Nuove ricerche sull’Arciconfraternita di San Girolamo della Carità

    Get PDF
Among all the brotherhoods of the modern age the Archbrotherhood of St Jerome of Charity plays a key role. It was set up in Rome before the Council of Trent and is still active now after many events and changes. Between the XVI and the XIX century the Charity was known especially for its activities in favor of convicts. Between 1551 and 1583 Philip Neri played an active part in the life of the Archbrotherhood and lived in St Jerome of Charity where the Congregation of the Oratory was created. Currently a study is being made on the history and the development of the Charity, analyzing the statutes, the accounts books, the contribution of the congregation and the commissions the works of art by the Archbrotherhood. In this way it will be easier to define the importance and the role of the Charity and at the same time the history of the first years of the Oratorian adventure

    A proposito di Troy

    Get PDF
Speaking of “historical mistakes” with reference to “Troy” is nonsense, for the simple reason that the movie is inspired to a myth, and the myth is the result of fantastic amplification and transfiguration of historical events. The Trojan war was very different from its poetical (not only Homeric) representations: as historians such as Moses Finley showed, it was not a ten-year-long siege, but probably a series of short raids aiming at plunder. As a matter of fact, the post-Homeric epics describe Achilles as a thug and the Myrmidons as a band of robbers, spoiling temples and abducting daughters of priests. Besides, at the time of the Trojan war the Myceneans were considerably impoverished in comparison with the wealth of the previous centuries, and so they needed new lands to conquer and sack. Also the so-called “unfaithfulness” towards the Iliad is a false problem, if one considers that the myth of the Trojan war was told by many poets and writers in different ways and from different points of view (for instance, the authors of the Roman era, such as Virgilius, Seneca, Dracontius, show a deep sympathy for the Trojans, who were considered the ancestors of the Romans). Historical and archaeologic evedence can help us to understand the big efforts done by the filmamaker, but also by the production designer, in order to reproduce the epic atmosphere, and to appreciate the breathtaking battle sequences (particularly the duel between Hector and Achilles), the magnificent scenery (especially the palaces of Agamenon and Priamus, and the Greek camp), and the accuracy in reproducing weapons and armour, which contribute to personalize the single characters: for instance, just like in Homer, only Ajax fights in the Mycenean way, while Achilles and Hector employ more recent tactics

Ancora sul rapporto tra ferrovia e beni archeologici ed architettonici

There is a brief description of the unique relation between the railway system, whose main actor is Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railways) and the cultural and archaeological heritage on the national territory. That relation dates back to the period during which the railway was introduced in Italy, before the unification of Italy. As the country developed that relationship became more intense and it started to play a key role during the works for the High Speed/High Capacity (AV/AC) lines. Those works were fundamental as they led to findings and helped the conservation and promotion of important archaeological findings, that was something really innovative. In conclusion it is advisable to reflect upon this in order to find, after positive experiences, one more serious line of action for Ferrovie dello Stato for the safeguard and the use of artistic, architectonic and archaeological heritage placed along the railways

Integrated techniques to evaluate the features of sedimentary rocks of archaeological areas of Sicily

    Get PDF
Sicily includes a great variety of lithologies, giving a high complexity to the geologic landscape. Their prevalent lithology is sedimentary. It is well known that rocks of sedimentary origin, compared with metamorphic and volcanic deposits, can be relatively soft and hence fairly easy to model. Nevertheless, this workability advantage is a drawback for Cultural Heritage applications. In fact, these materials show a high porosity, with pore-size distributions that lead to deterioration through absorption of water. In this paper, several sedimentary rocks used in historical Cultural Heritage items of Sicily, from "Magna Graecia" to nowadays, are classified for mineralogical features, chemical composition, and for porosity. Particularly, some samples collected in quarries relevant to the archaeological sites of 41 Agrigento, Segesta and Selinunte will be considered and characterized using integrated techniques (XRD, XRF, NMR and CT). Data on samples obtained in laboratory will be compared with the relevant values measured in situ on monuments of historical-cultural interest of the quoted archaeological places

