Message Design of Printed and Digital Material to Meaningful Learning
This article reports on research a message design of printed and digital message in Learning Theory course at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Survey was conducted to collect data on the utilization of instructional materials by students who ware active in the semester in January-June. The results indicated that the print instructional materials written by lecturers have started to consider the design principles message, but still needs to be improved. That principle has not been carried out for digital teaching materials. Improving Reading TOEFL Score through Note Taking Strategy
There are still a number of less skilled readers in higher degree education where academic texts are staple needs (Hellekjaer, 2009). This study investigated a technique to help students increase their reading ability in TOEFL reading section. A technique named Notetaking technique was implemented during two cycles of classroom action research. There were 3 meetings for each cycle. The participants were 17 Economics students who are taking TOEFL Preparation course at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Aceh, Indonesia. The result from cycle one showed no increase since the average only incline to 38.58. Then in cycle 2, there was a significant increase reaching 45.11 (which is the minimum TOEFL standard for the university). It can be deduced that this technique might not be appropriate for large classes as it demands individual assistance. Besides, a good skill of organizing information is fundamental in this strategy to maximize the students’ effort in answering the TOEFL questions during the test
Impact of Visiting the Jurnal Pendidikan IPA Indonesia Website to the Author's Knowledge
The research objective is to reveal the knowledge of people who have visited the Jurnal Pendidikan IPA Indonesia (JPII) website about articles with international standards. The instruments used were questionnaires and interviews which were conducted a feasibility test before being used. The strategy employed was sequential explanatory by collecting and analyzing quantitative data followed by qualitative data. The articles of the participants were still unassigned and submitted from July to August 2020. The number of participants was 85 consisting of 78 lecturers, 4 students, and 3 teachers. The research results from questionnaire analysis were; the participants’ intention of visiting the JPII website as 53% to cite articles, the benefit that obtained was 69% getting references, the most interesting part of 62% was the results and discussion, the substance primacy of 35% was in the discussion section, and participants find it easiest to find novelties in the discussion section of 53%. The interview results with 79 participants (93%) stated that they had gained knowledge about international standard articles that had these characteristics; interesting topics, strong gap analysis, methods that are detailed and have novelty, and discussion that has a clear novelty
The Effect of Head Managerial Leadership on Teacher’s Professionalism
This study aims to analyze, test research hypotheses, and understand the effect of principal managerial leadership and teacher work discipline on teacher professionalism. Quantitative method was used in this study using a proportional random sampling technique. The total population is 154 teachers from 14 schools. The analysis technique used is descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study show that there is a direct positive influence of principals' leadership on teacher professionalism with a correlation coefficient (r13) of 0.891 and a coefficient of determination (r13)2 of 0.7939, as well as the managerial influence of principals. leadership on teacher professionalism with a percentage of 79.39% and a path coefficient (ϸ 31) of 0.072. Second, there is a positive direct influence of teacher work discipline on teacher professionalism with a correlation coefficient (r 23) of 0.830, and a coefficient of determination (r 23) of 0.6889, and teacher work discipline on teacher professionalism with a percentage of 68.89%, and a coefficient of 68.89%. path (ϸ 32) is 0.062. Third, it was also found that the direct positive influence of principal managerial discipline on teacher work discipline with a correlation coefficient (r 12) of 0.831 and a coefficient of determination (21) of 0.6805, as well as the influence of principal managerial leadership. on teacher work discipline with a percentage of 69.05% and a path coefficient (ϸ 21) of 0.831
Classroom Assessment for EFL Learning to Speak at Junior high School
The present study investigated the current practice of EFL Classroom assessment focusing on speaking skills in Junior High School. Speaking Assessment is a tool used to evaluate students’ oral skills in the formal system by the English teachers. The investigation of classroom speaking assessment in this school was based on its effectiveness in light of alternative assessment tool and pedagogical values. By using ADDIE model, we constructed an oral assessment in accordance with the needs and levels of students as well as components on the oral assessment. There were five commons models such as Oral Interview, Role Play, Guessing Games, Story Telling and Oral Report that are communicative, relevant, continues, simple and various forms. These models can be used to assess students’ speaking skills regardless of time and place as its validity and practicality tests appeared to be high (93.75 and 87.5). It can be concluded that these assessment models are applicable for teachers to assess students’ speaking skill. The paper further elaborates discussion on the utilizing of students’ ability, progress, and their learning process. In short, it is a high time for the teachers to apply these models in the classroom
The Management of Human Resources Development in Increasing the Quality of Islamic Education Institutions
