Racialising French Practices of Secularism (Laïcité): A Portrait of the ‘Cyber-Abuse’ of Muslim and Islamic Attributes on Twitter Platforms in 2023
This study is motivated by the ongoing debates surrounding France and Islam over the past decade, particularly the re-emergence of laïcité as a historical ideology rooted in the late 18th century. The research aims to examine how French citizens express their perspectives on issues related to Islam, Islamofobia, and Muslim identity through narratives on Twitter, and to analyze how the racialization and marginalization of laïcité are perceived comprehensively. Using tweet harvesting for data collection and analysis facilitated by MAXQDA, the study identifies key events in 2023 that sparked public discourse: the ban on the abaya in schools and the celebration of Hanukkah at the Presidential Palace. Analysis of tweet content reveals three primary groups of public opinion: feminists (notably in the context of the abaya), nationalists who advocate for laïcité, and neutral humanists who, while often critical, also challenge the racialization of political actions. In addition to the frequent use of offensive language and calls for the exclusion of Muslims opposing government policies, secondary sources indicate tangible forms of racialization in society. These findings highlight that many view the Muslim population as outsiders, despite being born and raised in France
Tradition Amidst Modernization: The Rise and Fall of the Tradition of Pesta Tebu in Cirebon District, West Java
This article examines tradition amidst modernization focusing on the rise and fall of the Pesta Tebu tradition and its relationship with the technological advancement of sugar factories in Cirebon district, West Java. Two villages were selected for this study as they represent sites where the Pesta Tebu tradition experienced the rise and fall in the face of modernization. This article uses a comparative method with a qualitative approach and the techniques of non-participant observation and interviews for data collection. Employing the narrative method as a data analysis technique, this study argues that modernization in the form of industrialization of sugar production resulted in the rise and fall of the Pesta Tebu tradition. When the management of the sugar factories renewed the technology of sugar production, the Pesta Tebu tradition survived and continued, but when this was not the case, the Pesta Tebu tradition died out. All this shows that modernization did not destroy tradition, but rather contributed to the rise and survival of tradition within communities. Comparing two cases of the Pesta Tebu tradition, this article contributes to a better understanding of the impact of modernization on tradition in that industrialisation resulted in a varied impact on tradition
City Leadership in Para-Diplomacy: The Case of Jakarta’s International Engagement in Addressing COVID-19 Pandemic
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the world communities, including the interactions among governments. While some governments chose to conflict with others or overlooked the pandemic, the rest attempted to collaborate in addressing the new global threat. Cities in many countries were the most suffering regions due to the enormous virus-confirmed cases, deaths, and economic declines, intertwining with other urban issues. As the largest city in Southeast Asia and Indonesia, Jakarta could not avoid this unprecedented crisis. However, apart from the efforts to tackle the crisis at home, the city showed its international engagement in addressing the issue together with other world cities as its para-diplomacy. This article aimed to answer the driving factors that encouraged the city for such engagement. It employed the qualitative method with descriptive analysis and the city leadership theory proposed by Rapoport, Acuto and Grcheva. The article found that Jakarta’s international engagement in addressing the pandemic as the city leadership action was driven by the role of city leader, decentralization and global city networking, and the regional COVID-19 policies and internet representing three elements in the theory: actor, structures, and tools. It argues that cities within the global city networking have demonstrated their stronger role during the pandemic, providing opportunities for nation branding by regional initiatives in handling the pandemic in addition to state foreign policy. This study, then, contributes to the studies the city leadership in responding to global issues that merit attention among scholars
From Togetherness to Individualism: The Evolving Meaning of Ngabuburit Among Teenagers
The tradition of ngabuburit among teenagers has experienced significant transformation due to advancements in technology and the influence of popular culture. This study employs qualitative methods to (1) explore how teenagers interpret the ngabuburit tradition in the digital era, (2) identify the factors driving changes in its meaning, and (3) analyze the social impacts of these changes on teenagers' lives. Findings reveal that ngabuburit activities have shifted toward individualistic and consumerist tendencies, such as spending time in trendy locations and showcasing moments on social media, rather than fostering spirituality and togetherness. This study highlights the deep influence of digitalization on local traditions and underscores the challenges of preserving traditional values in an evolving cultural landscape
Perceptions and Decision-Making Regarding Childfree Choices Among College Students in Indonesia: A Study at Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung
This article examines the perceptions and decision-making processes regarding the concept of being childfree (choosing to live without children) among students at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This university provides a compelling case for study due to its mission of cultivating mentally, spiritually, and intellectually capable individuals. The emphasis on 'spirituality' highlights the expectation for UIN Bandung students to develop a strong understanding of religion, which influences decision-making, including on social and religious issues such as the childfree phenomenon. This study seeks to explore UIN Bandung students’ perceptions of the childfree phenomenon, identify the factors influencing these perceptions, and analyze their decision-making processes regarding childfree choices. Using a descriptive method with a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys and unstructured interviews. The findings reveal that the majority of UIN Bandung students perceive the concept of being childfree negatively. Factors influencing their perceptions include internal factors, such as personality traits (attitudes, interests, and experiences), and external factors, such as societal conditions. The study categorizes student decision-making into three groups: those who perceive childfree negatively and desire to have children, those who perceive childfree positively and choose to remain childfree, and those who perceive childfree positively but still desire to have children
