    English teachers perceptions and constraint on the use of authentic assessment in teaching English

    This study aims to determine teacher perceptions of authentic assessment, and to find out the teacher's problems in implementing authentic assessment and solutions that can be done by English teachers in overcoming problems in implementing authentic assessment. In data collection, researchers used questionnaires, interviews and documentation to junior high school teachers in Banda Aceh, then analyzed the data using descriptive-quantitative analysis techniques. The results showed that the English teacher's perceptions of authentic assessment were in the medium category, starting from the teacher's absorption of authentic assessment information, understanding and assessing the authentic assessment of the 2013 Curriculum. learning so there is not enough time; teachers still do not understand the preparation of authentic assessment instruments and rubrics. Teachers still have difficulty sorting between the three aspects to be assessed, namely aspects of attitude, knowledge and skills; The teacher feels overwhelmed because if there are many students, a lot of time and money will be needed to implement authentic assessments; The teacher finds it difficult because they have to add up each score obtained by the students as a whole and then describe the value obtained. Finally, the teacher's efforts to overcome this difficulty by participating in peer discussion training between teachers, especially English teachers, as well as attending training and assistance by the Government or the Ministry of Education and higher education institutions

    Teacher talk of praises in English classroom interaction

    This study was conducted at International Elementary School of Bunga Matahari to find out the type of teacher talk in English classroom interactions and the students responses on teacher talk of praises. The descriptive qualitative design was applied and aimed to analyze the types of talk employed by the teacher in the classroom interaction based on FIACSystem presented byFlanders(1970). The data were analyzed using an interaction model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2013) et al. and focused on the teacher and student talk in ICP class. This research employed observation through video recording in order to reach the objectives of this study. The participant in this study were 45 students with 15 students in each class and 3 English teachers. The results showed that by analyzing responses of transcription from the observation, the teacher talk of giving praises is approximately less, giving direction dominates the teacher talk category that consists of direct influence of teacher talk. In addition, the students response was dominantly toward teacher talk of praises

    A study of code-switching and code-mixing used on YouTube channel: A comparison of Indonesian YouTubers

    YouTube is one of the biggest platforms where people around the world can share informative videos. In YouTube, we can find the code-switching and code-mixing phenomenon easily. There are two dominant types of code-switching and code-mixing. The first type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 1: Indonesian YouTubers who live abroad, while the second type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 2: Indonesian YouTubers who live in the country. This study aimed to find out which group switched and mixed language the most. The transcripts of the chosen YouTube video were the collected data. The qualitative method was used in this study, and the data were analyzed using document analysis based on the framework of Myers-Scotton (1993) and Muysken (2000). The result showed that Group 1 used code-switching and code-mixing the most, with a total of 288 pieces of data. Group 2 used code-switching and code-mixing with a total of 262 pieces of data. The most dominant type of code-switching used by both groups was intra-sentential, a total of 154 pieces of data. The less dominant type of code-mixing used was insertion, a total of 253 pieces of data

    The use of English Conversation Journal (ECJ) to improve students speaking performance in business English communication

    This experimental research was intended to make an analysis and assessment toward the use of English Conversation Journal (ECJ) whether it is effective to improve students speaking performance in Business English Communication or not. The objectives of this study were to find out whether there are any significant differences between students who are taught by using ECJ and without ECJ in terms of students speaking performance in Business English Communication. The Researcher employed quantitative research with two groups consisting of pre-test and post-test groups through random sampling where Office Management students (OM-35) as control class and (OM-36) as experimental class. The result revealed that the mean difference is 11.75. It showed that the average result of students deviation score in Control and Experiment groups was 69.50-81.25=-11.75. In other words, there are significant differences in students Speaking Performance in Business English Communication between those who were taught by using English Conversation Journal (ECJ) and those who were not. Therefore, improving students speaking performance in Business English Communication by using English Conversation Journal (ECJ) can be an alternative in teaching and learning process

