Thematic Progression in Song Lyrics: Comparison of English Songs Lyrics Written by Indonesian and English Songwriters
The present study investigates the appearance of Thematic Progression and Lexicogrammatical Features in English song lyrics written by English and Indonesian songwriters by applying theories of Systemic Functional Grammar by using Hallidays Lexicogrammatical Features and Danes’ Thematic Progression framework. This study discovers that the thematic Progression patterns and Lexicogrammatical features found in the data are similar. This study revealed that in English song lyrics written by both Indonesian and English songwriters, the appearance of the most frequent Thematic Progression patterns and lexicogrammatical Features are similar. The data showed that Multiple Theme Progression appears as the most frequent Thematic Progression pattern. The data also showed the use of Personal Pronoun appears as the most frequent Lexicogrammatical feature. These findings suggested that the texts are coherent and, by the dominant use of personal pronoun ‘I’ and ‘you’, the songwriters tend to speak directly to their listeners so it could be easily understood by the readers/listeners. The Portrayal of Antihero in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather (1969)
This study aims to discover how the antihero is portrayed by Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1969) novel by Mario Puzo. The data were in the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues between the characters in the novel, which were then categorized into four types of characterization according to Rimmon-Kenan (2003), namely act, appearance, speech, and environment. Furthermore, the data were framed by conflictual points while identifying certain events and narrations that are considered as the portrayal of an antihero using the theory of antihero by Wilson et al. (2013). The data were then analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method to obtain deeper explanation and understanding. The result shows that the novel portrays Michael Corleone as an antihero for having the identical characteristics of an antihero proposed by Wilson et al. (2013), namely empathy, humility, self-awareness, flexibility, and an ability to acknowledge the uncertainty. Therefore, it is found that the characteristics of an antihero are not entirely dominated by negative traits as argued by Pangestu (2017), Jati (2018), and Garcia (2013). An antihero may have some negative traits, but they also have some positive ones. The findings of this study also indicate that the original antihero is the antithesis of a hero because an antihero portrays human nature in general. Keywords: antihero, portrayal, characterizatio
The Representation of Motivational Values in The Issue of Motivation on Pinterest Website A Semiotic Study
This study investigated the representation of motivational values in pictures and the myths underlying the representations. The data are ten pictures containing the issue of motivation retrieved from Pinterest website. This is a qualitative research framed in Barthes’ orders of signification theory (1972). The theory was used to discover the representation of motivational values while the theory of motives by Murray (2009) became the foundation in revealing the myths from the representations. The result shows that there are three classifications of the representation of motivational values, namely the motivational values in global context, the motivational values in the context of health, and the motivational values in the context of sport. Moreover, of the three motivational values, there are five values that stand out: hard work, independence, total action, focus, and benefit of having opportunities. With regard to the myth, there are two motives, namely the motive of achievement and the motive of counteraction. In addition, there are three elaborations in the motive of achievement: to overcome obstacles, to accomplish something difficult, and to master physical things. Furthermore, there are two elaborations in the motive of counteraction: to overcome weaknesses and to repress fear. This study suggests that besides motivational speech of particular people, any texts including pictures can serve as source for motivation. Keywords: Representation, Motives, Motivational values, Myths, Pinteres

The analysis shows that the process of translating involves single and double translation shifts. In single translation shift, structure shift is the most dominant translation shift (75,7%). In double translation shift, the most dominant shift is the combination of structure and intra-system shift (12,6%). The analysis also shows that the translation process involves the combination of unit and intra-system shift (0,8%), and the combination of class and unit shift (0,3%). This present study entitled Being Cunningham’s Women: The Portrayal of Women in Michael Cunningham’s The Hours is aimed to unearth the way in which Michael Cunningham, as a male author, portrays women in the novel The Hours. There Is No New York Today (2016) by Aan Mansyur is a poetry anthology that employs metaphors to deliver the themes of the poems. This study attempts to investigate how the metaphors work in conveying the theme of longing in the 10 selected poems of Aan Mansyur. The three theories, consisting of Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) conceptual metaphor theory, Kovecses’s (2010) common target and source domains formula, and Scheibe, Freund, and Baltes’s (2007) longing characteristics, are employed to unravel the types of target and source domains in the metaphors and examine the way the metaphors construe the persona’s state of longing. The findings show there are at least 28 metaphors of longing discovered in this study, wherein 10 target domains and 22 source domains are identified. Based on the analysis of these metaphors, longing becomes the major theme expressed throughout the poems. The persona is found to encounter five longing characteristics, namely feeling of incompleteness, persona utopia, emotional ambivalence, tri-time focus, and reflective and evaluative component. The dominant longing characteristic found in this study is feeling of incompleteness, in which mostly conveyed by the natural forces as the source domain. The variety of metaphors are proven to conveyed the theme of longing differently, as different characteristics appear to show different side of longing encountered by the persona. In this study, the metaphors are proven to take a crucial part in conveying the abstract concept of human feeling, namely longing, as well as enriching the meaning of the longing in the poem into several layers, from the negative state to the positive developmental one. An Analysis of Écriture Féminine In the Selection Series: The One (2014) Novel
This paper aims to investigate écriture féminine features in The Selection Series: The One novel written by Kiera Cass (2014). Female writers of dystopian literary works have increased in the past current years. The fact that the story of The Selection Series by Kiera Cass is narrated from a female perspective in a patriarchal country has drawn a connection to feminist study. This research used descriptive qualitative method and textual analysis that employs the theory of Écriture féminine by Helene Cixous (1976) and patriarchy by Gerda Lerner (1986). It is found that two primary features of écriture feminine, namely patriarchy and bisexual writing, are depicted in the novel as being interrelated. Patriarchy in the novel is mostly found in public sphere; therefore, a large amount of evidence of bisexual writing is found as responses to the patriarchal system. Three main forms of bisexual writing are found in the novel: negotiation, empowerment, and plurality. It seems that Kiera Cass successfully adapts écriture féminine in her novel. However, the end of the story of The One (2014) also implies that the deconstruction of patriarchy occurrs when there are acceptance and willingness of plurality, not only from women but also from men. Keywords: bisexual writing, dystopia, écriture feminine, patriarchy.
