This study examines the relationship between narrative structure (tight and loose), English proficiency (Intermediate and Higher Intermediate) and the distributions of mid-pause of English students at Indonesia University of Education. This study employs a quantitative approach. Data were collected from narrating performance of 40 participants from English students at Indonesia University of Education. The performances were transcribed and the mid-pauses produced were analyzed by using paired t-test and independent t-test. The data analysis was based on cognitive information processing perspective (Schmidt, 1990). There are two important findings in this study. First, the findings show that L2 learners produce more mid-pauses when performing a tight structured narrative. Second, it is found that the performance of Higher Intermediate group is not affected by narrative structure. The findings may be useful for teacher and language tester as a consideration in choosing narrative task features to optimize the performance of learners. Keywords: mid-pause, tight structured narrative, loose structured narrative, cognitive perspectiv

    Get PDF
The present study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of slips of the ear by English Education Department students. Data were taken from 10 students from different semester and have minimum 500 TOEFL score. Data were analyzed qualitatively supported by descriptive quantification and based on Bond’s (2005) slips of the ear theories. The findings show that the errors occur in lexical level and syntactical levels. The factors of the occurrences of slips of the ear can be because of the lack of lexical knowledge, the accent and dialect, the unfamiliarity with the words, or difficulties in segmenting utterances. The result of this study shows that the errors which occur most in all categories is in syntactical level, which is ill-formed utterances. Furthermore, this study supports the previous studies of slips of the ear proposed by Kusumarasdyati (2005) who states that when the listeners misperceive the utterances, they will add, omit, or substitute the utterances. Keywords: slips of the ear, music, lyrics, lexical, synta

    Face Observance in Twitter Conversations

    Get PDF
This research entitled Face Observance in Twitter Conversationsis aimed at investigating the politeness strategies used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ face in Twitter conversations, the response given by the hearers, and the effects which may be resulted from (non) observance. This study employs a descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from conversations made in Twitter. This study showed that the four types of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) namely, bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record are used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ negative and positive face. The hearers’ response to the (non) observance done by the speakers by using different strategies may produce some effects to the conversation itself. The result shows that there are two kinds of effects resulted from (non) observance done by the speakers. The first effect is that the conversation goes well without any distraction while the second one is that the conversation is distracted or even stopped. It is suggested that positive politeness strategy seems to be the preferred choice taken by the participants in maintaining a conversation. Keywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness StrategiesKeywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness Strategie

    No full text
The novel entitled My Life as a Stuntboy is one of adolescent novels that has several issues to explore. The issue of power relation becomes the main focus of the present research, which is aimed to answer the question of what meanings can be made from the portrayal of parent–child power relation. Power relation in the novel is seen through the conflicts that occur specifically between parents and their child as the main characters of this novel. The data were analyzed by using Dekovic, Gracia-Ruiz, Hernandez-Cabrera, Maiquez, and Rodrigo (2012) conflict resolutions: negotiation and dominance, and Foucault’s (2003/2006) theory of power that states the power which occurs in familial relations includes sovereignty and disciplinary power. The findings of the research revealed that the conflicts in the parent-child relationship are triggered by parents’ expectations toward their child. The conflicts involved the issues related to studying, Frank the monkey, and the child’s wish. Overall, these conflicts were caused by the parents’ demands for the child to be more responsible. The role of society is also found to have affected the parents’ expectations toward their child’s behavior and future. Therefore, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the meaning that can be made from the portrayal of parent–child relationship is that parents use their power to teach their child to be responsible citizen. Keywords: adolescent literature, conflicts, power relations, parent-child relatio

    Get PDF
This study aims to find out the translation techniques used by the translator to do the act of censorship in translating the subtitle in Suicide Squad and Deadpool 2 movies. This study also analyzes the translation shift in the subtitle and acceptability of the translation. This study employs a qualitative method of data collection and analysis informed by Pinker’s (2007) profanity classification according to its purpose, Molina and Albir’s (2002) concept of translation and Newmark’s (1988; 1981) concept of transposition and translation acceptability. The study found five types of profanity based on its purpose in 213 utterances spoken by the movie characters and 11 translation techniques applied to those utterances. Those five types of profanity include idiomatically, abusively, cathartically, descriptively, and emphatically in the two movies. The study also found four types of translation shifts (automatic, grammatical structure, natural grammatical, lexical gap) as a means of maintaining the meanings of the source language (SL). The meanings shift as a result of an act of translation censorship strategies. The study shows that transferring meaning into other languages such as in the process of subtitling translation could incur potential changes in meaning. Keywords: censorship, profanity, translation techniques, translation shift, translation acceptability.

This study aims to examine the journey to maturity of the main character, Landon Carter, in A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, by analyzing the literary elements that construct it. Employing a textual analysis method, this study is framed within Allport’s (1961) theory of maturity, and to discuss the analysis, Bean and Moni’s (2003) theory of young adult literature is also employed. The findings show that Landon’s journey to maturity is depicted mostly through the use of one literary element, namely characterization peculiar to Reams’ (2015). Based on Allport’s (1961) general criteria of maturity, throughout the story, Landon shows six types of maturity: (1) extension of the sense of self, (2) warm relatedness of self to others, (3) emotional security, (4) realistic perception of skills, (5) self-insight, and (6) unifying philosophy of life, and three types of immaturity: (1) an ego-centric sense of self, (2) emotional insecurity, and (3) lack of self-insight. Based on the analysis, several moral values can be obtained by young adult readers with different perspectives from reading Landon’s journey to maturity, such as the importance of being mature and the struggles of attaining maturity. The present study examines the flouting and violation of maxims in a defendant’s court testimony. It also investigates the possible reasons for flouting and violation of maxims committed by the defendant. As a descriptive qualitative study, the data of the present study are in the form of transcripts of a defendant’s full testimony in the session 26 regarding the court of Olivier café murder case. By employing Grice’s (1975) theory of Cooperative Principle, the findings show that the defendant flouts the maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner. It is also found that the defendant only violates the maxim of quality. This present study also discovers that the reason to why the defendant flouts the maxims is generally to build a public image that she is innocent. Furthermore, the defendant violates the maxim of quality because of the intention to get a lesser sentence in the court. The findings suggest that the defendant of the court tends to flout and violate the maxims in giving her testimony to yield hidden additional meanings and intentions in her utterances as well as to mislead her audiences.
