Neuro-Linguistic Programming: The Application in Offline and Online Classes
Neuro-Liguistic Programming (NLP), proposed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s, is one of the most effective and useful methodologies to help us communicate effectively in various areas of life such as corporate environment, college life, education, marketing, health, and various other areas. This method is indispensable in the teaching and learning process and can accommodate the very fast and sudden changes that occurred due to the pandemic situation. In this study, the NLP effective techniques: of creating rapport, mirroring, creating positive states and anchoring, maintaining flow, pacing and leading, perceptual positioning, and modeling good practice were used in online and offline lecturing. These techniques were applied to strengthen the three learning styles visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. The data were collected through observation and field research methods. Forty (40) students from two (2) online classes and two (2) offline classes, namely Debating on Recent Issues and Theory of Literature and Literary Criticism Class participated in this study. A survey has been given by the end of each lecture to measure the success of the NLP techniques applied by the lecturer. Results showed differences between online and offline classes. Its success decreased in online classes. Therefore, the development of material delivery techniques is needed to be more developed in online classes, especially in visual presentation models to patch up the missing kinesthetic models in online classes
Development of Short Story and Popular Text Writing Evaluation Tool Via Quizizz Application
In the pursuit of enhancing creative writing proficiency, the challenge students face in crafting short and popular stories within a contextual framework is a prevalent issue. This study addresses this concern by developing an evaluation tool utilizing the Quizizz application to assess students skills in this particular aspect of writing. Thirty-five participants from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program engaged in surveys and semi-structured interviews, revealing the effectiveness of the evaluation tool in helping students identify their potential levels. Guided by the 4D development model, the study incorporated material and evaluation expert assessments, item analysis, and user response questionnaires. Employing a rating scale and Kuder-Richardson for item analysis, the research selected 30 questions that ensured differentiation, difficulty level, validation, and reliability, with a high-reliability coefficient of 0.727. The overall assessment, considering material and evaluation experts, as well as student and lecturer responses, indicated a high level of approval for the quiz applications feasibility in evaluating learning outcomes. This research highlights the significance of innovative tools in assessing and improving creative writing skills, offering valuable insights for educators seeking effective approaches to enhance students narrative abilities within constrained contexts. It emphasizes the importance of such innovative assessment tools to empower students in writing short stories and popular texts

Conversational Implicatures of Short Story in the Newspaper
Humans communicate using language, a medium that facilitates understanding in conversations, allowing individuals to connect and share information. This form of communication has evolved over time as people have interacted and engaged with one another. Within conversations, individuals often convey their intended meaning through indirect communication, a phenomenon that is explored through the lens of pragmatic concepts. The research conducted employed descriptive qualitative methods to delve into this aspect. By utilizing Grices implicature theory (1975) and the cooperative principle as frameworks, the study focused on observing and analyzing the various types of conversational maxims and implicatures in a short story from The Jakarta Post newspaper. The findings of the study revealed that the maxim of relevance was the most prevalent, accounting for approximately 43% of the instances, followed by the maxim of quality at around 33%, the maxim of manner at 19%, and the maxim of quantity at 5%. Additionally, it was noted that particularized conversational implicatures constituted 57.5% of the total, while generalized implicatures made up the remaining 42.5%. This research serves as a valuable resource for scholars and researchers in the field of linguistics, particularly those interested in exploring Grices implicature theory and its application to conversational implicatures. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of language use and interpretation by shedding light on the nuances of communication within written discourse
The Implementation of Problem-Based Learning in ESL Course Design Subject
Low teachers English competence in designing teaching and learning process is shown at least by two phenomena: a) the implementation of book-orientation process which is very often theory-based and meaningless to the development of students English competence; b) the inability in creatively design the process to meet the students different learning needs which is recently very much promoted in Kurikulum Merdeka. Based on the two phenomena, the problem-based approach was implemented to the students who took the subject English as a Second Language Course Design (ESL-Course Design) at Universitas Negeri Medan. This article describes how the students experienced the process of designing the course by referring to two references: a) The Models introduced briefly (ADDIE and ASSURE); and b) The problems provided by the lecture. To finish the design the students were asked to work as a group. The data shows that students experienced the process of making errors in applying the case to the model. With the review from the lecturer, it shows that problem-based approach can help students get the most important principles of course design which are: a) the design should be based on the students needs; b) it should follow the logic of particular model; and c) the design can be revised if the evaluation shows unsatisfying result. It implies that problem-based learning approach in teaching the subject ESL-Course Design and a series of review given to the students work are potential to develop teachers-to-bes competence in accommodating students different needs and in freeing themselves from book-dependent teaching
