Going Under and Coming Round: Anesthesia, Narrative, and Trauma
General anesthesia is of course valued for sparing patients the physical pain and psychological trauma of being sensate and conscious during surgery, but it also poses a specific challenge to the narrative continuity often seen as a defining aspect of human identity and of mental health. The patient is (arguably) absented from the scene in which his or her body is (arguably) traumatized, and then returns to awareness to find a body that has been changed. This rupture in continuity presents a challenge to coherent first-person narration. Examining some of the strategies used by writers to represent the gap opened up by anesthesia, I suggest that such accounts illuminate our understanding of the connections between narrative rupture, trauma, and an ethical responsibility to recognize the possibility of sentience, and hence the capacity for suffering, in anaesthetized patients
Narrative Time and the Thyroid: Hormone Secretions and Storytelling in Italo Svevo\u27s "Doctor Menghi\u27s Drug"
In the wake of fin-de-siècle discoveries in the field of endocrinology, bodily glands and the hormones they produced featured prominently in the literary works, visual arts, and popular culture of early twentieth-century Europe. Experimental surgery promised rejuvenation and intellectual vitality through gland transplantation and grafting, while phenomena of all sorts began to be associated to hormone production in causal links—from bodily rhythms to behavioral patterns, from the pace of history to the trajectory of nations. Italo Svevo was fascinated by Basedow and Graves’s discoveries on the thyroid, a gland that was supposed to determine the speed and promptness of one’s body according to the amount of hormones it produced—hypothyroidism, or scarcity of hormones, would entail lethargic behavior and slow movements, while hyperthyroidism, or the abundant production of hormones, would lead to excessive activity and consumption. Through the analysis of an early short story by Svevo, “Doctor Menghi’s Drug” (ca. 1904), this paper addresses how the activity of the thyroid affects not only bodily rhythms, but also narrative time—intended as both the time of the story (diegetic time) and the pace of storytelling—and it explores how metabolic processes act as constraints for literary creativity by complicating narrative time and raising questions of narrative agency

Nietzsche and Morphology
Goethe’s thought as a scientist and Morphology have had a pivotal influence on Nietzsche’s thinking. Indeed they are necessary chapters to go through in order to understand how some of the key points of his thought have developed. Understanding how these factors are tangled to Nietzsche\u27s speculation allows to rebuild the origin of suggestions from which the young Nietzsche moved from to examine the new impulses brought by biology. Moreover, it is remarkable to notice that the concept of Life as Will to Power sprout up right from these ideas. In particular, Nietzsche\u27s Will to Power accomplished all the elements present in Goethe\u27s considerations on living: Form, Metamorphosis, Becoming, living entity, plural-Individual
The first part of the essay offers a brief preliminary definition of the poetic diary as a paradigmatic genre of modern poetry. The long and rich history of lyric genre in the last century can be seen as originating from a process that has brought it closer to the form of the diary. This process implies an overall re-actualization of the rhetorical and representational devices of lyrical book (intercalated enunciation and subjective intermittence), both in textual as in macrotextual dimensions. In the second part the essay takes in analysis Camillo Sbarbaro’s Pianissimo as a paradigmatic example of inventive employ of the diary model. Rather than delivering the immediate lyrical expression of a subjective experience, Sbarbaro dramatizes a condition of nervous wavering and sclerotic fluctuation between an uncomposed and irreducible myriad of momentary self emergences, unrelated and contradictory
Roland Barthes, le zone grige e l\u27utopia - Roland Barthes, grey areas and utopia
The essay is based on a specific group of books (Writing Degree Zero, Mythologies, Criticism and Truth, Inaugural Lection, Collège de France, The Rustle of Language, Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes) and draws inspiration from the strong interest that Barthes dedicates to some particular phenomena, here defined as grey areas, which are equal to a sort of ʽshort-cutʼ in verbal expression and in the articulation of thoughts; then relates it to his reflection on literature and utopia. At first, the essay emphasizes the connection between Barthes’ semiotics and critique of ideology, in order to identify two important topics: the relation between power and language and writing’s resolute ambiguity. Subsequently, these themes are related to Barthes’ reflection on the connection between literature and utopia, identifying some of its forms and figures, and on the problem of literature and referentiality.
Illness has always been easy to find in literature and indeed it has become a real topos. However, it is only in the XXth century that the illness experience has become an essential part of autobiography. Writing his own life or rewriting it after facing the disease is assumed to be nowadays a – not only - literary practice which has reached a great popularity; this is also proved by the neologism «pathography», that was coined to identify this kind of texts. Hence, we may be talking about a new genre, whose origins, influences and peculiar features will be tracked down in this paper. Finally, a comparison between the works of Annie Ernaux, Christa Wolf and Hervé Guibert will allow us to discern the original perspectives from those largely shared in the narration and conceptualization of the illness experience
