    Using Somatic, Auditory, Visual, and Intellectual (SAVI) technique to improve students speaking

    The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the effect of using Somatic, Auditory, Visual, and Intellectual (SAVI) technique on students speaking at SMAN Model 12 Banda Aceh. Furthermore, it is also to investigate the students responses toward the implementation of SAVI technique in teaching speaking at SMAN Model 12 Banda Aceh. Two classes (respectively 33 students) are chosen as the sample. The students in experimental class were taught by using SAVI technique and the students in control class were taught without using SAVI technique. The data about the students ability were collected through giving test. Meanwhile, the students responses toward teaching speaking by using SAVI were collected by giving questionnaires. The data from test were analyzed by using SPSS version 23. Meanwhile the data from questionnaires were analyzed by using percentage formula suggested by Sugiyono (2015). The finding showed that using teaching speaking by using SAVI technique significantly improved students speaking ability, especially their speaking sub-skills. The study proved the improvement by the result of z-test in which the z-score for post-test result of experimental and control class is 3.73. It was found against the hypothesis that there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between the students who were taught by using SAVI technique and those who were taught without using SAVI technique at second year students of SMA 12 Banda Aceh

    High and low achievers dominant learning style preferences in learning English

    This study aims at finding the high and low achievers learning style preferences and the teachers understanding about the students learning style preferences in learning English at MAN 1 Banda Aceh. The survey of this study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A questionnaire was used to explore the students learning style preferences, while an interview was used to get specific information about the teachers opinions on students learning style preferences in learning English. Willing (1988) category of learning style that consists of communicative, concrete, authority-oriented and analytical learning styles were used. The result of the questionnaire showed that the high achievers dominant learning style was the communicative one with a mean value of 3.12 and a standard deviation of 0.65. At the same time, the low achievers also favoured communicative learning style with a mean value of 3.11 and a standard deviation of 0.63. While the interview shows that the teachers were aware and understood well about students learning style preferences in learning English. In conclusion, by understanding their characteristics in absorbing information, the students can develop the skills in various ways to make it easier, faster and more successful for them in their learning

    An analysis of Acehnese archaic words among North Acehnese speakers

    This study concerned about the Acehnese archaic words in Lhokseumawe. The aims were to find out the archaic words, their replacements and their extinction factors. The researcher used qualitative descriptive methods and analyzed using three interactive models; data reduction, data display and verification. The result of this study showed that they are sixty Acehnese words given by informants; 32 words referred to archaism and 25 words referred to semi-archaism, and 3 words referred to non-archaism. 12 of 32 archaic words were replaced and 20 others were not. This condition was caused by the word-borrowing factors from second and foreign languages and also the lifestyle. Therefore, we need to teach Acehnese language to the future generation and introduce the Acehnese archaic words to especially the Acehnese in Lhokseumawe by studying and documenting the language and the archaic words as the language is a part of local cultures

    The analysis of best-seller fantasy novel covers in 2019 through multimodal lens

    The purpose of this research was to analyze ten covers of 2019 best-seller fantasy novels through multimodal.The research method used was qualitative research. The objects in this research were ten book covers of 2019 best-seller fantasy novels. The instruments used were documentation that aimed at obtaining data, including relevant books, study, activity reporting, relevant research data. Content analysis was used to obtain the data. This study used five phased cycles in analyzing the data; compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The result of analyzing the novels is emphasized in two focuses, including representation and interactive function. Several novels have a narrative aspect, while others contain conceptual interpretation, which is part of a representative function. It was very challenging to interpret some implicit meaning of the symbols in some of the novels as it requires mythical knowledge. Therefore, it is expected that understanding the implicit meaning comprehensively will make readers easier to understand the story outline of the novel

    A survey of students English proficiency and their needs toward learning outcomes at vocational colleges

