    Can ecosystem services supply match local residents' perception: Linking macro-ESs and micro-individual perceptions in the Yellow River Basin

    Residents' satisfaction perceptions of ecosystem services (ESs) are essential for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin (YRB). Existing studies lacks large-scale survey of local residents' satisfaction perception at urban scale within river basins, and has not effectively explored the matching relationship between the ESs supply and the perceptions of local residents. To address this gap, this study develops a database on nine ESs supply and individual perceptions of the YRB, constructs a comprehensive framework to quantify the matching of ESs supply and local residents' satisfaction perceptions, and proposes targeted strategy. The results reveal that: (1) Provisioning services are higher in cities along the river, while regulating services are higher in the south and west, both showing spatial clustering (p < 0.05). Cultural services are unevenly distributed, with higher quality of life and leisure tourism in the east and south. Provisioning and regulating services exhibit a spatial clustering (p < 0.05). (2) Residents' perceptions of provisioning services are the highest [3.86, 4.28], followed by cultural services [3.85, 3.98], and regulating services are lowest [3.53, 3.69]. Only provisioning services show significant spatial correlation (p < 0.05). (3) There are trade-offs and synergies in the ESs supply, but no significant correlation between the supply and perceptions. (4) A significant mismatch between ESs supply and local residents' perceptions in 15-24 cities, with 33.33%-71.79% of cities showing underestimation or overestimation of ESs supply. These findings provide feasible references for formulating and implementing tailored strategies for coordinated human and nature development

    Klimabezogene Risiken sind Risiken, die durch den Klimawandel verschärft werden und Menschenleben, Ökosysteme, unsere Ernährungssicherheit, Infrastruktur und viele weitere Aspekte gefährden. Ein Klimarisikoservice dient der Bereitstellung wissenschaftlicher Informationen über Klimarisiken, um Entscheidungsfindungsprozesse im Kontext der Klimawandelanpassung zu unterstützen und die Entwicklung effektiver Strategien zu ermöglichen. Denn das zeitgerechte Setzen von effektiven Maßnahmen kann potenziell verheerende Folgen und Auswirkungen auf menschliche Systeme sowie Ökosysteme mildern und im günstigsten Fall vorbeugen. Klimarisikoservices richten sich an ein breites Spektrum an Zielgruppen, von öffentlichen Verwaltungen und Behörden über die Land- und Forstwirtschaft bis hin zu Infrastrukturbetreiber:innen und Versicherungsunternehmen. In all diesen Bereichen ist das Potenzial für Klimawandelanpassungsmaßnahmen groß. Doch Verbesserungsbedarf besteht unter anderem darin, Klimaservices prozess- und nachfrageorientierter zu gestalten und dadurch die Unterstützung des Klimarisikomanagements zu verbessern. Um die Lücke zwischen Wissen und Praxis effektiv zu schließen, bedarf es eines transdisziplinären ko-kreativen Prozesses, aus dem sich die tatsächlichen Anforderungen herauskristallisieren. Ko-Kreation bedeutet, gemeinsam mit der Zielgruppe Lösungsansätze zu erarbeiten, die ihren Bedürfnissen gerecht werden. Im Sinne des Servicegedankens ist es wichtig, mögliche Endnutzer:innen bereits bei der Identifizierung der Anforderungen an ein Klimarisikoservice miteinzubeziehen. Dafür eignet sich die Ko- Kreationsmethode, die Schritt für Schritt in diesem Handbuch erklärt wird. Dieses Handbuch entstand aus dem CRiSDA-Projekt im Rahmen des ACRP- Programmes (Austrian Climate Research Program), das vom Klima- und Energiefonds von 01.10.2022 – 28.02.2025 gefördert wird. Das Ziel von CRiSDA ist die Unterstützung eines wissensbasierten, umfassenden Klimarisikomanagements in Österreich durch die Entwicklung eines partizipativen Prozesses zur gemeinsamen Erarbeitung und Erforschung wesentlicher Werkzeuge und Methoden für einen Dürre-Klimarisiko-Service. Wir hoffen, dass die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse einen Beitrag zu den allgemeinen Anforderungen an Klimarisikoservices leisten werden und dass das Handbuch allen Interessierten, die mithilfe der Ko-Kreationsmethode einen Klimarisikoservice in verschiedenen Bereichen entwickeln möchten, dienlich sein wird

