Taboo Words in Devayan, a Language in Simeulu Island, Aceh Indonesia
Get PDFThe research on taboo words in Devayan has not been conducted yet, and thus, this study investigated the taboo words in Devayan society. This research was a descriptive qualitative study. The technique used was in-depth interview by digging much information from informants about taboo words in the language. The data in this study were analyzed by using Miles and Hubermans framework (1984), namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion: drawing/verification. The results of this study were (1) taboo words related to sex, (2) taboo words related to the natural function of the human body, (3) taboo words related to the sexual activity, (4) taboo words related to misconduct, (5) taboo words related to deficiency, and (6) taboo words related to animals
Using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique to Teach Recount Text
Get PDFThe objective of the research was to find out whether the use of CIRC technique is effective to improve students reading skill at the eighth grade of MTsN Model Palopo. This research applied quasi-experimental. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of MTsN Model Palopo. The number of population was 270 students. The sample were class VIII A consisting of 30 students as experimental group and class VIII B consisting of 30 students as control group. The sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling. The instrument of the research was reading test. The writer gave pretest and posttest to the students. The result showed that the students` mean score of posttest in experimental group was 85.33 and pretest was 71.03. The mean score of posttest is higher than the mean score of pretest (85.33 71.03). While the mean score of posttest in control group was 72.46 and the mean score of pretest was 70.86. The mean score of posttest was higher than the mean score of pretest (72.44 70.86). The result of statistical analysis the experimental group for a level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 29; the probability value was smaller than 0.00 0.5 and the result of statistical analysis for the control group showed that the probability value was bigger than .074 0.05. As a result, there is a significant difference in reading achievement between the students who were taught by using CIRC technique and those who were taught by non-CIRC technique. Based on the result of this study, the writer concluded that the use of CIRC technique was effective to improve students reading skill
Students Satisfaction Level on Eenglish Day Program at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School Banda Aceh
Get PDFThe purpose of this study were to measure the level of students satisfaction on teachers supervision, assessment sessions, and the skills and learning experiences students got from English Day program at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding Banda Aceh. Besides that it also want to find out whether there is a significant different between male and female students satisfaction toward English Day program at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School Banda Aceh. The data were gathered at Darul Ulum Islamic School Banda Aceh. The respondents of this study were the third year students of Darul Ulum who are enrolled in Dayah program. There were 114 students who involve as the respondents of this research. This study found that students at Darul Ulum Islamic School were satisfied toward English Day program at their schools (Mean = 3.71, SD = 1.06). Furthermore, there was no significant different between male and female students satisfaction toward the program (p-value = 0.09 0.05). However, this research found that students at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School felt that the grammar leaning and training in English Day program still need a lot of improvement
The X Factor in Understanding Listening Comprehension Skill
Get PDFThis research was aimed to find out factors affecting students challenges in listening comprehension as perceived by students at SMAN 1 Calang. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The samples of this research were selected by using purposive sampling. There were 75 eleventh-grade students who participated in this research. Questionnaire and interview were designed as research instruments. The questionnaire consisted of 30 items grouped into five categories, namely students listening comprehension challenges related to factors attributed to the content and linguistics features of the listening text, factors attributed to the speaker, factors attributed to the listener, and factors attributed to the physical setting. Moreover, the interview consisted of three questions asking students opinion about listening comprehension, challenges they faced in listening comprehension activity, and factors that caused those challenges. The result indicates listening texts, speaker, listener, and physical setting were the main sources of students listening comprehension challenges. The dominant factor affecting students challenges in listening comprehension was the physical setting such as the noise from environmental surroundings, with the percentage of 89.6%
The Use of Peer Assessment in Speaking Skill
Get PDFThis study describes peer assessment implemention in teaching speaking skill in Senior High School of Methodist Banda Aceh. The study was categorized as descriptive study in which the researcher served as an active observer. The research participants in this research were the first-year students and a teacher who applied peer assessment technique in the senior high school of Methodist Banda Aceh.The researcher applied a subsequent process method by observing the classroom using observation sheet, and taking field notes to see the process of implementation of peer assessment. In analyzing the data, the researcher used data reduction, data display, and verification. The implementation process of peer assessment was shown by the classroom observation in three steps; pre-implementation of peer assessment, during peer assessment, and post peer assessment. The researcher also found that the succesfull implementation of peer assessment was because of the teachers emphasis on giving score to the peers and raising the students motivation to conduct peer assessment, making them confident to perform the peer assessment process
Slang Analysis in Film "Fury"
No full textThe aims of this research are to identify the functions, types and the formation of slang words/phrases in the film Fury. This research is qualitative research with content analysis design. The data are slang words/phrases from the conversations of the film. The data were collected through observation with observation guide as the instrument. The result of the research shows that the functions of using slang in the film were to show emotion, rebellion, humor, toughness, creative, vibrant, informality, stylization, conciseness, and forcefulness. The types of slang used in the film were hip-hop slang, slang in University of Leicester, inner city slang of New York, general slang, and specific slang. The slang words/phrases in the film were formed by suffixation, final combining, reversed form, compounding, clipping, and word manufacture
