The Powers of Death: Recognition, Resistance, Resurrection
This essay is an invitation to examine the powers of death, particularly the modes by which such powers are manifested in the world, modes that relate to but are irreducible to an individual’s life. It considers contributions to the subject from Karl Barth, Walter Wink, and William Stringfellow, among others, to argue that while death and its associated powers are pervasive, they are also penultimate realities. The powers of death meet their end in Jesus Christ. The gospel concerning Jesus Christ is the invitation to live as if such a claim were true, to recognise one for whom death is not the foreign territory and in whom death is confronted and its powers brought to nought. It is the invitation to a life in which resistance to the powers of death is possible. It is the invitation to live a life characterised by resurrection
Acts 8: 4-25: The Amazing Magic versus The Joyful Gospel
Magic as one significant theme in the Acts of the Apostles is not yet significantly exposed. In the Greco-Roman era, magic had become a part of people’s lives from the lowest to the highest status, such as the Roman Emperor. The confrontation between magic which is likely amazing, with the joyful gospel is essential to be examined. The gospel's victory over magic is prominent for Christians and Church ministry because the power of the gospel that overcomes magic is the anchor of Christianity. This article will employ the literature research method within the qualitative research category. The most extended episode of the magical passage, Acts 8: 4-25, will be examined to figure out the distinctive feature between magic and the gospel and how the gospel overcome magic and the gospel is then widely spread throughout the region of Samaria and even to the end of the world. The literal translation and the text variant will be the first part of the examination. The following study is to demonstrate the structure. The next part is the exegesis to figure out the meaning of the text within the relevant context, including the distinction between magic and Christianity. The last part is the Implications within the contemporary era for Christians and Church ministry and conclusion
A Hermeneutical Study On The Symbolic Meaning Of The Number 144.000 In Revelation 7:1-17
This study aims to analyze and reveal the symbolic meaning of “the number those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel” in Revelation 7:1-17 and implications for the mission. The research method used is qualitative research carried out with the principles and hermeneutic methods of the Bible. The Bible’s hermeneutic method is divided into two characteristics, namely general hermeneutics and specific ones. For the general hermeneutic interpretation method, the author uses three existing analyses structural analysis, grammatical analysis and theological analysis. Then for the particular hermeneutic interpretation method, the author uses the interpretation of number symbols. The results of this study reveal that the symbolic meaning of “the number those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel” in Revelation 7:1-17 are symbolic numbers of the number redeemed by the Lamb who made it through the tribulation period by remaining faithful to the end of being followers of Christ. As for the theological implications of the text of Revelation 7:1-17 for the mission, namely, God Protects His People (7:1-3), God is Consistent with His Promise of Salvation (7:4-8), and God Grants Universal Salvation (7:9-17). As for the practical implications of the text of Revelation 7: 1-17 for the mission, namely Believers are sealed as servants of God (7:1-8), Believers glorify God (7:9-12), and Believers receive sanctification and God's providence (7:13- 17)
The Great Polarization: Understanding to the Historical Shift Away from Social Action within Evangelicalism
This paper aims to discuss the enduring shift of the evangelical church and the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church as a case study, away from active social action in the late nineteenth century and towards more hesitant involvement through the twentieth century and up to the present. Following Timothy Moberg, this paper recognizes a significant reversal of emphasis in evangelicalism during this season but argues that the root of this shift was not simply a change in focus but actually a great polarization of the ground of thought within the church. The paper involves a brief survey of some of the involved historical dynamics at play from Schleiermacher to Rauschenbusch but then concludes through a constructive comparison with the polarization of thought during the era of the Arian controversy to explore the possibility of hopeful pathways forward for the evangelical church in its dual mission to both preach God’s good news in Christ and to serve and care for the poor and vulnerable
Postcolonial Reading of the Bible: (Evangelical) Friend or Foe?
Reading the Bible through a postcolonial lens has become today’s trend in biblical hermeneutics. It triggers pros and cons within the evangelical circle. Is it friend or foe? Rather than uncritically accepting or refusing it, the article chooses a middle way, being “open but cautious” toward it. The article assumes that every reading method has its strengths and weaknesses and, thus, it can offer valuable things. Applying the content analysis theory, the author finds that a postcolonial biblical reading is somehow relevant to a contextual and transformative biblical reading, regardless of its multiple problems. It enables the readers to be self-critical, context-sensitive, and practical in faith-life integration. The article concludes that postcolonial reading of the Bible can be both (evangelical) friend and foe
The Faith of the Righteous According to Habakkuk 2:4b and Romans 1:17
Habakkuk’s prophecy that the righteous will live by his belief (Hab. 2:4a) resonates in Paul’s letters, especially the text of Roma ns 1:17. This paper describes the authentic meaning of the term ‘believe’ in Habakkuk’s prophecy. Furthermore, this accurate meaning gets a more specific articulation in Paul’s idea of faith. This paper uses the Historical-Critical method and analyzes the text of Habakkuk 2:4b and the text of Rome 1:17. The correlation between these two texts comes to formulate the faith of the righteous in Christianity, namely credibility, justice, firmness, and faithfulness in carrying out the truth based on love, credibility, justice, firmness, and loyalty to fulfil God’s will

Discourse on Alternative Contextual Evangelism Models to The Bolaang Mongondow Tribe as An Unreached People Group in North Sulawesi
This article is a historical study of alternative contextual evangelism models to Intau(means“person”)Bolaang Mongondow, which is communally called tribe or society (ethnic group/people group) Bolaang Mongondow. This study uses a literature review approach. It begins with researching the religion and beliefs of Intau Bolaang Mongondow. Then proceed with the socio-cultural phenomena of Intau Bolaang Mongondow, namely the dynamics of acculturation, openness to external influences, public attitudes towards change, and its essential element to determine alternative contextual evangelistic approaches. This study's final results show that attention to culture in developing a contextual evangelistic approach does not mean that the church must conform fully or assume harmony between the Gospel and culture. It is precisely by understanding and utilizing culture in the preaching of the contextual Gospel that it will be seen that Christian values have an advantage regarding the guarantee of eternal salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, efforts to prepare a contextual evangelist who has integrity, character, and competence regarding the Bible and culture are significant. Likewise, efforts to pioneer and develop contextual churches in the Intau Bolaang Mongondow environment must touch and empower those cultural values
The Spirit Speaks and the Wind Blows: The Primary Meaning of Πνεῦμα in John 3:8
This paper addresses the double-meaning of Spirit and wind in John 3:8 and argues that the verse should be translated in terms of the Spirit. The study begins with an analysis of the Greek text of John 3:8. It is demonstrated that even though a double-meaning is present, the more appropriate interpretation is the Spirit reading. Arguments in favor of the wind interpretation of John 3:8 are also addressed. Following this, the study surveys all usages of John 3:8 in the early church writings. It is concluded that in the writings of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, the text was interpreted with the Spirit. It is also concluded that the vast majority of Nicene and Ante-Nicene church fathers understood John 3:8 with the Spirit. Therefore, it is suggested that the recent preference of the wind meaning, which is evident in many current English translations, should be revised such that the Spirit reading becomes primary
