The Realization of Ideational Meaning in Indonesian Folktales
The present study investigates how ideational meaning is realized in Indonesian folktales. Three folktales from three different regions were used as the data, namely Malin Kundang, Timun Mas, and Sangkuriang. The analyses were conducted by using the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory proposed by Halliday (1985) as the theoretical framework, mainly focusing on the concept of transitivity. The findings show that material process, relational process, and verbal process are dominantly used in the folktales. There are also the two most identified participants in the folktales, namely goal and actor. The circumstance of time and the circumstance of place become the most frequent circumstances in the folktales. Moreover, the context of situation influences the use of language in the folktales. There are some attributes attached to the subject matters being conveyed, which are about family issues and supernatural events. Lastly, the main participants in the folktales have a variety of attributes representing themselves and their relationships. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that Indonesian folktales used in this study reflect Indonesian’s cultural beliefs and way of life. Control and Resistance in a Young Adult Dystopian Fiction: A Foucauldian Reading of Marie Lu’s Legend
This research attempts to discover how a young adult dystopian novel entitled Legend by Marie Lu portrays a totalitarian government controls its subject and the way young adult characters resists to it. This research employs Foucault’s discipline technique and categorization of resistance. The findings shows that the controlling strategies in the society within Legend reflect two of Foucault’s techniques: geneses organization, and distribution system. Additionally, the controlling strategy is supported by terror and knowledge concealment. For the young adult resistance aspect, the characters’ resistance acts are found to be directed towards subjection and domination. The resistance is manifested through actions which embody two major characteristics, aggressive or submissive. In addition, Legend also demonstrates the use of discourse as a device to revolt. Ultimately, Legend appears to inherit the didactic nature of young adult dystopian literature as it cast warning about absolutism of certain group, the danger of a certain policy in current society, and the importance of knowledge, individuality and freedom of choice. Keywords: control, resistance, discipline, dystopia, young adult literatur
A Case Study of Multimodal Analysis: The Representation of a Female Model in the ‘Insight’ Rubric of Male Magazine 147th Edition
The present study entitled “A Case Study of Multimodal Analysis: The Representation of a Female Model in the ‘Insight’ Rubric of Male Magazine 147th Edition” aims at discovering the image of Indonesian women presented in the men’s magazine visually and verbally. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study applies multimodality based on Halliday’s (1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze the visual and verbal modes in the data. In the visual stage, the data are analyzed by Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) visual grammar, Wilfred’s (1962) meaning of colors, and Barnard’s (2007) theory of fashion and physical appearance. Meanwhile, the verbal data are analyzed Halliday’s (1994) transitivity. The findings show that the integrated visual and verbal modes complement each other to construct the image of the female model. The female model is visually represented as a physically and spiritually beautiful woman with aggressiveness. In addition, the female model is verbally represented as a hardworking, popular, and, curious woman who tends to use her feelings in life. Those representations can lead her to be the sex object for men yet powerful woman. In relation to the gender issue, the study concludes that the magazine reflects how women’s stereotypes change overtime depending on the cultural society. Keywords: Women’s representation, multimodality, visual analysis, verbal analysis, magazin
The Representation of a Social Actor in the Legal Issue of a Jakartan Highway Accident (A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Reports of Rasyid Rajasa in Two TV Stations)
The present study seeks to investigate the representations of Rasyid Rajasa regarding his highway accident in tvOne and RCTI news reports and the significance of the representations. This study employs a qualitative design with some measures of descriptive statistics and a perspective of CDA proposed by Fairclough (1995). The data include the selected four news reports of Rasyid Rajasa’s trial taken from youtube.com. The analysis uses theories of Transitivity and Thematization of Halliday (1994) in revealing the representations which signify underlying ideologies. The study reveals that Rasyid Rajasa is represented as guilty, a victim and as favored. From those representations, four ideologies are derived, namely democracy, capitalism, “fairness” in expressions and partiality in expressions. Translation Shifts in The Indonesian Subtitle of The Revenant Film: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach
This research aims to analyse translation shifts of nominal and verbal groups found in the Indonesian subtitle of The Revenant film, and observe how translation shifts affect the meanings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the transcription and subtitle of The Revenant film. This study follows Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) concept of nominal group and verbal group (transitivity) and Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts which includes level shift, structure shift, unit shift, class shift, and intra-system shift. The analysis shows that the process of translating involves single and double translation shifts. In nominal groups, the shifts were dominated by unit + intra-system shifts (40.87%). While in verbal groups, the shifts were dominated by intra-system shift (71.70%). Both shifts slightly affect the meanings of the translated text. This study suggests that linguistic analysis could provide research-based samples of how the experts conducted translation. An Analysis of Power Exercise in H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds
The novel entitled The War of the Worlds has several issues which is interesting to be studied. One of them is the issue of power which becomes the main focus of the present study. Since the novel portrays the war between humans and aliens (specifically, the Martians’ invasion of the Earthlings) and arguments among humans (the Earthlings) illustrate the exercise of power, the bases of power proposed by Raven (2008) are applied in this study to examine the power-related phenomena. Furthermore, the power exercise is analyzed by focusing on conflicts among characters, particularly the conflicts between the Martians and the Earthlings as well as the conflicts among the Earthlings. The findings of the study discovered that the distinctive way of exercising power, particularly in the conflicts, is through coercion and information. This shows that the way power is exercised in the novel is comprehended to be the way text shows its bias towards logical and empirical way of thinking. Representation of Male and Female Characters in Cerita Pendek Tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek: A Transitivity Analysis
This study is aimed at investigating the representation of male and female characters in the three short stories of Cerita Pendek tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek and revealing hidden meanings embedded in the representations by identifying the process type choices. This study employs a qualitative method and transitivity analysis proposed by Fairclough’s three-dimensional approach (1989) and Halliday’s transitivity (2004). Based on the analysis, all six process types of transitivity are embedded to male and female characters in which females have the highest number. It means that the short stories tend to represent male characters as a more passive participant while female characters as a more active and powerful participant. This study also finds that the female characters are still victimized by the male characters sexually and violently. The study suggests that the author intended to openly discuss the sexuality issue in Indonesian contexts from females’ perspective.
