“American idiot”: Examining Readers’ Subject Position in One of Green Day’s Albums
Full text linkThis research paper entitled “American Idiot”: Examining Readers’ Subject Position in One of Green Day’s Music Albums is aimed at investigating the ways by which the sixth album of Green Day, American Idiot (2004), ideologically positioned the implied readers in opposite to the USA political agenda. A qualitative descriptive study is employed in this present study. In analyzing the album, which consists of 13 songs, three theoretical frameworks are used: ideological analysis by John Lye (1997), context framework by Adrian Beard (2001), and John Stephens’ (1992) narrative transactions—where he locates the implied readers as the ideological function of a text. By having those frameworks within the analysis, the study discovers five socio-cultural issues, recognized as an attempt to position the implied readers in opposite the US political agenda in Bush administration. These assumptions within the issues known as a subject position are ideologically offered to the readers or the implied readers through narrative aspects; point of view and narrator. The Translation Procedures in Translating the Cultural Words in the Young Adult Novel
Full text linkThis research paper is entitled The Analysis of Cultural Words and Context In The Young Adult Novel Translation Entitled “Eragon”. The aim of this research is to find out the procedures which are used in translating the cultural words in the novel and which procedure is mostly applied in the translation of novel Eragon. The writer applied descriptive qualitative method in conducting this research. The primary data were divided into the original and translated versions which were analyzed by using the theory of Newmark (1988). Based on the findings, the writer found that the translator used seven procedures: naturalization, componential analysis, addition, transference, cultural equivalent, couplets, and transposition. Those procedures were used in order to make the translation acceptable and understandable, without changing the essence meaning of the story. By conducting the research, the writer can conclude that translation procedure helps the readers in understanding the message of the story and the different culture of the novel. Non-Observance of Maxims in Facebook Conversation (A Case Study in English Education Department)
Full text linkThis study was aimed at investigating types of maxims which are not observed by male and female Facebook users and how male and female users fail to observe a maxim in their conversation. This study involved 16 male and 15 female students majoring in English at one university in Bandung who have Facebook account. This study applied qualitative case study method. The data were in the form of conversations in Facebook that were downloaded from August until December 2012. The data were collected through several considerations of non-observance of maxims within the conversation based on Grice’s theory of conversational implicature. The collected data are analyzed through several procedures of identifying, classifying, calculating, and interpreting. The findings showed that male users commonly failed to observe the maxim of relation by giving irrelevant contribution (53.13%), while female users commonly failed to observe the maxim of quantity by giving more information (44%). In addition, flouting of maxim is the most frequent non-observance of maxim that was performed by both male and female users in their conversation (96.88% 92%). Thus, both users tended to make a joke, to stay close with friends, or just to contribute the conversation when they performed such non-observance of maxims.Keywords: Non-observance of Maxims, Facebook, Conversation, Cooperative Principle, Implicatur
Observance of Principles of Mutual Consideration (PMC) and Its Relation to the Presence of Three Levels of Politeness
Full text linkThe study entitled “Observance of PMC and Its Relation to the Presence of Three Levels of Politeness” investigates politeness realizations according to Principles of Mutual Consideration (PMC) between two different cultures and its relation to the presence of three levels of politeness: pre-event, on-the-spot, and post-event politeness as proposed by Aziz (2000). PMC works as a cause and effect logic wgich consists of four sub-principles: i.e. harm and favor potential, shared-feeling, prima-facie, and continuity principles. The main data of the study were retrieved from www.rcti.tv on 26th April, 2010 which contained the opening-part of an interview script between an Indonesian Journalist and the President of the Unites States. Using the PMC framework, the study found that there is balanced-order in observing PMC’s sub-principles. This is due to the fact that both the interviewer and the interviewee had the intention to favour one another. This was realized in their complete observance of four PMC’s sub-principles. The study concluded that the observance of PMC together with its three levels of politeness is mainly motivated to balance and create harmony.Keywords: Principle of Mutual Consideration (PMC), Three Levels of Politeness
Coming Of Age: An Analysis of A Young Adult Character Development In Ellen Hopkins’ Crank
Full text linkThe present research entitled Coming of Age: An Analysis of a Young Adult Character Development in Ellen Hopkins’ “Crank” is a textual analysis of Ellen Hopkins’ young adult fiction focusing on the issue of coming of age in the novel. The discussion focuses on the main female character in the story to reveal the ways coming of age issue is addressed in the novel. Therefore, the discussion is framed within the theories of the characteristic and development of young adult (Bucher and Hinton, 2010), coming of age (e.g. Millard, 2007 and Fox, 2010) and identity (Barker, 2002). The research utilizes a qualitative method particularly textual analysis. The result of the present research shows that coming of age describes a progress shift which is experienced by the main character, Georgia, from a teenage girl who is simple-minded to a mature adult with higher-level of thinking. In other words, coming of age issue shows the process of adolescents from immaturity to maturity. Keywords: Coming of Age, Young Adult, Character Development, Identit
