Soft Skill: Its Urgency and Development at Islamic Higher Education
Get PDFThe success of a person in a career work is not only determined by his or her technical capability, but also the non-technical skills which is so called ‘soft-skills’. It is an attitude which is exemplified among the cognitive and values in the interaction with people around. Several identified falures in the community’s life indicate that many Islamic university graduates suffered from lack of ability to build harmonious relationship with the environment. Therefore, it is a high time for this institution to consistently instil some types of soft-skills on the parts of the students. The current study shares the urgent needs for developing students’ soft-skills for Islamic colleges and universities. The paper ends up with several conclusions while promoting some commitments to be held by the faculty development including: the identification of soft-skills that have already existed in the students’ minds and which need to be developed, the exploration of soft skills attributes for the next 5 years based on the inspiration or opinion of the stake holders and alumnaes, the setting of action plan for academic and non-cademic agendas, acting out the planned activities, as well as the sustainable blue-print of valid soft-skills. Copyright © 2014 by Al-Ta'lim All right reserve

Get PDFis a direct advice to facilitate learners to overcome problems they encounter, and enable them to take the best decision for themselves with full of responsibility. Concept of psychological strength presented in this paper is promoted by Cavanagh (1982).  Theorists contend that psychological strength constitutes the power to generate an individual to act in all sphere of his life. The concept of psychological strength consists of three dimensions including: need fulfillment, intrapersonal competencies, and interpersonal competencies. Seffen (2009) defines psychological strength as one’s personal quality that is reflected in his ability to respect himself and other people in life, including the ability to make good relationship with friends, family, and other person, together with the ability to carry out interpersonal communication. This personal power can be developed in the process of individual counseling.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Ta'lim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i2.3
METHODS OF TEACHING ISLAMIC FIQH
Get PDFThis paper examined the most important methods used in the teaching of Islamic fiqh at the university level. The paper identified two types of methods and highlighted their advantages and disadvantages. The study particularly highlighted the Islamic perception of the methods and the optimal characteristics of a fiqh instructor. The paper concluded with a number of suggestion and recommendation that’s my correct the course of university teaching of Islamic fiqh. IMPROVING SOPHOMORE LISTENING ABILITY BY USING TOEIC AND TOEFL EXERCISES AT STKIP ABDI PENDIDIKAN PAYAKUMBUH
Get PDFThe role of listening skills in EFL learning is very crucial not only for academic purpose but also for daily communication. In university level, especially at STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh, students are exposed to listening I until listening III. In academic year 2012-2013, however, students were taught through Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and TOEIC to upgrade their critical listening skills. After several treatment or actions, I found out that students’ listening skills improved from 61.2 (in the pretest) to 73.5 (post-test). It seemed that both TOEIC and TOEFL exercise have attracted the students’ mind that in the second cycle their enthusiasm increased surprisingly.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Ta'lim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.4
THE SHIFTING PARADIGMS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CLT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA COUNTRIES
Get PDFForeign languages teachers in South East Asia have recently been encouraged to adopt an approach known as Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). This approach advocates the development of communicative competence as a main goal through the extensive use of the target language as a mean of communication during the classroom sessions. Since the concept of CLT is taken from the West, it might be ill-suited to EFL contexts because of misunderstandings surrounding its theory and practice among EFL teachers. The objective of this paper is to determine the implementation of CLT approach in EFL teaching in Southeast Asia which is commonly reported by English teachers and researchers literally. The findings of the study provide pedagogical implication for EFL classroom practices

Get PDFHuman beings as individuals and social beings are constantly faced with various problems or issues that they encounter in almost every side of life. Precise decision making is required to overcome these problems so that all of the alternative solutions can be achieved optimally. One’s position in an organization or institution has often been distracted by some polices and decision, and therefore, he or she has to consider solutions while keeping the organization runs well.  This is so because in every organization whether big and small, the changing of situation such as personnel shift has often raised conflict and misunderstanding. These problems must be avoided or clarified. Policy and decision making in substantive Islamic education is not too much different from the common theories of policy and decision-making.
