Local Fictionality within Global Nonfiction: Roz Chast\u27s Can\u27t We Talk about Something More Pleasant?
Get PDFThis essay deploys a rhetorical approach to fictionality (defined as intentionally signaled communication in narrative) in order to analyze Roz Chast’s various uses of local fictionality within her graphic memoir about her parents’ end-of-life experiences. In so doing, it extends the contribution Chast’s memoir makes to the understanding of the many facets of end-of-life experiences for patients and their families by unpacking significant details of her exploration of her own experiences. The essay also contributes to conversations about the fiction/nonfiction distinction by (a) highlighting the presence of the narrative audience in fiction and its absence in local uses of fictionality in global nonfiction and (b) showing that the presence of local fictionality can enhance an author’s communication about actual events. Finally, the essay offers a preliminary and partial taxonomy of fictionality within the genre of graphic narrative

No full textSi traduce qui “The Return of Omniscience in Contemporary Fiction”, saggio di Paul Dawson pubblicato nel 2009 sul secondo numero – volume diciassettesimo – di Narrative. Il saggio tratta del ritorno del narratore onnisciente nella narrativa in lingua inglese degli ultimi vent’anni. L’ipotesi messa in gioco da Dawson è che questo ritorno si debba anzitutto a ragioni di tipo sociale, in particolare alla volontà da parte di molti scrittori di rivendicare il loro ruolo di intellettuali pubblici. I narratori onniscienti che compaiono oggi in molti romanzi e racconti sarebbero delle specie di controfigure dei rispettivi autori reali, e dall’interno dei singoli testi contribuirebbero ad amplificarne voce e opinioni. Dopo una prima parte in cui è ripercorso per sommi capi il dibattito intorno all’onniscienza avvenuto verso la metà dei primi anni Duemila, il saggio si sofferma sullo specifico dell’onniscienza contemporanea, per poi passare a descrivere le principali tipologie di narratore onnisciente riscontrabili nei romanzi e racconti pubblicati negli ultimi anni.La traduzione è preceduta da una breve introduzione in cui sono presentate le principali questioni affrontate nel saggio, e insieme ne vengono messi in luce gli aspetti suscettibili di propiziare future indagini.This is the Italian translation of the article “The Return of Omniscience in Contemporary Fiction” by Paul Dawson (Narrative, 2, 17, 2009), about the return of the omniscient narrator in British and American literary fiction of the last twenty years. Dawson’s hypothesis is that this return is first of all due to social reasons, in particular to the will of many writers to reclaim their role as public intellectuals. The omniscient narrators who appear today in many novels and short stories could be viewed as a sort of stuns of their respective real authors, whose and opinions they would textually amplify. After a first part briefly dedicated to the most recent debates about omniscience, the essay focuses on the specificity of contemporary omniscience, finally analysing the main typologies of omniscient narrator in novels and short stories published along the last years.This translation is preceded by a brief introduction presenting the main issues of the essay and bringing to light its most promising aspects for the future investigations.
Arctic narrative semantics in Soviet History, Fiction and Art of the 1930s
Get PDFThe paper traces the very different contours of Soviet discourses of Arctic in the Stalinists 1930s with their narrative transformation of Arctic space into integral part of national Soviet space. The goal is to see how the Arctic narrative developed and evolved throughout the last 30/40 years of the Soviet era. The research is based on analysis of 3000 literary texts, articles, memoirs and letters, published and archived. The results confirm the presence of ‘Arctic discourse’ in the Soviet society and is supported by various sources. The Arctic issue became permanent in cultural and political practices of the time in the late 1920s and had a series of climaxes in the 1930s–1940s. Its popularity peaked in the mid-1950s and then dropped dramatically. The cultural and literary background of such change is explored through the narrative definitions

Get PDFIl presente contributo si propone di analizzare la rappresentazione del tema psichiatrico all’interno dell’opera di Ottiero Ottieri, focalizzandosi in particolare su tre opere pubblicate negli anni Settanta: Il pensiero perverso (1971), Il campo di concentrazione (1972) e La corda corta (1978). Finalità di questa analisi sarà quella di portare alla luce l’evidente frattura tra la concezione ottieriana della psichiatria e la visione politico-ideologica dominante che, nello stesso periodo, animava il dibattito pubblico sulla scienza psichiatrica acceso dalla rivoluzione basagliana. Allo stesso tempo, l’esame del tema psichiatrico nell’opera di Ottieri – in particolare, l’approccio medico-scientifico all’argomento in questione – verrà identificato come elemento cruciale per spiegare la posizione di outsider che lo scrittore ha occupato all’interno della scena letteraria e culturale italiana.The paper hereby presented examines the representation of the theme of psychiatry in Ottiero Ottieri’s oeuvre, focusing in particular on three works published along the Seventies: Il pensiero perverso (1971), Il campo di concentrazione (1972) and La corda corta (1978). First, I will consider to which extent Ottieri’s approach to psychiatry in literature takes a radical distance from the anti-psychiatric perspective, challenging an idea of psychical illness as social deviance and of cure as repressive practice. At the same time, I will bring to light the weight that Ottieri’s medical and scientific approach to the field of psychiatry had on making the writer play the role of an outsider within the Italian literary and cultural arena.

Il discorso prende avvio da una discussione preliminare sul significato del tema dell’infanzia e dell’adolescenza nell’opera dell’autore. In merito agli Anni impossibili, poi, verrà sottolineato in modo particolare il motivo del confronto tra mondo dell’infanzia e mondo adulto in merito a due opposte visioni della vita. Riguardo al personaggio protagonista, infine, si rileveranno le forme di una strategia rappresentativa funzionale a un ritratto del puer caratterizzato da una profonda ambivalenza.The essay proposes a critical profile focused on the figure of the adolescent character who is the protagonist of Romano Bilenchi’s novel Gli anni impossibili. The speech begins with a preliminary discussion about the meaning of the theme of childhood and adolescence in the author’s works. Concerning Gli anni impossibili, then, it will be particularly highlighted the motif of a contrast between the child’s world and the adult’s world, in regards to different visions about life. As for the boy protagonist, finally, the essay will notice the forms of a representative strategy that is functional to convey a deeply ambivalent portrait of the puer
