims to reveal the types of moral existence of the main character Syekh Siti Jenar, the disclosure and description of the moral of Sheikh Siti Jenar, and the moral of Sheikh Siti Jenar with the reality of life in the Laker Babad Tanah Pengging by Saini K.M. The study was conducted form October 2016 to August 2017. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with content analysis technique starting focus of research, data collection, verification of data validity, analyze, interpret, find, verify, and conclude. The results show that this play contains a positive moral existence that can be used as a reference to study literature. The content of the play is closely related to the life of the community so the result of the research is suggested that the play "Syekh Siti Jenar in Babad Tanah Pengging," by Saini K.M. can serve as a medium for teaching individual, social, and moral religious which concerned about the moral issues of the students that occur in the process of literary learning.Keywords: The play, Main Figures, and existence of Mora
WOMEN'sS EXISTENCE IN SIBEL ERASLAN'S HAJAR (A Feminism Study)
Full text linkAbstractThis study was aimed to study and explain women's existence and Sibel Eraslan's Hajar novel structure based on feminism literature. This is a qualitative research using content analysis method. The findings in this study include; (1) the building element structure contained in Hajar covering theme, characterization, plot, and background; (2) women's images in Hajar which includes both physical and non-physical images; (3) women's roles in Hajar which correspondents domestic and public roles. The existence theory used to study Hajar was Kiekegaard's existence theory which defines images and roles. The theory was used to analyze the efforts undertaken by women against oppression. The results of this study are expected to be useful in the process of learning language and literature, especially in feminism studies, as to improve learners and readers ability in understanding literary works.Keywords: women, existence, feminism, novel
STRUCTURES IN THE NOVEL OF BIDADARI-BIDADARI SURGA BY KARYA TERE LIYE (Structuralism Analysis)

This study aims to describe the character and characterization, plot, background, style of language, the point of view, theme and the mandate of Tere Liye's novel of Bidadari-Bidadari Surga. The method in this study is the content analysis of qualitative approach. Based on data analysis, the following results are summarized as follows: 1) The main character in Tere Liye's Novel of Bidadari-Bidadari Surga is Laisa, additional characters are Mamak, Babak, Dalimunte, Ikanuri, Wibisana, Yashinta. 2) The mixed flow, covering the situation Mother send Message to his children about the condition of the sickly Laisa, her mother sent to her children who message to he who received the first Message that Dalimunte, Ikanuri, Wibisana, and Yashintaberanjak adult, childhood continue to haunt them, climax that is Kak Laisa not yet married must pass by Dalimunte and his siblings. Dalimunte finally married after being forced by Kak Laisa. 3) The background consists of three sections, a backdrop of thirty-one backgrounds, a twenty-seven background setting, and a social setting that is a disgrace in the Lahambay Valley if an unmarried girl over the age of twenty. 4) The Language Style is the style of comparison, contradiction, and affirmation. 5) The third person's perspective "he" is omniscient and the point of view of "I" extra figure 6) The theme is the sincere sacrifice of a brother for the future of his younger brothers. 7) The mandate of this life must be lived with sincerity and full of gratitude for all that God has given.

FOSTERING COLLEGE STUDENT'S CRITICAL READING SKILL THROUGH PADLET APPLICATION
Full text linkAbstractCritical reading is an essential skill for college students success in academic and social engagement. Many students have troubles in reading the required books or references in some courses. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of padlet application as an instructional media in fostering college students critical reading skill in higher education. Moreover, the strengths and the weaknesses of the padlet application in teaching critical reading were explored. This study applied action research was conducted in two cycles and involved twenty five college students. It was carried out at a private university in West Java. Moreover, three data collection techniques were applied in this study including reading tests, classroom observations, and questionnaire. The finding shows that by implementing padlet application in fostering college students critical reading skill covering questioning, discussing, interpreting, summarizing and synthesizing, in the first cycle, most college students critical reading skill achieved much improvement obviously. Sixty percents of all students reached the learning outcomes in critical reaading. Furthermore, in the second one, after carrying out a deep analysis and remedial teaching, eighty percents of them reached the learning outcome in critical reaading. It means that almost all college students critical reading skill increased significantly. Thus, the implementation of padlet application in fostering students critical reading skill is effective with the result showing significant difference, compared with that of the first cycle.Keywords: action research, critical reading, padlet application