    Tursi: la Rabatana

There are many important factors which make the town of Tursi an exceptional case in the pattern of human settlements in Basilicata: to begin with, it was the Capital of Leukanía, the third Byzantine thema of the Catepanate of Italy; then, it acquired a certain Islamic character due to the highest point of the old town, called “Rabatana”; finally, it gained importance because of its geomorphological context, characterized by major deterioration factors and a high level of environmental vulnerability. Because of these reasons, and in the framework of a project called “Integrated multimedia cataloguing of the Cultural Heritage” (see Law n. 513/99), the Sassi di Matera Foundation decided to entrust the former International Institute of Frederician Studies, now known as Institute for Archaeological Heritage – monuments and sites (a branch of CNR, the National Research Council) with a systematic study of the history of Rabatana (roughly coinciding with the historical centre of the Basilicatan town) and its different aspects: its urban layout, its historical and artistic heritage, its environmental factors, its geomorphological features, its typological models, its architectural remains, and its historical and artistic heritage. The study will be carried out by means of techniques and methods ranging from the analysis of historical documents to the use of more complex survey tools such as aerial photogrammetry, cartography, micro-toponomy, the analysis of building elements and techniques, environmental research, seismic evaluation, geomorphological and hydrogeological risk assessment, infrared technology, GIS and so on. Thanks to the multidisciplinary approach of these different forms of knowledge, a large amount of data emerged, which made it possible to suggest a broader yet more targeted interpretation of the urban fabric

Il progetto Salvalarte respira pulito: uno strumento operativo multidisciplinare per la conservazione e la fruizione dei Beni Culturali nella Regione Sicilia

The present work concerns the description of the contents and of the methods of the project “SALVALARTE respira pulito” (“SAVE ART and breathe clean air”) promoted by Legambiente, ARPA and the Regional Center for the Project and the Restoration of the Region Sicily, in cooperation with the University of Palermo. The goal of the project was to analyze and collect information on the condition of the cultural heritage in Sicily. The purpose of the goal was both to provide guidelines for the safeguard, the promotion and the correct use of cultural sites, adopting a more scientific approach of the problem which would be divided in three phases: detection and cataloging of the cultural heritage at risk, monitoring of a significant sample of monuments that might represent the whole nation, and finally diffusion of the results. The activities carried out in 2003 enabled the definition of an optimal monitoring procedure. The main test of validation of the survey and analysis methodology was executed considering Corso V Emanuele in Palermo as case-study, since it is where many and important monumental elements and structures are located

Le biotecnologie molecolari per la caratterizzazione e la valutazione del ruolo dei microrganismi nei processi di degrado di manufatti di interesse storico artistico

This work presents the application of some molecular biology techniques with high interest in cultural heritage field. These methodologies have proved to be extremely useful to characterize microbial communities colonization and their potential involvement in deterioration processes, mainly because it become possible curried out cultural-independent studies of microorganisms in both organic or inorganic substrates. These methods can be easily suited to study the biodeterioration of cultural heritage and, in the future, their application will be essential in conservation and/or restoration projects

Antichi manufatti ipogei: le fosse granarie di San Giovanni in Marignano (Rimini)

The study focuses on the analysis of the hypogeous pits for the conservation of cereals in the historical center of San Giovanni in Marignano (Rimini). This small town in the low Valle del Conca (Conca Valley), on the border between Marche and Romagna, 3 km away from the sea, has a high concentration of underground silos protected by a fortified enclosure, this was known already in the late Middle Ages. Those silos were used to store the cereal products of a very productive territory, it is a sort of “wheat bank”, a huge container for cereals that was the reason why the castle in modern times was called: “The barn of the Malatesta family” (noble family). Some research was carried out in archives and according to notarial sources of the XIV-XVI centuries, and it was confirmed by other information from ancient city statutes and printed texts (XV-XIX centuries) concerning the problems on the conservation of wheat and on the making of underground silos. That research provided interesting information on the making, the placing and the capacity of these pits, furthermore recently a diagnostic exploration was executed in the underground of San Giovanni in Marignano, analyzing high-frequency electromagnetic waves penetrating into the ground (Ground Penetrating Radar), such exploration located and detected precisely the pits
