Narrative forms of action and the dangers of ‘derivations’ in narratology
Get PDFThis article attempts to define the form that action takes when it is the focus of narrative plot, in a manner that avoids certain detours in the interpretation of narrative phenomenon and its anthropological function. Two such detours are evoked at the outset. First, structuralist narratology has had a tendency to analyze the “actional” structures of the narrative fabula autonomously. This has led narratalogists to lose sight of the function that actions have in conversational, or oral narrative, and to generalize a theory of action from this partial view. Second, cognitive theorists, despite having decompartimentalized narrative structures, have generally based their work on a schematic model of intentional action that is too general and too simplistic to properly determine the function that narrated actions fulfill. The author highlights the ways that certain forms of narrated action produce suspense or curiosity when used in conversational narrative. Drawing attention to the fundamental role of polemical actions in the dynamics of narration allows oppose two complementary conceptions of action: whereas “narrative” approaches highlight the uniqueness, the under-determinedness, or the surprising character of the narrated event, other forms of analysis seek to draw attention to the rules behind the apparent novelty of the event

Get PDFL\u27intento di questo saggio è quello di fornire alcuni spunti interpretativi per il romanzo Il cardillo addolorato (1993) di Anna Maria Ortese, sulla base del modello psicanalitico lacaniano e di un confronto con il mito di Antigone. Il primo capitolo consiste in una breve introduzione alla complessità esegetica dell\u27opera e al tema dell\u27enigma in senso fattuale e semantico. Successivamente si discute la posizione della protagonista Elmina quale oggetto del desiderio dei tre signori di Liegi e portavoce del discorso isterico. Infine, a partire da possibili fonti testuali, si avanza l\u27ipotesi di una presenza sotterranea del mito di Antigone, per cui Elmina sarebbe una figura del desiderio utopico: la sua devozione per Hieronymus Käppchen assume le sembianze di un\u27intransigenza etica che evoca in tono minore ma non meno doloroso il dramma di Antigone. This paper aims at providing some suggestions for the interpretation of Anna Maria Ortese’s novel The Lament of the Linnet, in the light of Lacanian psychoanalysis and of a comparison with the myth of Antigone. The first chapter consists of a brief introduction to the hermeneutical complexity of the work and to the theme of the enigma in a factual and semantic sense. Subsequently, the role of the main character Elmina as object of desire of the three gentlemen from Liegi and as representative of the discourse of the hysteric will be discussed. Lastly, on the basis of probable textual sources, the hypothesis of a hidden presence of Antigone’s myth is put forward. Thus, Elmina would be a figure of utopian desire: her devotion to Hieronymus Käppchen takes the shape of a moral intransigence that evokes in lower, although not less painful, key Antigone’s drama
Enhancing Physician Empathy: Optimizing Learner Potential for Narrative Transportation
Get PDFThis article argues for the pedagogical usefulness of engaging with literary texts in the formal training of physicians and healthcare workers. It suggests that particular “skills” in reading and engaging with narrative are as readily teachable to healthcare students as are skills in reading x-rays or in diagnosing symptoms. It focuses on three phenomena associated with literary (and other forms) of narrative – namely, the recognition of characters, vicarious experience, and the experience of fellow feeling – and relates them to three categories in cognitive psychology: Theory of Mind, Narrative Transportation, and Empathy. It presents a survey of empirical studies in cognitive psychology that demonstrates the effectiveness of literary narrative in producing these psychological states, and ends by demonstrating how the teaching of a literary narrative – Bastard Out of Carolina – has enhanced these states in students planning on a career in medicine. Such enhancement, the article suggests, are produced by literary features such as imagery, defamiliarization, and patterned organization on the levels of phonology, semantics, and story structure

Get PDF Starting from the question of the relationship between emotions and literature, this article will offer some suggestions to compare the methods and some tools for the interpretation of literary works drawn from psychoanalysis and neurocognitive sciences. To clarify the differences and to justify the irreducibility of these two prospects, we chose to propose a reading of Sophocles\u27 Ajax. The textual analysis will be \u27counterpointed\u27 by some reflections elaborated in Nietzschean\u27s conflictual aesthetics, in particular in his Götzen-Dämmerung.Prendendo le mosse dalla questione del rapporto tra emozioni e letteratura, in questo articolo offriamo alcuni spunti per confrontare i metodi e alcuni strumenti per l\u27interpretazione delle opere letterarie elaborati dalla psicoanalisi e dalle scienze neurocognitive. Get PDFLe teorie psicoanalitiche della letteratura, dopo una fase di alterne fortune, sono oggi praticate da una cerchia di adepti sempre più ristretta. Le nuove koinè critico-teoriche tendono infatti a relegare la dottrina freudiana all’interno di un sapere letterario (e non interpretativo) o a sostituire ad essa strumenti ritenuti più efficaci nella descrizione della sfera del mentale in letteratura (neuroestetica e neuronarratologia). La proposta storiografica che qui si avanza non vuole prendere parte in questo dibattito pro o contro la psicocritica, ma vuole leggere le proposte di teoria psicoanalitica della letteratura alla luce di una riflessione sul concetto di ibridazione, concetto sul quale queste teorie hanno costruito il loro confronto con i paradigmi teorici di volta in volta egemoni
