Proyeksi Astral: Analisis Wacana Fiksi Posmodern dalam Naskah Film Insidious
This study aims to analyze astral projection as a concept of Death and Dying by using a postmodern fiction discourse analysis perspective in Insidious movie script. This study found that astral projection is a capability possessed by a person to leave physical body and explore an astral world or the spirit world. Astral projection is a death and dying concept that is presented as one of the postmodern fictional strategies known as superimposition. This strategy illustrates that there are two worlds that accumulate and co-exist with each other. Its presence is a way of deconstructing thoughts about something that is considered uncanny and unusual as well as a counterpart of totality that puts the ontological side of the existence of something. It is said by McHale (1987) that it is a sister-genre of postmodern fiction. Science fiction explores ontological issues in order to build a good story while postmodern fiction simply presents the problem without having to build a story. Furthermore, both genres can adopt each other's strategies. Meanwhile, postmodern fictional relations and fantasy fiction are the same, borrowing strategies for exploring ontological issues
Being a Sensible Woman: Hypertextuality in Grimm’s Fairy Tale and Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing
The re-writing of a fairy tale caters for characters, settings and values that have undergone changes, be it explicit or implicit. In Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing, the main female character Jena is transformed from the passive and obedient Twelfth/Youngest Princess of Grimm’s The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes into a brave and sensible figure. She challenges the oppression of patriarchal rules by taking control of her household in her father’s absence, securing her four sisters’ welfare, and keeping secret of their nocturnal dancing trips in the Other Kingdom despite being threatened by her domineering male cousin. In this way, Gerard Genette’s Hypertextuality strives to investigate the underlying patterns manifested in both literary works by applying the Re-vision element. Through it, Jena’s and the Twelfth/Youngest Princess’ sensibility trait and the socio-cultural settings surrounding them are highlighted in order to determine the importance of the overall hypertextuality process that takes place between the two. Later, Jena emerges as the more influential heroine than her predecessor character because she does not stop struggling to be regarded as an independent young woman who can always give advice and make decisions for her family affairs sensibly. Also, it is eventually proven that sensibility is indeed a strong weapon to be possessed by women in order to empower themselves against the conventions of a patriarchal world.
NOVEL CHARLOTTE KARYA DAVID FOENKINOS: SEBUAH NARASI TENTANG DISKRIMINASI, RASISME, DAN HOLOCAUST
The Nazi ruling since 1933 made no secret of his dislike of Jews. Adolf Hitler even declared that "rational antisemitism must lead to a system of legal opposition, the ultimate goal of wiping out all Jews" (Mein Kampf, 1925: 27). He also developed the idea that Jews are the evil race that dominates the world. Nazi anti-Semitism is instilled in religious situations and in a political context. Then, the Nazis added a further dimension, racial anti-semitism. With the logic that Jews are not religious but racial communities, the Nazis launched various aggressions in the form of discriminatory, racist, and Holocaust. This dark phenomenon in human history is revealed in Charlotte's novel by David Foenkinos, a French writer who often receives literary awards. The discussion will be conducted by descriptive analysis method through structural approach which includes assessment of character, background, and point of view. Shame and Alienation in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis
This article explores Sartre’s concept of shame and alienation in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis through the portrayal of the protagonist. By focusing on the interpretation of the characteristics of Gregor Samsa through New Criticism approach, this article reveals that shame and alienation may occur when a person realizes that one is judged by others and sees oneself through the eyes of others. This way of looking at one’s identity is problematic because it creates complexity within the existence of the self. Through his fantastical transformation into an insect, Gregor cannot help but seeing himself from his family’s point of view. Instead of fighting for himself, he is made to believe that he deserves to be alienated. From the analysis of the protagonist, it is revealed that his being selfess and dutiful in a way trigger the shame and alienation that result in his submission to death.