    Public Discourse Surrounding the 2025 California Wildfires: A Sentiment and Topic Analysis of High-Engagement YouTube Comments

    This study explores public discourse surrounding the January 2025 California wildfires by analyzing high-engagement YouTube comments. Leveraging sentiment analysis, misinformation detection, and topic modeling, this research identifies dominant emotional tones, thematic patterns, and the prevalence of misinformation in discussions. The results show a predominantly neutral to positive sentiment, with notable emotional intensity in misinformation-related comments, which were rare but impactful. The thematic analysis highlights concerns about governance, environmental issues, and conspiracy theories, including water mismanagement and diversity-related critiques. These findings provide insights for crisis communication, policymaking, and misinformation management during disasters, emphasizing the importance of aligning strategies with public concerns

    Impacts of water conservation, wastewater treatment, and reuse on water quantity and quality stress mitigation in China

    Wastewater treatment plays a crucial role in removing pollutants. Water conservation and reuse of wastewater help to reduce freshwater use and to alleviate water stress. However, the extent to which water conservation, wastewater treatment, and reuse can contribute to water stress mitigation is not clear. This study aims to investigate the impact of water conservation, wastewater treatment, and reuse on both water quantity and quality stress mitigation in China. The investigation is based on a dataset mapping water quantity and pollutant flows across 32 sectors in 31 provinces in 2017 and a dataset of 7411 wastewater treatment plants containing information on wastewater quantity and quality. The findings show that wastewater reuse can reduce provincial water quantity stress by less than 10% and alleviate water stress in 4 out of 25 water-stressed provinces. In contrast, water conservation can contribute to water quantity stress reduction by 31% on average. When water conservation measures and reuse are jointly implemented, quantity stress levels can significantly be alleviated in 19 out of 25 water-stressed provinces, with quantity stress reductions ranging from 25% to 74%. The contribution of wastewater treatment to water quality stress mitigation varies between 6% and 86%, with an average of 29%. Nevertheless, wastewater treatment cannot sufficiently safeguard most regions against water quality stress. This is evident as 25 out of 29 water quality-stressed provinces continue to suffer from quality stress despite implementing wastewater treatment and water conservation practices. Additional measures such as non-point-source pollution control should be implemented alongside wastewater treatment to eliminate provincial quality stress

    Opportunities and Challenges for People-Centred Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems: Perspectives from the Global South

    This perspective critically examines the challenges and opportunities of implementing people-centred Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS) in the Global South. Despite global initiatives, such as the Early Warnings for All initiative, operational realities lag behind. By exploring the needs of the most vulnerable and how core concepts of multi-hazard thinking (e.g., hazard interrelationships and vulnerability dynamics) integrate into different pillars and cross-cutting components of an MHEWS, the perspective highlights a mismatch between current ambitions and realities on the ground. Drawing on extensive experience from Practical Action, we identify opportunities to move towards MHEWS through outlining potential entry points in research, policy, and practice. We emphasise a need for localised, inclusive strategies that genuinely address the needs of the most vulnerable populations and fully encompass the meaning of multi-hazards, including hazard interrelationships, the dynamics of risk components, and the complexity of multi-hazard impacts

    Implications of states’ dependence on carbon dioxide removal for achieving the Paris temperature goal

    Achieving the Paris Agreement's long-term temperature goal of limiting global warming well below 2 degrees C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees C requires rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and CO2 to be withdrawn from the atmosphere and safely stored. However, pathways consistent with the Paris long-term temperature goal span a wide range of emission reductions in coming years: the IPCC indicates 34-60% cuts in GHG emissions between 2019 and 2030. This range is a major source of policy uncertainty. A key determinant of the rate at which emissions must be reduced this decade is the extent to which CO2 removal (CDR) is relied on later to withdraw emissions from the atmosphere. Here, we evaluate the dependence on CDR of 71 states, primarily in their near and long-term climate strategies submitted to the UNFCCC by May 2024, and the associated risks. Our analysis finds substantial ambiguities in how states plan to meet their climate targets. A feature of this ambiguity is that states expect to rely heavily on novel and conventional CDR options to meet their climate goals, and in some cases, rely on removals delivered in other states' territories. Pathways that overshoot 1.5 degrees C and use CDR to remove emissions produced in excess of the 1.5 degrees C-aligned carbon budget will result in more severe climate change impacts and higher risks of crossing planetary tipping points. Moreover, states' disclosed reliance on CDR is highly exposed to risks to its delivery, and non-delivery of planned CDR would raise global temperatures further, worsening impacts of climate change. Our findings provide a basis for enhanced scrutiny of states' targets. The risks associated with heavy reliance on CDR to meet climate goals indicate that states should prioritize pathways that minimize overshoot and the reliance on CDR to reach net-zero CO2 emissions