Digital Sovereignty and State Power: Indonesia’s Approach to Digital Platforms Regulation
The growing influence of digital platforms has sparked debate over the ideal balance of sovereignty in regulating their operations. While digital sovereignty is essential for safeguarding against external influences, it also risks granting governments extensive control over citizens. Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information (MoCI) Regulation No. 10 of 2021 (MR 10/2021), which governs private-sector Electronic System Organizers, exemplifies this tension. This article examines MR 10/2021’s rationale and impact on Indonesia’s digital society through thematic analysis of YouTube content and discussions with MoCI representatives. The findings reveal that the platform registration mandate reflects a state-centric view of digital sovereignty, emphasizing territorial authority and control. However, a disconnect emerges between the regulation’s stated objectives—such as promoting fair competition, protecting users, and mapping digital industry players—and its implementation. By equating digital platforms with traditional businesses, the regulation facilitates governmental access to electronic data and systems for monitoring, content removal, and law enforcement. To achieve its goals more effectively, the study advocates refining MR 10/2021 and introducing sector-specific policies tailored to the unique dynamics of digital platforms
From Legal to Customary Approach: Seeking an Alternative Policy on the Coastal Area Solid Waste Management in Jambi, Indonesia
The waste issue in coastal areas is an important and urgent problem for maritime regions like Indonesia. The task of the government in coastal areas is more complex than in mainland areas because the problem of coastal waste is more complex, and it causes more environmental impacts. This article analyzes waste management policies in the coastal areas of Jambi Province, especially in East Tanjung Jabung Regency. The research uses literature study as the primary method, supported by qualitative field studies on government and community paradigms on waste management regulations. The study shows that the East Tanjung Jabung Regency Government has a waste management policy, but none specifically concerns coastal or marine waste. However, the waste management program in the coastal area has not been implemented due to various technical reasons, especially geographical conditions, which are difficult to reach from the district capital. These constraints are caused by the positive regulation paradigm, in which the laws in Indonesia are hierarchically stopped at the district/city level so that waste management work is concentrated in the district government. The village government has the right to issue village regulations, but innovation in village regulations still needs improvement, especially in Jambi Province. This condition allows the decision maker to uphold the customary approach as a local alternative policy. Â
Spiritual Resilience as Immunity to Stress during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Sociological Perspective
This study examines spiritual resilience from a sociological standpoint and as a sort of immunization against stress during pandemic times. The Piedmont theory of the spiritual dimension was used in this study to address the question of how the mental health of the stay-at-home mother was impacted by spiritual resilience, and George Herbert Mead's theories of symbolic interactionism were used as an analytical tool to examine spiritual resistance from a sociological perspective. By gathering samples from household mothers in the Cirebon district, the study employs a qualitative descriptive method of case studies. The findings indicate that household mothers' mental health was significantly impacted by their spiritual endurance. By having spiritual resilience, household mothers could give positive meanings to their social thoughts and actions. This article attempts to make a significant contribution to the study of the role of household mothers in facing the challenges and stresses of pandemic times
Increasing Women's Resilience to Disasters: An Analysis of Gender Mainstreaming in Natural Disaster Management in Bantul, Indonesia
This article looks at how to enhance women's resilience to natural disasters in Bantul, as women are frequently classified as vulnerable groups. It employs qualitative methodologies, utilizing a case study methodology. Data were generally collected through interviews with disaster management authorities and planning sources. Other data were gathered secondarily through library examination, which includes papers, mass media, and other related documents. The findings indicate that the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Bantul has taken positive strides in incorporating gender factors into disaster management strategy. This includes measures to promote women's participation in planning processes, identify special hazards for women, and strengthen women's disaster preparedness. With this discovery, BPBD of Bantul district supports women in the face of disasters by strengthening their capacity through disaster management training and education, as well as disaster planning, in the hope that women's groups can increase women's roles in protecting themselves. This study adds to our understanding of gender marginalization in disaster management and can be used by the government to build more effective policies and programs that involve women in long-term disaster response efforts and promote gender equality
Ups and Downs in Qatar-Israel Relations: A Constructivist Analysis of Wendt's “Three Cultures of Anarchyâ€
This research conducts a constructivist analysis of Alexander Wendt's "three cultures of anarchy," using the case study of Qatar-Israel relations. It explores how Wendt's concept can be applied to examine the structure, roles, and cultural dynamics shaping the interactions between these two states through various phenomena and issues. The study reveals that the relationship between Qatar and Israel has experienced fluctuations. Initially, both countries shared a collective identity, facilitating interaction and problem-solving. However, shifts in domestic, regional, and international representations have rendered this identity less relevant over time. The research adopts qualitative methods and descriptive analysis, utilizing data from literature reviews, including books, journals, articles, and online sources. Grounded in a constructivist approach and Wendt's cultural theories, it examines international politics by identifying the evolution of cultural representations, logic, and internalization in state relationships. Findings indicate that the representations in Qatar-Israel relations are asymmetrical. While Israel perceives its friendship with Qatar as significant, Qatar’s influence in the relationship remains limited. This study underscores the role of identity, culture, and representation in shaping interstate dynamics and offers insights into the complexities of their interactions
