    «Lei è ebreo?». Mondi a confronto nelle Lettere a Milena di Kafka

    Get PDF
The essay aims at analyzing, by examining the special bond between Franz Kafka and Milena Jesenská through the lens of their letters, Prague\u27s cultural life in the aftermath of the fall of the Habsburg Empire; an historical event marked by an increasingly threatening and aggressive antisemitism, which made the relationship between the Jewish community and other social units, such as the Czech population, more problematic. The relationship between the Jewish writer and his Czech translator, close friend and confidante, unfolds against this background. A rich and complicated relationship between different albeit communicating worlds

Diegetic Biographism: Authorial Intrusions and Interdiscursive Anchorages Producing a Rhetoric of Authenticity in Three Books by Annie Ernaux

    No full text
After publishing three relatively unnoticed novels, French writer Annie Ernaux stopped labeling her books as novels and adopted a documentary and autobiographical rhetoric. After this autobiographical turn, Ernaux won prestigious prizes and reached a wider audience. This article is an attempt to map out the narrative devices that instigated the impression of urgency, authenticity, and biographical referentiality that the critics praised. Positioning Ernaux’s autobiographical project in relation to the concept of performative biographism, the neologism «diegetic biographism» is proposed for her systematic metanarrative commentary and referential play. Increased reader engagement is thus regarded as a function of Ernaux’s anchoring her narration in an ostensibly biographical reference world

One of Leopardi’s Operette morali, Proposta di premi fatta dall’Accademia dei Sillografi, adopts the gergon of a competition notice to propose three prizes to the inventors of three perfect human machines: friendship, magnanimity, conjugal fidelity are the aims of scientific inventions. The serious tone really conceals the controversy against anthropocentrism and above all against the optimism of its time

The Narratological Style and the Reader of Evelyn Waugh’s Early Satires

The article deals with the role of the implied reader in Evelyn Waugh’s novels. An attempt will be made to define who the implied reader is and what is his position and role in fictional realm. By analysing narrative strategies and techniques within a selection of Waugh’s works, I attempt to discuss the changing relationship between author/narrator and the implied reader. I try to point that within Evelyn Waugh’s writing one can observe a simultaneous evolution of the narrator voice and the role ascribed to the implied reader. What is more, I discuss the limits of interpretation. I try to present and analyse how both the author/narrator and the text can impose limitations on the implied reader allowing him to move freely, however, within a set frame. Intertextuality is one of the focal points of the article, as I try to propose that the use of specific intertextual references in several different novels enhances the reader’s understanding of  Waugh’s fictional world. An attempt is made to prove that through analysis of different levels of understanding intertextual relation the reader takes on himself a role of creator. Furthermore, I draw attention to the places of indeterminacy. In this discussion I include both structures of indeterminacy proposed by Roman Ingarden i.e. blanks and negations, as both are needed not only to establish the interaction that takes place between text and the implied reader, but also to try to regulate such relation. An attempt will be made to explain how important filling the gaps within the text is and how completing the blanks affects the reader and the process of reading as such

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The present study aims at highlighting the practices of narrative socialization that emerge within everyday conversations between parents and children. The analysis of argumentative processes during dinnertime dialogs among Italian family members shows the role of the justification as linguistic and social modality in the process of children’s discursive socialization. The argumentative capacities of parents and children are highlighted through the development of discursive strategies that are created in the here-and-now of dinnertime verbal interactions. These are narratives located at the interconnection between the individual and collective socialization and occasions that allow parents and children “doing family.

The Discourse of a Historian and Administrator in Yevgeny Feoktistov’s Notes from What Has Been Heard and Seen

There is no unambiguous perspective on Russia’a cultural and political processes of the second half of the 19th century. Their patterns are largely approached through the lens of the key figures that had a determining influence at a relevant period. Yevgeny Feoktistov was a writer, a journalist, a staff member of the magazines Sovremennik and Otechestvennye Zapiski, the editor of Russkaya Rech and Journal of the Ministry of National Enlightenment (1871–1883), later a censor, the privy councillor (since January 1, 1883), the head of the Central Administration for Printing Press for almost 13 years (1883–1896) (Russia’s censor-in-chief), a senator (from May 23, 1896 until his death), and part of Russia’s administrative elite. He came an impressive way of personal growth that brought him from the ranks of active liberals and Otechestvennye Zapiski journalists to the position of Russia’s censor-in-chief, who signed the order to close that same magazine twenty years later. His biography is partly captured in Ivan Goncharov’s novel The Same Old Story. This article investigates the modifications of linguistic peculiarities in Feoktistov’s essays and statements and draws his linguistic portrait, which doesn’t only explain the patterns of his behavior and everyday style but also sheds light on the shady sides of the events that Russia witnessed in the 1860s–1890s and shapes new optics of the elite circles Feoktistov was part of

    Oleg I. Fedotov.

This is the Italian translation of the chapter "Iosif Brodskij" of the book Sonet by Oleg Ivanovič Fedotov

Strategie paratestuali nella lirica di Andrea Zanzotto

    Get PDF
A special perspective on the lyrics of Andrea Zanzotto is the constant reasoning on the constitutive aspects of poetry: an essential meditation to Zanzotto’s writing itself. Obviously, several different fundamental elements cannot but interact with this topic, such as the idea of landscape or of the lyrical I; influences of postmodernity on poetry; state of language and dialect, amongst others. They persist in any case on the background, though the central position is occupied by meta-reflection, which goes through and often matches many of the prevailing elements of this unique versification. Zanzotto expresses those concerns even by means of strategies with which he builds his collections; firstly, the paratext of his books, especially titles and notes; secondly, the distinctive feature of the twentieth - century canzoniere and the criteria designed to underline the strategies founding the collected works. There is really no lack of chance for research. Now, the hunt is on for the scented panther
