Practices Of Local Democracy And Power Sharing In The Indigenous Community Of Kampung Kuta

    Get PDF
This paper aims to explain local democracy in indigenous communities. To understand how local democracy is practiced in indigenous communities, it is necessary to trace how power is distributed in these communities. This study uses qualitative research methods that allow for in-depth exploration of local democracy and power distribution in the Kuta indigenous community. The practice of democracy in indigenous communities is not only present in formal mechanisms regulated by the state, but also through informal mechanisms rooted in tradition and local wisdom. In indigenous communities, regulations in various aspects of life are not only part of the functioning of formal government but also become a realm of regulation based on local customary values. Meanwhile, the democratic values of indigenous Indonesian communities generally stem from a spirit of togetherness and kinship. The tradition of deliberating to resolve issues, followed by consensus-based decision-making, is a manifestation of these values of togetherness and kinship. An important finding of this study is that the formal power structure in Kampung Kuta is divided into two structures, namely the formal structure run by the village government and the informal structure run by the customary leader, which includes the kuncen, customary elders, and village elders. The results of the study show that the practice of local democracy in Kampung Kuta can balance the division of formal and informal power, which serves to maintain community identity, strengthen social life, and ensure the sustainability of cultural values. This confirms how local democracy can adapt to traditional values

Determinants Influencing Household Waste Disposal Behavior in River Stream Areas

    Get PDF
River pollution caused by household waste remains a serious environmental issue in many urban areas. This problem not only affects aquatic ecosystems but also poses threats to public health and the quality of life of surrounding communities. The urgency of this study lies in the need to understand the social and structural factors that influence household waste disposal behavior, so that environmental policies and intervention programs can be more effective and contextually relevant. Using a quantitative approach and multiple linear regression analysis, this study found that social norms have a significant influence on waste disposal behavior, as indicated by a regression coefficient of 0.746 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This means that collective awareness and informal social control play a crucial role in shaping environmentally responsible behavior. In contrast, the use of waste disposal facilities and existing policies showed no statistically significant influence. These findings highlight that behavioral change in environmental practices cannot rely solely on infrastructure and regulation, but must be supported by the strengthening of social values and active community participation. However, this study is limited by its reliance on cross-sectional data and the exclusion of other potential determinants such as economic conditions, educational background, and cultural factors that may also influence waste disposal behavior. Future research should incorporate longitudinal designs, qualitative approaches, and a broader range of variables to capture the complexity of household decision-making processes and provide more comprehensive insights for sustainable environmental management. The growth in the number of vehicles in Yogyakarta has contributed to increased air pollution, despite a significant decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. To mitigate these environmental impacts, the government is promoting a bicycle-friendly city program, but its effectiveness still requires support in the form of adequate facilities, strong regulations, and public awareness of cycling. This study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method that combined literature review, interviews, and field observations as triangulation techniques. This approach aimed to obtain an in-depth picture of the implementation of bicycle-friendly city policies in Yogyakarta and the obstacles that arose in their implementation. The results show that the development of bicycle lanes not only supports environmentally friendly mobility but also encourages local economic growth. From an economic perspective, the existence of bicycle lanes not only facilitates environmentally friendly mobility but also encourages local economic growth through bicycle-based tourism, sporting events, and the empowerment of MSMEs.  From an environmental perspective, the construction of bicycle lanes is in line with air pollution control, noise reduction, and the development of green open spaces that continue to pay attention to ecosystem sustainability and support climate change mitigation. Meanwhile, from a social perspective, the government has implemented various educational programs and cycling campaigns from an early age to the public, which are reinforced by the development of supporting infrastructure such as special lanes, traffic signs, and bicycle parking. Overall, community involvement is an important factor in supporting this policy because its success depends not only on regulations but also on the collective awareness of citizens. This policy demonstrates the integrated efforts of the Yogyakarta City government in creating a sustainable, inclusive Cycling City that supports the welfare of the communityPertumbuhan jumlah kendaraan di Yogyakarta berkontribusi pada meningkatnya polusi udara, meskipun sempat menurun signifikan saat pandemi COVID-19.
