    Surveying Metacognitive Reading Strategies Awareness of Fifth-Semester English Department Students

    This article serves result on the survey for metacognitive awareness level of reading strategies use in academic reading by English department students of Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah), Banda Aceh. The research measured their the respondents use and preferences of strategies in academic reading by using the inventory designed by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002) called SORS (Survey of Reading Strategies). A total of 46 fifth semester students of Unsyiah English Department became the respondents. Analysis from the data collection showed that the respondents possessed a medium level overall tendency of metacogntive reading strategy awareness. Meanwhile strategies such as getting back concentration and re-reading when text is difficult achieved high use frequencies.The result revealed that the problem-solving reading strategies was the most preferred subscales among the other two subscales, indicating the respondents preference to use during-reading strategies

    Hints to Mayor Election: Genre Analysis of the Political Advertisement On Aminullah Zainal Posters in Aceh

    Political advertisement sub-genre of promotional advertisement, takes an important role in the election, particularly Mayor Election. Hence, this study made an effort on analyzing the element of this genre. The four posters from Aminullah Zainal were the samples analyzed in this study. Likewise, the data were elaborated descriptively through genre analysis. Furthermore, Barrons framework (2012) was employed as an instrument to collect the data about rhetorical patterns (RP). The result of this study revealed that all of the political posters followed the rhetorical pattern of Barron framework. In addition, the seven moves suggested by Barron are the obligatory features of Aminullah Zainal posters

    Kun Fa Ya Kun! Religious Values in Haba Putroe Kaoy

    It is always interesting to talk about folklore since it can entertain the people and gives moral values. In Aceh, folklore, which is known as Haba, has special position in the community. It contains moral values that can be used as an example in human life. The purpose of this study was to describe the religious values in Acehnese folklore, Haba Putroe Kaoy. The document used in the research was Haba Putroe Kaoy text rewritten by Herman RN. This is qualitative study with a content analysis research model. In this study, the Haba Putroe Kaoy was analyzed based on Islamic religious values. Based on the analysis, the researcher found that Haba Putroe Kaoy contains seven religious values, namely; doing worship, praying to God, giving alms, helping others, believing in Gods power, believing and accepting destiny, and obeying parents advices. In conclusion, Haba Putroe Kaoy contains religious values which can be used as character education for the listener

    The Influence of Student Team-achievement Division (STAD) in Developing Students Speaking Skill

    The research was implemented to find out the effectiveness of students team achievement division (STAD) as a part of cooperative learning in teaching speaking to improve the students speaking skill and also to know the students responses toward the implementation of STAD in teaching speaking at XI IA 2 class of SMAN 1 Lhoong, Aceh Besar. The population of the study was the eleventh graders of SMAN 01 Lhoong, Aceh Besar. The number of the samples was 40 students consisting of 20 students from the class XI IA 2 as the experimental group, and 20 students chosen from the class XI IS 2 as the control group. The data of this research were collected by giving tests; (pretest, posttest), and questionnaire. The data collections were analyzed by using SPSS 17. The percentage formula was used to analyze the students perceptions toward the implementation of STAD in the experimental group. The result shows that the mean score of experimental group was 70.95. Meanwhile the control group was 68.70. Moreover, the significant value of both the experimental and control groups in the post-test was 0.04 which is lower than =0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected and it can be concluded that the use of STAD in teaching speaking skill enhanced the students speaking skill, compared to the teaching speaking in conventional method. Meanwhile, the result of questionnaires shows that STAD could enhance the students confidence in learning speaking skill

    Students Perceptions toward Teachers Teaching Strategies, Personal Competence, and School Facilities

    This study was aimed to find out alumnis perceptions toward English teachers teaching strategies and personal competences. In addition, this research investigated how students perceived availabilty of their school facility. The study was conducted online by sending the link of questionnaire to alumni who graduted from three state senior high schools in South Aceh. The study used the quantitative method with the survey design, and the questionnaire was used as the instrument to get the data needed. The population of this survey was all students who graduated from SMAN 1 Labuhanhaji, SMAN 1 Tapak Tuan, and SMAN 1 Trumon and they are now continuing their study at some universities and academies in Aceh and North Sumatera. The samples for this study were fifteen alumni chosen from each of these three state schools. The collected data was analyzed through a quantitative procedure by using a statistical formula to find the percentage of each statement. The results showed that most English teachers were perceived not to thoroughly apply the strategies suggested in English teaching but have a complete set of required personality to be a good teacher. In addition, school facilities were perceived still insufficient

