Paolo Bufalini and the classics: towards a digital edition of his “Note-Book”
The paper presents some projects related to Paolo Bufalini, who was an eminent politician and antifascist,
and his interest in the classics. A note-book of his annotations from Latin and modern authors
written between 1981 and 1991 is examined. Bufalini often linked these authors to current events,
or to considerations concerning phenomena of an existential or political nature. As tge Note-book is
full of his corrections, notes and translations, it is an interesting document about the life of a leading
intellectual in post-war Italy. As a result the paper examines how to produce a digital edition based
on XML (Extensible Markup Language); this included firstly, the encoding of all the textual, informative
and structural elements of the text (adopting the TEI lite scheme), and secondly the graphic representation
of the encoded elements (quotations, annotations, corrections, underlining etc.) on the
final page, viewable by the user through an internet browser. We also present two further projects:
a new printed edition of the Horatian translations by Bufalini, and an online catalogue of Bufalini’s
manuscripts on Horace which can be found at the Study Centre “La Permanenza del Classico”
And so Europe got its own birth... And this is how Europe was born...
They declared themselves to be no slaves or subjects to any leader: this is how the Chorus describes the Greeks to queen Atossa, mother of Serse in the Persian by Aeschylus. That was the symbolic sign impressed on the immediate image of European civilization from its very origins. The following eras would have been in contradiction with this starting proud declaration of psychological, and then physical independence; but today, still and again, in the precarious state of territories and geographical borders, we must remind that it is the true essence that makes us European. We can still find the deep core of this identity in the Greek devotion to an absolute rationality, to the logos of the philosophers of dual Greece – both in Athens and Italy, first in Elea and then in Rome – and that the revelation contained in the Bible – translated into Greek by seventy two learned Jews at the time of Tolomeo Filadelfo – will definitely strengthen the idea of a Creator different from what he has created

Chromatic alteration on marble surfaces analysed by molecular biology tools
The patina represents a superficial natural alteration of the constituting matter of the work of art. It emerges from the natural and usual stabilization process that the materials of the surface undergo because of the interaction with outdoor agents characterizing the surrounding environment. Besides, it is not linked to an obvious phenomenon of degradation that can be noticed through the change in the original colour of the matter. This is what we intend when we talk about biological patina usually generated by macro and/or micro-organic colonization (fungi, bacteria, alga) which contributes to surface bio-deterioration and thus lead to the formation of orange, red or even brown and dark pigmented areas. The presence of chromatic alterations (rose-coloured areas), as a consequence of bacterial colonization, was most particularly pointed out in different sites, such as in the marble slabs on the facades of both the Cathedral of Siena (Duomo di Siena) and the Certosa of Pavia. The present study shows an example of chromatic alteration of the surface of marble works due to bacterial colonization

Paladini’s activity in Vizzini (Catania): constituent materials and executive techniques
The present study aiming at defining the constituent materials and understanding the executive techniques used by Filippo Paladini during his painting heyday, perfectly displays the main characteristics of the painter’s ability – famous expression of the manneristic Tuscan and Tuscan-Roman culture with a clear emphasis on the new expressionist style and methods introduced after Caravaggio’s works. Some technical information in terms of Paladini’s technique were gathered, focusing the attention on
some depictions corresponding to the mature period of the artist. We here refer to three important and relevant art works executed in Vizzini (Sicily, Catania) – respectively the Madonna of Mercede,
the San Lorenzo Martyrdom and the Deposition – in a fair conservation state