Human resources are the biggest strength in the management of Islamic educational institutions. The quality of human resources is crucial right now, because competence of human resources who have knowledge and skills will be able to cope environmental changes. Teachers and employees are the key of success in educational institutions. Good or bad performance of teachers and employees will support the competitiveness of schools. Based on this phenomenon, this research reveals the development of educators and education staff in enhancing competitiveness in the Excellent Islamic Elementary School in Bukittinggi City. This research uses descriptive qualitative. Located in Excellent Islamic Elementary School Bukittinggi City. The source of data in this study is the board of trustees, principals, teachers and employees. The techniques of data collection are participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Later on the collected data is analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and conclusion. All data are approved by validity through a credibility test, transferability test, dependability test and conformability test. The results showed that the development of teachers and employees is done through 1) on the job training, that is, development that takes place during working hours takes place both formally and informally. 2) Off the job training, that is development that has done specifically outside of work. As for the development carried out: a) training in the form of quantum teaching training, workshops for making learning media and parenting seminars, b) rotation position, c) Religious Development, d) Teacher working groups (KKG) and comparative studies. This development aims to improve the competencies of teachers and employees in the school environment so that they can improve the quality of Islamic educational institutions in accordance with the increasingly stringent times.Â
Family Education Efforts in Overcoming Juvenile Delinquency
This article discusses the education that families provide to children in overcoming various forms of delinquency carried out by juveniles in Karang Tangah village, West Sumatra. It is believed that the family is the main pillar that shapes the personality and attitude of a child. Thus, it really needs attention and primary teaching from the family so that children avoid the influence of technological advances that could have pushed every child (juveniles) involved in various forms of mischief. Along with the times and technology, without us knowing so much it is heard that children or juveniles are involved in mischief’s they are not supposed to do that will only harm themselves. Therefore, this research will describe the various forms of delinquency that juveniles do and of course, there are efforts and efforts of parents in looking after their children. It is hoped that parents can take care of and educate their children well
Education Empowerment of Madrasah at Fisherman Society in Suku Laut Kuala Tungkal Jambi
This study is aimed at revealing how is the Empowerment Education of Madrasah at Fisherman village Suku Laut Kuala Tungkal Jambi Province. Islamic schools are generally born from the initiation of society as a form of concern for the condition of the people, especially children in understanding the special religion of Islam as a matter of doubt. This research is conducted by using qualitative approach, where the stage is based on the opinion of Spradley . Data collection methods and data validity refer to Denzin and Lincoln and Guba. Result search,  Islamic schools gait has contributed greatly to this country not only in providing a religious understanding, but also in participating to educate the children of the nation through the educational process that has lasted tens or even hundreds of years. In its journey, the empowerment of Islamic schools experienced various dynamics, commitment of Islamic school leadership, public awareness and supporting efforts became the issue that made Islamic schools hard to develop as expected
Teachers’ Code Mixing and Code Switching: Insights on Language Barriers in EFL Classroom
This study aims to investigate code mixing and code switching used by English teachers in EFL classrooms. There are two major focuses in this study; the type of dominant code mixing and code switching used by the teachers. A qualitative study was used where the data were teachers’ language classroom gained by observing their classroom practices and utterances obtained through in-depth interviews. The result shows that there were three kinds of code mixing found in teachers’ and students’ utterances in EFL classroom. They were intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and pronunciation shifting. The study also found that there were four kinds of code switching found in teachers’ and students’ utterances. They were random mixing, English-Indonesian translation or vice versa, English precedes Indonesian or vice versa, and English sentences precede Indonesian sentences or vice versa. It indicated that code mixing and code switching cannot be separated in English language teaching and learning process. This study has proved that the English teachers used code mixing and code switching in teaching speaking in some types
Developing Professional Engagement through ESL Student Teachers’ Reflective Writing
The objective of this paper is to examine how ESL student teachers identify their own learning needs, analyse, evaluate and expand their professional engagement as an individual or as a community of practice (CoP) through reflective writing. In addition, the written discourses of their reflective entries are studied to illuminate the macro and micro elements of the reflective entries. This study mainly employs a qualitative study with some descriptive quantitative analysis. The participants are 27 ESL student teachers in their 6th semester. The instrument used is primarily the student teachers reflective entries and the content analysis was carried out to analyse for convergent and divergent ideas which were then generated into categories and themes based on the research questions stipulated. The findings revealed that the reflective entries have addressed some pertinent issues related to the student teachers’ learning needs and how they have extended their understanding of those issues.   The reflective entries discourses have exhibited in-depth professional thinking which served as a platform for student teachers to meta-cognitively think about teaching. This study implicates the importance of such professional learning engagement activity in order to assist student teachers to be thinking about teaching