    THE INVESTIGATION OF REFUSAL STRATEGIES USED BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

    The aim of this research is to investigate the refusal strategy used by Acehnese EFL university students and how the interlocutors power status affects on it. The sample of this study were 25 students at fifth-semester of English language department of Syiah Kuala University. In collecting the data, this study used a discourse completion test consisting of 10 situations, and semantic formula were analyzed and categorized according to the Beebe, Takahashi and Uliss-Weltz (1990). The results show that the students used different manners in presenting the refusal strategies. In refusing the intelocutors, they tended to choose an indirect strategy by stating regret or saying 'sorry', and excuses or explanations, while the direct and adjunct strategies were the least to be used. Moreover, this study has also been shown that the interlocutor's status became a significant role in the number of strategies used for refusing. The higher the status of our interlocutor was, the more polite the use of refusal strategies the participants employed. Additional analysis revealed that the students culture greatly influences the presenting of their strategy in refusing. The study's results are expected to pave future research concerning English foreign language learners' refusal strategies

    USING THINK-TALK-WRITE STRATEGY IN TEACHING WRITING AN ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT

    This research was conducted to know the effect of Think-Talk-Write strategy on the students writing analytical exposition improvement and to know the students responses toward the use of this strategy in teaching writing an analytical exposition text. This is a quasi-experimental research in which the samples were taken from two classes, experimental class (XI-IPA F) which consisted of 34 students and control class (XI-IPA G) which consisted of 36 students. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post-test. The result showed that the mean scores of pre-test in the experimental class was 61.47, while the mean score of post-test in the experimental class was 76.67. Moreover, both scores were analyzed by comparing the z-z-score of pre-test and post-test in the experimental class. The result of the z-test was -11.09 at the level significance 5% with assumption if the z-score is beyond -1.96 and 1.96, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire showed that the students gave positive responses toward the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy on teaching writing analytical exposition text where 57% of students strongly agreed and 40% of students agreed with the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy could improve the students ability to write an analytical exposition text

    A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PROBLEM SOLVING METHOD AND LANGUAGE GAME IN TEACHING SPEAKING

    This research aimed to find whether or not there was any significant difference in the speaking achievement of students taught by using language games, compared to those taught by using a problem solving method. This research applied a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 50 students who belong to two groups. The technique of taking sampling was systematic random sampling. The instrument of the research was a structured interview. SPSS 22.0 was used to analyze the data. The researcher found that there was any significant difference in the speaking achievement of the students taught by using language games, compared to those taught by using a problem solving method. In other words, language game was more effective than problem solving method to improve the speaking skill of the fourth semester students of English Study Program at State Islamic Institute of Palopo. The mean score in the language game group was higher than the mean score in the problem solving method group (69.9 43.2). The difference of those mean scores was statistically significant; it is based on t-test value at a significant level 0.05, the probability value was lower than the significant level (0.00 0.05)

    DYSPHEMISM USED IN PROHABA NEWSPAPER

    The unique use of language plays an important role in media, especially for the journalist business like newspapers. As a strategy to develop journalistic business, many mass media work hard to attract the reader's attention, such as the use of language style of dysphemism. This research aimed at finding out the types of dysphemism and its function contained in Prohaba Newspaper, a daily newspaper published in Banda Aceh. In this qualitative research, the data were obtained from the newspaper published in June-December Edition 2018. The data were analyzed and categorized based on the types of dysphemism proposed by Warren (1992) and its functions by Allan and Burridge (2006). It was found that Prohaba contains the five types of dysphemism with their own functions. Out of 26 dysphemism, the most dominant dysphemism type, 14 cases, that was found in this research was dysphemism with the function to insult. Term of insult or disrespect type was found in three pieces of news which compared people to animals. Furthermore, taboo terms were used in other three pieces of news, and the last three of news used euphemistic dysphemism type

    LEXICAL BUNDLES IN STUDENTS ESSAY WRITING

    This study was aimed to find out the frequency of three- word and four- word of lexical bundles which were used in the essay writing of the undergraduate students studying at English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University. This study employed a corpus based analysis which compiled a specialized small corpus consisting of 161 students essays under linguistic topic. In order to generate the frequent list of sequences, computational software named AntConc 3.5.8 by Laurent Anthony was used. The results showed that the number of three-word bundles was higher than four-word bundles in terms of the frequency of co-occurrence in which the most common expression the function of as three-word bundles and the advantages of being as four-word bundles were found
