    Get PDF
Cevdet bey and his sons by Orhan Pamuk represents the first introduction into the Turkish literary field of the “family saga novel” genre. This article focuses on the way Orhan Pamuk, through this first family novel, adapts the Mannian novel to the Turkish context. It also tries to figure out the limits and the specificities of the adaptation-acculturation of a canonical model of the European novel at the Turkish periphery

Business Literature. Letteratura Aziendale: a Semiotic Interpretation of the Italian Literature on the Theme of Work spanning 20 years (1995-2015)

This paper proposes a semiotic model for research in the field of Italian literature on the theme of work for the years 1995-2015. Focusing on Greimas’ theory of semiotic squares and on the actantial model, I focused on three basic relationships within the labour market: the contrast between stories in the context of the factory and the office, between local and global settings, and between the inclusion and exclusion of the worker-figure. I obtained a general structure of the story comprising a sequence of six events: admission, convocation, trauma (or loosening of work relationships), suspension, rescue (true or false), and inertia

I lettori di Platone. L’influenza di Iser sugli studi platonici e alcune possibili nuove prospettive

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Revolution and Exploration: the English Translations of Rousseau and Humboldt by Helen Maria Williams

    Get PDF
British author Helen Maria Williams (1759-1827) was a well-known figure in the eighteenth century literary circles, whose work was praised by Elizabeth Montagu, Samuel Johnson, Dorothy and William Wordsworth, Mary Wollstonecraft, Hester Piozzi or Alexander von Humboldt.  In her early poems  Edwin and Eltruda (1782), An Ode to the Peace (1783) and Peru (1784), Williams starts to reveal her political tendencies by appealing to strong empathic feelings as a key to social and political transformation. As a result of her interest in politics, she travelled to France in 1790 and published her most acclaimed work Letters from France (1790). However, the rest of her production has received little critical attention by modern scholars, who have overlooked her involvement in translation. Williams’ only extant novel, Julia (1790) is in fact a creative translation of Rousseau’s Julie ou La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761), in which Williams includes poems that evidence her interest in revolutionary politics. Four years later, she translated Bernardin de Saint Pierre’s Paul et Virginie, while she was imprisoned in Paris. While translating novels was regarded as a respectable exercise for women writers, Williams challenges gender assumptions by translating Researches (1814) and the seven volumes of Personal Narrative (1814-1829), which had been produced by one of the most influential eighteenth century scientists, Alexander von Humboldt. This article interrogates how Williams makes use of translation to access areas of knowledge traditionally restricted to men, such as philosophy, politics and science. For this purpose, I will focus on her translations of the work of two leading intellectual figures of the eighteenth century,  Rousseau and Von Humboldt

    Get PDF
The Hero of Consciousness? Astolfo and the viewpoint over the world in the Orlando furiosoThe events narrated within Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando furioso assimilate the humanistic debate on the formation of the individual, his interactions with natural and social environment, his strategies of containment of the disrupting action of passions. The present essay reads in the psychological discourse developed within the Furioso the representation of a process of the self overstepping the historical context and its debate, to intercept some anthropological and biological constant. Particularly, Ariosto’s work stylizes and gives shape to the emergence of consciousness, not as an ethic and moral entity but as a building process of the self moving from an instinctual and pulsional dimension. Indeed, in the complexity of the plot is represented the tension between punctual and discontinuous stage of beeing and a stable and coherent self-perception. The laborious disentanglement of characters from the wood of their recoursive desires relies to the biological conditions originating consciousness, the bodily and sensory origin of the self. Grounding on this analogy, the essay analyzes how in the poem Astolfo becomes both a witness and an instrument of an hypothesis of persistence of consciousness. Changed in myrtle by the sorceress Alcina, Astolfo enters the poem emerging from an experience of moral and biological degradation. Reconqured the human shape, Astolfo faces and defeats different expressions of disproportion, monstruosity, shapelessness, varability and instability. He has to dissolve Atlante’s palace, and to recover Orlando’s wits: releasing knights from their recurring obsessions and giving deployment to their stories, Astolfo, the traditionally thoughtless hero, becomes a function of the generation of consciousness. Which, as revealed by Astolfo’s «aventurose» escapades, shaped by chance and circumstances, doesn’t depend on a strong act of his will, but on a flexible and incidental elaboration of the experience. The anomalous status of the character, his displaced gaze on the world, his path from the depth of matter to the height of thought, witnesses the precarious attempt to raise from the nuclear emergences of life, thus achieving the fulfillment of consciousness

Le forme dell\u27innocenza: un\u27indagine sulle fiabe romanzo di fine Ottocento

    Get PDF
This essay gives a theoretical explanation of the formal ambivalence of three novels which present fairytale characteristics, written among the end of nineteenth century and early twentieth century: Alice’s adventures in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll, Le avventure di Pinocchio. Storia di un burattino by Carlo Collodi (1881) and Peter Pan (1912) by James M. Barrie. The work gives account of the formal process by which the two genres are mixed with each other; eventually, some relevant problems connected to the born of psycoanalysis are considered, in order to suggest a subterranean formal link between classical nineteenth-century literature on supernatural and the modernist Avant-garde sensibility towards it