    Evolving Emotions: Tracing Social Media Narratives in the Wake of the Manchester Arena Bombing

    Individual’s behavior and sentiment in online environments have become increasingly reactive to disaster events. Monitoring and analyzing these behaviors and sentiments in the context of manmade disasters provides valuable insights for crisis management professionals. These analytical processes help develop a comprehensive understanding of evolving situations, support effective response strategies, and contribute to societal stability. Employing appropriate methodologies and tools enables the capture and tracking of semantic shifts in social media communications, offering a means to observe their evolution over time. In this study, we present research conducted on the Manchester Arena Bombing incident in the United Kingdom, which occurred on May 22, 2017, focusing on leveraging data from Twitter (now X). Using Orange, a text-mining analysis software, we explored key discussion topics and their dynamics from messages published immediately after the incident up to a week and a month later. The results demonstrate the evolution of emotional expressions in citizens’ messages during each disaster phase analyzed, including the prevalence of negative and positive sentiments during the recovery phase

    How to achieve adaptive optimization of cultivated land multifunctionality? Insights from coupled supply-utilization-demand interactions

    The adaptive optimization of cultivated land multifunctionality (CLM) is essential for ensuring its sustainable contribution to human well-being. However, the lack of integrated consideration of utilization, supply, and demand hampers the overall performance of CLM. To bridge this research gap, this study develops a theoretical framework for the adaptive optimization of CLM. Using quantitative evaluation, spatial analysis, threshold analysis, and composite zoning methods supported by multi-source data, it explores the spatial differentiation patterns, utilization characteristics, and zoning optimization strategies of CLM in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). The results show that CLM in the YRD is marked by uneven utilization levels, robust supply capacity, and a relatively lagging demand. Influenced by spatial heterogeneity in utilization, supply, and demand, the utilization characteristics—using the supply–demand matching relationship as a threshold—accurately reveal the practical challenges of CLM. Notably, the agricultural production function highlights the unfavorable coexistence of surpass and potential types. Furthermore, the surpass type of the ecological maintenance function accounts for 32.1 % of the YRD. As a result, a multi-level composite zoning approach facilitates developing pathways for upgrading or controlling and identifying types of obstacle functions. Overall, this study proposes an adaptive optimization logic system for CLM, advancing from supply-demand matching to utilization feature identification and composite zoning management. This approach provides valuable decision-making insights for harmonizing cultivated land use with resource endowments and human needs in the YRD and globally

    Dynamic Trajectories and Maturity of Farmer Collaboration for Biodiversity Sensitive Farming – Insights from the Framework Farmer Clusters

    ContextBuilding on the Farmer Cluster (FC) approach, which has emerged over the past decade in England to address ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss at the landscape scale, FRAMEwork, a Horizon 2020 project, established a network of eleven FCs across Europe.ObjectiveTo test the effectiveness of the FRAMEwork FCs, a new level of technological and scientific support was offered to the FCs providing a facilitated space for collaboration, co-production of knowledge, co-innovation, peer-to-peer learning, and monitoring.MethodsWe provide an overview of the eleven FCs and a comparative case study analysis to understand the dynamic trajectories and levels of maturity shaping the outcomes of the FCs. Expanding from the ‘success criteria’ of collaboration for sustainable agriculture by Velten et al. (2021), we identified five formative dimensions – governance, leadership, facilitation, group characteristics and context – influencing the outcomes of FCs, before analysing these dimensions in more detail.ResultsWe found that the five dimensions are interdependent and dynamic, affecting the functioning of the FCs, and leading to different levels of maturity. Comparing the situation of each FC regarding the five dimensions and the level of maturity we found that the FCs started in distinct contexts with diverse initial conditions across Europe – from favourable to unfavourable. This led to different dynamic trajectories on a pathway to biodiversity sensitive farming.SignificanceThe maturity assessment matrix offers a valuable tool for FCs to reflect on their progress and capacity in achieving their goals, guiding future efforts for effective FC management
