Empathic Communications and Narrative Competence in Contemporary Medical Education
Get PDFLindsay Holmgren’s “Empathic Communications and Narrative Competence in Contemporary Medical Education” reviews the teaching of narrative competency in medical education, arguing that these practices must engage postclassical approaches to narrative studies while attending to the concept of empathy as it is deployed in various disciplines, including narratology, cognitive science, and psychology. With an emphasis on the formation of professional identity in medical practice, Holmgren explores the relationship between professional identity in a multi-ethnic, gender-neutral, demographically and culturally diverse medical education context, and the complex arena of narrative empathy. Hinging her argument on the reciprocal nature of identity that emerges at the intersections of various versions of the self and others, Holmgren’s article aligns the empathy developed by reading fiction with that which develops in the clinical encounter. Finally, the article understands these various, evolving subject positions rhetorically, arguing that the comportments of medical educators in the humanities should be such that their students will want to emulate them
Suspense is the Key. Narratology, Cognitive Neurosciences and Computer Technology
Get PDFThe Narratology of new generation shows renewed heuristic scenarios, providing an intense dialogue among Humanities, Cognitive Neuroscience and Computer Technology. The suspense case is emblematic: its spread and the pleasure exercised by this rhetorical strategy on the human mind can be precisely explained by identifying the mechanisms of reward provided by neurological and Imaging studies. At the same time, patterns of automatic generation of narrative highlight the profound implications of a heated debate between Narratology and Computer Technology, in order to understand the processes of reception and inference during the narrative immersion in storyworlds. At the end of overview on of a cross-disciplinary approach of suspense analysis, the authors repost a case study considered of interest, provided by the North Caroline State University researchers group, called Liquid Narrative Group.

Get PDFIl saggio esamina la figura della Lucia di Manzoni alla luce del ‘tipo’ letterario della ‘fanciulla perseguitata’, al crocevia fra agiografia, letteratura libertina, romanzo sentimentale, narrativa gotica e letteratura romantica. In particolare si sofferma, anche attraverso un’analisi comparata dei frontespizi de I promessi sposi e dell’edizione del 1791 di Justine, sulle affinità e le divergenze fra la Lucia di Manzoni e l’eroina di Sade, sostenendone la parentela intertestuale e la specularità, nell’essere entrambe risposte (solo apparentemente antitetiche) al problema metafisico del male. In questo senso si sottolinea l’influenza, su Manzoni e Sade, del modello mariano, nei decenni in cui si assiste, per reazione al laicismo illuminista e rivoluzionario, a un rinnovato culto per la Vergine, che culminerà con il dogma dell’Immacolata Concezione (1854) e le apparizioni di Lourdes (1858). The essay examines the figure of Manzoni’s Lucia in the light of the literary ‘type’ of the ‘persecuted maiden’, at the intersection between hagiography, libertine literature, sentimental novel, Gothic narrative, and Romantic literature. In particular, through a comparative analysis of the frontispieces of I promessi sposi and of the 1791 edition of Justine, it focuses on the similarities and differences between Manzoni’s Lucia and Sade’s eponymous heroine, arguing for an intertextual relationship between the two and suggesting their reciprocal specularity, in being both answers (only apparently antithetical) to the metaphysical problem of evil. From this angle, the essay analyzes the influence, on both Manzoni and Sade, of the figure of Mary, in the years witnessing – as a reaction against the secularization promoted by the Enlightenment and the French revolution – to a renewed worship for the Holy Virgin, later culminating in the promulgation of the Immaculate Conception dogma (1854) and the apparitions at Lourdes (1858)

Narrative and Cultural History in the Hippocratic Treatise On Ancient Medicine
Get PDFThis paper focuses on the ‘history of medicine’ outlined by the author of the Hippocratic treatise On Ancient Medicine, in order to reflect on the relationship between medicine and narrative in Classical Greece. At the outset of the work, the author provides an account of the beginnings of his discipline, conceiving of medicine’s history as a continuum of research and findings that unravel the nature of the human body and the cause of diseases. As this paper shows, the physician-narrator assigns to his craft a crucial role in fostering the birth and progress of human civilization. The rhetorical goals of the historical account are, as I argue, attained through a subtle narrative strategy. In fact, the narrator locates the origins of medicine within a teleological framework, marked by strong emphasis on the heuristic method that characterizes the past, the present, and the future of medical knowledge at once

Get PDFIl testo di Marcelle Sauvageot, sebbene presenti un indiscutibile valore letterario, ha faticato ad imporsi come grande classico della letteratura e ancora oggi manca di un’analisi che sappia metterne in luce la straordinarietà. Nelle rare analisi letterarie in nostro possesso, Commentaire sembra essere stato letto troppo frettolosamente, portando ad emersione solamente la sua caratteristica più evidente, ovvero quella che tende a stabilire un rapporto diretto tra questo genere di scrittura e il “genere” sessuale dell’autrice/scrittrice. Per questo è stato semplicisticamente annoverato tra gli esempi di «scrittura femminile».Al contrario, questo articolo propone una lettura diversa che vede nelle pagine di Sauvageot non solo l’urlo disperato di una donna che denuncia la debolezza e la meschinità del mondo maschile, ma, ad un livello più profondo di analisi, una raffinata e più generale speculazione attorno al sentimento amoroso, una riflessione che, procedendo oltre il punto di vista del femminismo, indaga le conseguenze a livello identitario provocate dall’abbandono e dal tradimento dell’Altro a cui il soggetto aveva pensato di legare indissolubilmente la propria esistenza
Evaluating Representations of Mental Health in Young Adult Fiction: The Case of Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Get PDFThis article examines representations of mental health in young adult (YA) litearature, taking up Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999) as its case study. Paying attention to the affordances of the genre of “teen sick-lit,” I connect such YA literature to the broader field of narrative medicine and consider what can be gained from this relationship. After a careful analysis of Chbosky’s novel, I conclude with a set of criteria that serve as markers of YA texts that productively convey mental health experiences. Although my focus here is on mental illness representations, my criteria and textual analysis can be extended to narratives that focus on other illness and diseases, as well
