ENGLISH PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS A Descriptive Study of First Grade Students at an Elementary School in Northern Bandung
This study aims to investigate first grade students’ awareness in English phonology and the factors influencing English phonological awareness. This study employs a mixed method that uses quantitative and qualitative data such as an assessment test, the questionnaire, and the interview as the data collection. The result of the findings indicates that students’ performance on English phonological awareness emerges from the sound units in the level of syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme. Factors, for instance the chronological order of language acquisition and language proficiency, have a positive effect towards the performance of students’ English phonological awareness. The students may commit a transfer, between the target language and another language previously acquired, that can potentially influence the performance in language development. The reason is because the performance on English phonological awareness is as same as in Indonesian phonological awareness. Keywords: phonological awareness, factors influencing English phonological awareness, first grade students, English as a foreign languag
Stereotypical Portrayal of Indian and French in Richard C. Morais’ The Hundred-Foot Journey (2010): An Orientalism Study
Globalization has made understanding of cultural diversity more important. However, one challenge caused by cultural diversity is the existence of cultural stereotypes since stereotyping can lead to prejudice and discrimination. This study attempts to examine the stereotypical portrayals of the Indians and the French in Morais’ The Hundred-Foot Journey (2010) from Orientalism perspective since studies on this work are still limited. This study draws on Said’s (1978) theory on Orientalism. In addition, this study also employs Little’s (1966) theory on characterization to support the analysis of the data. The finding reveals the author presents Indian and French in a contrast way in which one is regarded as inferior and the other as superior. Furthermore, it is also found that the relation between them is similar to the relations between the Orient and the Occident which are argued by Said (1978) as a kind of relationship which distinguishes ‘self’ and ‘other’ that is filled with power and domination. The Quest of Identity of Kafka Tamura in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on The Shore
In order to explore the issue of identity construction of an adolescent character in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, this research uses Nikolajeva’s (2003) theory on implicit characterization and Trites’s (2000) theory on identity construction in young adult literature. By employing a narrative approach in a qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of the main character, Kafka Tamura, and his quest of identity, the findings reveal three main points. First, through the implicit characterization depicted in his preferences, Kafka is portrayed as a teenager who distances himself from the society. Second, the most prominent issue in Kafka’s quest of identity is triggered by father-centered conflicts. Third, sex and death in this novel are used as conflicts resolution. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the identity constructed by Kafka in the end of the novel is a compromised identity who learns to accept the norms and values of the society he intends to leave. The Realization of Strategies of Refusal to Direct Requests by Sundanese and Minangnese Students
This study seeks to examine the realization of strategies of refusal to direct requests by Sundanese and Minangnese students. This study also examines the contribution of power relation, social distance, and rank of imposition to the realization of the refusal strategies. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data used in the present study were gathered from a Discourse Completion test (DCT) that was distributed to 10 Sundanese and 10 Minangnese respondents. The data were analyzed by using Takahashi and Beebe’s (1987) classifications of refusal. The findings show that 13 (out of 16) refusal strategies of Takahashi and Beebe (1987) are evidenced in this study. It is found that from all the 13 strategies, statement of regret and excuse, reason, explanation are the two most frequently used strategies. It is also found that there is no substantial difference in terms of the strategies employed by both Sundanese and Minangnese students; however, some differences can be noted especially with regard to the use of mother tongue, in which Sundanese respondents mixed Indonesian with Sundanese more often than the Minangnese. The study also reveals that less power of the requesters, less social distance between the refusers and requesters, and lower rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the excuse, reason, explanation strategy as their first choice. Meanwhile, more power of the requesters, larger social distance between the refusers and requesters, and higher rank of imposition tend to lead the refusers to use the statement of regret strategyKeywords: Refusal, Sundanese, Minangnese, power, distance, impositio

To compare the results, four other participants who come from Jakarta and Bandung, have the same age and gender, and are not active speakers of any Indonesian local languages are also recruited. Based on the pilot test conducted prior to the research, the phonemes that are investigated are /e/, /ə/ and plosives (/b/, /d/, /g/, /k/, /t/, /p/). The data are collected through two types of assessment, which are a reading task, and pronunciation tests in the form of three word lists. By using software Praat, the deviations analysis and a further acoustic phonetic analysis of vowel and consonant duration are conducted. In general, there are two types of pronunciations deviations made by the participants: devoicing and allophonic shift that occurs between /ə/ into /e/ and /e/ into /ə/. Audiovisual Translation of Slang Words and Phrases and Their Types of Equivalence in 50/50 Movie
The study aims to identify the types of slang, subtitling strategies applied, and the types of equivalence discovered in the movie subtitle. There are three different theoretical frameworks employed in this study in order to analyze the data, those are the classification of types of slang based on the lexical meaning proposed by Finnegan et al. (1992) and the word-formation process proposed by Yule (1996), the subtitling strategies as proposed by Gottlieb (1992 in Ghaemi and Benyamin, 2010); and the types of equivalence by Kade (1968 in Pym, 2010). Descriptive Qualitative approach was employed as the research design in this study. There are 370 slang words and phrases as the collected data which were taken from 50/50 movie subtitle. The result revealed that out of 12 classifications of types of slang, there were 8 types identified, and Synonymy (55.14%) was the most frequent type of slang applied in the movie subtitle. Similar to the types of slang, there are 7 out of 10 subtitling strategies applied in the movie subtitle, and the most-used strategy applied in the movie subtitle was Transfer (43.43%). Furthermore, in types of equivalence, there are 3 out of 4 types with the most frequent type applied in the movie subtitle was One to Several equivalence (95.9%). In addition, in the combination of three analyses, Synonymy-Transfer-One to Several equivalence was mostly appeared simultaneously in the movie subtitle which has 73 occurrences. Therefore, it can be concluded that types of slang, subtitling strategies, and types of equivalence are correlated to each other. It happened because the subtitling strategies as the strategies which were used to translate the slang words and phrases resulted in the translated version of the slang that were classified into types of equivalence. Oppression and Identity in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451
This research investigates the representation of Jokowi’s figure as the governor of Jakarta, the presidential candidate, and the President of Indonesia in the Jakarta Post by using nomination and predication strategies of Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Reisigl and Wodak (2009). By employing descriptive qualitative method, this research examines fifteen editorials focusing on Jokowi. The findings reveal three main points. First, deixis and synecdoches become the nomination strategies that signify changes. The strategies signal that the Jakarta Post prefers to focus on Jokowi when he becomes the president since his every action represents the action that the government and Indonesia take. Second, the Jakarta Post prefers to use positive predication strategies in presenting Jokowi’s figure in all categories except in the KPK issue. Third, the signification of the representation indicates that nomination and predication strategies are employed to represent the shift in political support towards Jokowi: from positive to negative. The Jakarta Post supports Jokowi since his performance as a leader is in line with the Jakarta Post values. However, the fact that the Jakarta Post no longer gives him its full support on the KPK issue indicates that his action contradicts the Jakarta Post’s ideology that supports anticorruption movement. Keywords: Jokowi, the Jakarta Post, discourse historical approach, nomination strategies, predication strategie