    An Analysis of Associative Meanings in Two Songs Albums of Lorde

    This research is analyzing associative meanings in Lordes selected songs lyric. The aimed of this study is to find out the types and the functions of associative meanings in Lordes selected songs lyric. This research used descriptive qualitative research approach and a major theory of associative meaning from Leechs (1985) theory. In this research, the researcher gathered the data by collecting, marking and describing words, phrases, and sentences in the songs lyric from two albums that contained associative meaning such as connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and collocative meaning. Then, the researcher analyzed the data by classifying words, phrases, and sentences that contained types and function of associative meanings which referred to Leechs (1985) theory, then explained the finding, and the last formulated research conclusion based on data finding and analysis. The result of this research showed that there were sixty-nine data of associative meaning as well as their functions in ten songs lyric of Lorde. There were seven data of connotative meaning, thirty-five data of social meanings, eleven data of affective meaning, eleven data of reflected meaning, and five data of collocative meanings. The dominant type of associative meaning that used in Lordes songs lyric is social meaning in which the lyrics used informal languages such as idioms, slangs, and colloquials

    QAR Strategy for Effective Teaching of Reading Comprehension

    The objective of study was to investigate the effect of implementation of Question Aswer Relationship(QAR) strategy on teaching reading comprehension at the third year students of MTsN 7 Aceh Besar.This study employed true experimental in which there were two classes taken as the sample, namely a control group which consisted of 21 students and an experimental group that consisted of 23 students. They were taken through random sampling tehnique. In addition, the data were collected through quantitative (pre-test and post-test) and qualitative method (questionaire). The result shows that the mean of the post-test score of the experimental group was 73.69, while the mean of the post-test scores of control group is 65.64. By comparing t-test score with t-table score, it shows that the result of t-test was 3.08, while the result of t-table at a level of significance with = 0,05 was 2,021. It means that t-test score is higher than t-table score.The results indicate that alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Moreover, the students responses toward the use of QAR strategy in learning reading comprehension were quite positive(80.9%). Finally, it can be inferred that QAR strategy is an effective strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the third year students of MTsN 7 Aceh Besar

    Taboo Language on Physical and Mental Limitations in the Pidie Raya Community

    The purpose of this study is to describe types of taboo language with regard to physical and mental limitations in the Pidie Raya community, which includes Pidie Regency and Pidie Jaya Regency. This field research with a qualitative approach used a descriptive-analytical method. The data of this research were taboo languages in a spoken form related to physical and mental limitations in the Pidie Raya community. The data were obtained from 16 informants who settled in eight villages within the sub-districts of Muara Tiga, Padang Tiji, Trienggadeng and Meureudu, in the regency of Pidie and Pidie Jaya. The data were collected using structured interview techniques supported by inducement techniques. The data were analyzed qualitatively through several stages (a) selecting data, (b) describing the whole data, (c) grouping data based on their types, and (d) analyzing data followed by drawing conclusions. The results showed that the taboo languages related to physical limitation include a) inherited physical deficiencies/abnormalities, and (b) physical limitations due to illness. While taboo languages related to mental limitation includes (a) mental disorders, (b) weak-minded, and (c) psychological disorders. Some taboo words about one's physical and mental limitations in the Pidie Raya community can be expressed in the form of refinement or euphemism. This is intended to prevent social inequalities among the members of the community

    Using Herringbone Graphic Organizer Strategy to Enhance Students Reading Comprehension

    This research aims at investigating the use of Herringbone Graphic Organizer Strategy (HGO) to enhance students reading comprehension and their responses toward the application of HGO. The true experimental design was used in this research in which the population involved four classes at Private Senior High School of SukmaBangsaLhokseumawe, consisting of 86 first grade students, while two classes were selected by using cluster random sampling as samples, namely X/Volcano as an experimental class, consisting of 18 students and X/Hargowilis as a control class, consisting of 20 students. The experimental class was taught by using HGO, whereas the control class was taught by using conventional strategy. The instruments used for data collection were tests and questionnaires. The tests were given for both the experimental and control class but the questionnaire was only distributed for experimental class students. The data obtained from the tests were analyzed by using the SPSS (statistical package for the social science) version 23 and the questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. The analyses results indicated that HGO is able to enhance students' reading comprehension proven by the significance value of the t-test on the identifying main idea (p = 0.003), specific detail (0,001), and inference aspect (0.001). Therefore, since the probability is Sig. 0.05, then H0 is rejected. In addition, the students responded positively (79.16%) to the application of HGO. It can be concluded that HGO could enhance reading comprehension and develop the positive responses of the students
