Well-structured electronic portfolio as a facilitator of engagement in EFL skills
Electronic portfolios have been widely accepted as the learning and assessment tool for enhancing language skills and competence in higher education. However, previous studies have not profoundly examined how e-portfolios with well-defined structure influences students engagement. More information on e-portfolios and engagement is also needed. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the well-structured e-portfolios on students engagement in learning activities as these activities consist of self-and peer-assessment. To serve this intention, an explanatory sequential mixed method with questionnaires and interviews was used to obtain data. The questionnaires and reflective notes were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the results of the interview were analyzed based on the qualitative thematic analysis technique. The findings show that there is no difference between EFL students perception and language skills. It was also indicated that self-assessment plays an essential role in engagement which informs constructs of e-portfolio. Further, a wider range of information on e-portfolio structure to deepen engagement was constructed. The conclusion profoundly informs and implicates instructional design and pedagogy in further study
Analyzing the use of illocutionary and perlocutionary acts of Dilan in an Indonesian teen novel
This study aims to analyze the speech acts based on Searles classification of illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts in the teen novel, Dilan, Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990. This research aims to identify and describe these acts as done by one of the main characters, Dilan. This research used a qualitative method. The data were in the form of a description where all of Dilans utterances are identified in the novel and further analyzed. The findings of this research showed that there are five types of illocutionary acts in the novel. They are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The assertive type is the dominant type used by Dilan rather than the other types. In terms of the perlocutionary act, the effect of Dilans utterances tends to persuade his hearers, impress, encourage, convince, amuse, intimidate, inform and surprise them. As a consequence, persuading the hearers is the dominant effect based on Dilans utterances. The context of situation determined all the acts performed by this main character. Conclusively, the findings of this study are expected to broaden the context of linguistics, especially of speech acts as a part of pragmatics in linguistics
The effect of an English TV series with a bimodal subtitle on students' vocabulary acquisition
Students of English struggle to remember large amounts of new vocabulary, which leads to a lack of vocabulary, and effective teaching methods and media affect students' knowledge of vocabulary. The current research focuses on using bimodal English-subtitled movie series to improve student vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to determine whether the vocabulary of students improved as a result of watching a seven-part English television series with English subtitle. This study employed quantitative approach, and thirty undergraduate students majoring in EFL were chosen to take part in this study. Prior to the intervention, the students were given a test of the vocabulary that was often found in the series, and they were given the same test following the intervention. The data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and the significance level of 0.05 was used to reject the null hypothesis. The finding shows that watching an English TV series with English subtitle significantly enhanced the students vocabulary. As a result, it is recommended that learners use an English TV series with English subtitles to improve their English vocabulary

A closed-ended questionnaire was given to 30 participants as part of the quantitative data gathering process utilizing the purposive sampling technique. In the qualitative phase, researchers used content analysis as a strategy to gather information from secondary sources in search of strategies and solutions to the challenges. It also briefly examines the effects of globalization on Pakistani languages. The findings of the study revealed that there is a need to use such strategies that help overcome these challenges and help in the development of English as an international language. Future researchers can undertake a longitudinal study to investigate the language development and experiences of multilingual persons in Pakistan and they can perform a comparative examination of multilingualism in various regions of Pakistan
What Indonesian EFL Learners Perceive of Collaborative Writing: Experience in Writing Essays Online
This study examines online collaborative writing (CW) teaching techniques via asynchronous computer-mediated communication multimodality, i.e., Google Docs. This study attempts to investigate what Indonesian learners perceive concerning writing collaboratively in Google Docs during online learning. This study collected data from 20 Primary School Teacher Education (PSTE) students enrolling in an English 3 (Academic Writing) class at a private university in Indonesia. The findings showed that the participants perceived online collaborative writing as a good way to develop their writing and communication skills. It was found that feedback from peers and the teacher was considered beneficial to the learners writing development during the implementation of online collaborative writing (OCW). Even though interaction among learners can be enhanced in OCW, learners lack of participation was one of the drawbacks discovered in this study. It is hoped that this study can contribute significantly to English writing instructors considering the benefits and the drawbacks of OCW before implementing OCW in their university classrooms
Awareness, attitudes towards plagiarism, and acceptance of using Turnitin in academic writings among undergraduate students
The purpose of this study was to examine the association of awareness of plagiarism, attitudes towards plagiarism and acceptance of using Turnitin among undergraduate students in a public university. The study was conducted on 143 undergraduate students at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Negeri Sembilan campus. Data was collected using an online questionnaire in the Google Form platform. These students took the Academic Writing subject. The ordinal data were collected using the 5-point Likert Scale. By studying the normality of the data using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk statistical tests, the association between awareness of plagiarism, attitudes towards plagiarism, and acceptance of using Turnitin, can be made. The tests compared the sample's scores to a normally distributed set of scores with the same mean and standard deviation. This paper presents the major findings from non-parametric correlations (Spearmans rank-order and Kendall Tau-b) and suggests future research direction in increasing undergraduates awareness of plagiarism and awareness of using Turnitin when submitting their academic assignments. To curb plagiarism among undergraduates in an academic writing course, the authors propose a plagiarism policy within academic institutions, strict sanctions on plagiarism, and teach students how to avoid plagiarism and the use of Turnitin