    This research was conducted to investigate students English proficiency and their needs toward English learning outcomes. This research was based on a qualitative research design. The data were collected from 80 students who received an English proficiency test and eight students who participated in an interview session. The interview dealt with their needs and problems in communication skills in English. The result shows that there was no student who got excellent English proficiency level, eight students (10%) reached good category, 46 students (58%) achieved satisfactory category, 21 students (26%) were in poor category, and five students (6%) were in very poor category. In addition, all students need English for communication in their future profession. Finally, the results of the interview also show that industrial engineering students preparing to work in manufacturing various marble products face a serious problem in marketing their products to the consumers. In addition, the students majoring in tourism destination area considered that they have to communicate in English to support their job in providing services to tourists speaking different languages. Therefore, it can be concluded that vocational school students need transactional English in a specific field because they are being prepared to work in enterprises or to be entrepreneurs

    An investigation of the school literacy programs at State Senior High School 4 in Banda Aceh

    This research aims to investigate a literacy program at a senior high school level. The researcher obtained the data for this research from Senior High School 4 in Banda Aceh because it has a better English teaching and learning process, and the school implemented a specific literacy program. The participantsinvolved in this research include the school principal, vice school principals, the head of the school library, teachers, and 20 students from science and social science classes. The data in this research was collected using an observation sheet and interview guide to evaluate the literacy program based on the CIPP framework. The research results show that the literacy program at the school includes learning strategies provided by the teacher, the availability of facilities, and student reading interest. Based on the interview results, students were not motivated to participate in the school literacy program. Therefore, it is suggested that specific policy needs to be made and reinforced in order to implement a literacy program at senior high schools

    Language learning strategies employed by higher and lower achieving students in learning speaking

    The objectives of this research were to find out the types of language learning strategies employed by higher and lower achieving students on speaking skill and to find out the impacts of language learning strategies employed by them. A questionnaire was used as the instrument of this study. The sample of this research were 82 students who were chosen based on the criteria: (1) the students already passed all the Speaking I to IV classes, (2) the students consist of higher achieving students (score B) and lower achieving students (score C), and (3) the students allowed the researcher to obtain their speaking scores. Thus, purposive sampling was used here. In this research, the researcher used Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (2003) to determine the students language learning strategy. The result revealed that the higher achieving students used memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies in learning speaking. On the other hand, the lower achieving students generally did not use the learning strategies in their learning activities. Therefore, as the impact of this learning habit, they do not possess a good speaking ability and achieve low scores in speaking class

    An investigation of media Ruangguru as educational online platform in studying English

    Ruangguru is one of the educational online platforms that has existed in Indonesia since 2014. The application which focused on education-based services became the new phenomenon of online learning that attracted students attention, especially in this 4.0 era. Thus, the main objective of this research was to investigate the use of the medium Ruangguru as an educational online platform and the student's perspective on the use of Ruangguru in learning English. The sample of the study was 10 students in the ninth grade at SMP IT Nurul Ishlah Banda Aceh. The data were collected and analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative design. The results showed that the students felt convenient in using Ruangguru, for the reason that it could be accessed through mobile phone anytime and anywhere. Based on the students perspective, Ruangguru was quite interesting and it could attract students attention in learning English for the reason that it provided visual animation which made the learning atmosphere became fun. The results of the study were expected to become a reference for school practitioners, parents, students, and general readers to find the learning aids that are compatible with the sophistication of technology and information update in learning English

    Edna Pontellier's endeavors as the main character in Kate Chopins "The Awakening" in the nineteenth-century liberal feminism

    This study analyzed the struggle of Edna Pontellier in the 19th-century liberal feminism in the novel entitledThe Awakening writtenby Kate Chopin. Liberal feminism assumes that the main problem of gender inequality is the domination of institutions by men. Men control the economic sphere, political sphere, along with other things. 19th-century liberal feminism put its focus on women's equal liberty. In general, the novel is about Edna Pontellier, the woman who was trapped in the figure of a mother and wife. She struggled as a woman in the 19th-century to get equal liberty and follow her desires. The researcher used the qualitative method in analyzing the struggle of Edna Pontellier. The results of this study show Ednas struggles to pursue her desires through Mill and Taylors 19th-century liberal feminism theory. She wanted to get the same political rights, economic opportunities, and education that men get. The results also showed the two things that lead Edna to become a figure of liberal feminism: an unhappy married life and her desire to free herself
