    No full text
This historical linguistic study aims to investigate what types of sound changes that happen in the process of linguistic borrowing from English to Esperanto and what factors triggered the changes. It is found that there are 195 English words that are borrowed according to the pronunciation, and there are four categories of sound change that is found: phonological, morphological, orthographically influenced, and abnormal sound change. Regarding the types of sound change, it is found that there are eleven sound changes: sound addition for morphological sound change (34%), vowel raising (13.1%), vowel lowering (7.7%), shortening (6.8%), monophthongization (6.2%), orthographically influenced sound change (4%), vowel raising and fronting (3.5%), fortition (2.7%), deletion (2.6%), vowel raising and backing (1.5%), and vowel lowering and backing (1.2%). It is discovered that the phonological sound changes happen to fulfill the phonological aspects of Esperanto, morphological sound changes occur due to the morphological rules of Esperanto, orthographically influenced sound changes happen to conform to the Esperanto phonological inventory and to maintain the original English spelling for easier word recognition, and abnormal sound change occur to fulfill phonological and morphological aspects of Esperanto with some influences from the orthography. Keywords: historical linguistics, sound change, loanwords, Esperanto, Esperanto studie

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze types of structural shifts found in the nominal groups and verbal groups a novel translation and investigate how the structural shifts affect the meaning. This study follows a descriptive qualitative method (see Cresswell (2009). The data of the study are taken from the novel entitled “The Fault in Our Stars” by Green (2012) and the Indonesian version translated by Nimpoeno (2016). The analysis of the study draws on Gerot and Wignell’s (1994) theory of nominal group and transitivity and Catford’s (1965) translation theory as the basis of the categorization of the structural shifts. The data analysis reveals that there are two types of structural shifts found in the data. Those are single translation shift that includes: 1) structure shift, 2) unit shift, 3) class shift, and 4) intra-system shift and double translation shift that is the combination of the shifts. The study shows that the most frequent shifts found in the structural shifts of nominal groups is the combination of structure and class shift (38.94%). On the contrary, the most frequent shift found in the verbal groups is intra-system shift (70.59%) which belongs to the single translation shift. The study shows that structural shifts slightly affect meanings of the translation. This study suggests that linguistic analysis can indicate how learning to translate requires linguistics knowledge of certain language as the expert translators conduct the translation. Oppression and Identity in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451

    Get PDF
This study explores the oppression and identity in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (henceforth, F451). It examines the portrayal of oppression in the F451 society and how these oppressions affect the main protagonist’s identity construction. To meet the purposes, the study was designed under cultural materialism approach and applies Young’s theory on oppression known as Five Faces of Oppression (1990) and Hall’s theory on identity as the theoretical framework of the study. The findings reveal that there are five forms of oppression evident in the novel: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. It also indicates that the main protagonist’s identity is constructed by the oppression that he observes and notices through his interaction with characters and things around him. As the result of these oppressions, Montag’s identity is transformed from ignorant to non-conformist. Seeing from the cultural materialism perspective, the fictional world of F451 is a metaphor of a more media-absorbed society of America 1950s. As such, this oppression should be resisted. In this case, Montag’s identity construction can be interpreted as the representation of the resistance. Thus, parallel to its context, F451 presages the threat of media dominance and at the same time offers a possible way to fight against it.Keywords: Oppression, Identity, Cultural Materialism, Fahrenheit 45

The Interplay Between Words and Images in Line™ Instant Messaging Service: A Multimodal Analysis

    No full text
The phenomenon of multimodal text in social media and instant messaging service is a challenge for linguists in analyzing today’s conversations which were traditionally dominated by verbal texts. Drawing upon the system of image-text relations proposed by Martinec and Salway (2005), this study focused on the interplay between words and images in students’ LINE conversations. It analyzed the status and logico-semantic relations and how those relations affect the meaning-making process in the conversations. This study employs descriptive qualitative method. This study found that the interplay between words and images in selected LINE conversations realized two status relations, which were equal-independent and unequal-image subordinate to text. The interplay between words and images in LINE conversations also realized three logico-semantic relations, which were extension, exemplification-image more general, and exposition. Both the stickers and verbal expressions were conveyed the meaning equally. Not all stickers were followed by verbal expressions, nevertheless, the participants still understand them. Based on the interviews, the stickers help the participants to visualize the facial expressions and gestures their friends used when communicating with them. Keywords: sexuality, conditioning, young adult dystopian, Deliriu

The Representation of Mount Slamet Disaster in The Online Media of Tempo and Time

    Get PDF
The present study examines the representation of Mount Slamet disaster in online media in two news practitioners, namely Tempo and Time. This study mainly employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data include twelve articles taken from Tempo and one article from Time related to Mount Slamet’s volcanic activity. The analysis employs the framework developed by van Dijk (2009), i.e. the socio-cognitive approach (SCA), which includes macrostructure and microstructure analyses. Halliday’s transitivity (Halliday Matthiessen, 2014) is used in microstructure analysis to examine the representation of experiences presented in the articles. The macrostructure analysis discloses three findings. These include the issues discussed in relation to the Mount Slamet disaster, the writing strategy of quotation, and the use of sources. Both Tempo and Time have a similarity of quotation strategy despite having differences in terms of variation of topics and the sources used in the articles. In microstructure analysis, the study reveals that both Tempo and Time represented the volcanic disaster mostly in material and verbal processes. The similar strategy of representation employed by the two media seems to be affected by the nature of the genre and the experience being represented. However, there is a wide difference in the number of reports made by the two media. This appears to result from different levels of concern: Tempo, as a local media, expresses more concern by writing many more reports than Time, an international media. Keywords: Socio-cognitive Approach, Representation, Mount Slamet Disaster, Online Medi
