    A review of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy in teaching reading comprehension

    The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique enhances students' reading comprehension. The data used in this study were gathered using a library research methodology. Some of the literature sources used in this study included books and journals. The steps involved in the data analysis technique are data identification from pertinent literature sources, location identification, data acquisition, data evaluation, and data incorporation into the research presentation. The findings of this study demonstrate that students' reading comprehension abilities increased after receiving treatment with the DRTA technique employing its three fundamental steps (Predicting, Reading, and Proving). The students' test results supported the findings, and the application of the DRTA technique can assist pupils in resolving their reading difficulties. In conclusion, the DRTA approach is regarded as a successful teaching method that helps raise students' reading comprehension abilities

    Teaching Vocabulary through Round Robin brainstorming technique

    The researcher focused on improving vocabulary achievement through the Round Robin Brainstorming technique at the seventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Luwu Utara. The aim of the research was to find out whether or not the use of the Round Robin Brainstorming technique improves the vocabulary achievement of the students effectively. Pre-experimental research was used by the researcher. The population was the tenth-graders of SMA Negeri 5 Luwu Utara. The population amounted to 132 students. The Class X Ipa 1 sample consisted of 21 students. A vocabulary test was the resource of the research. The researcher gave the students a pre-test and a post-test. The data analyzed by using SPSS 22. The finding of this research shows that the use of the round-robin brainstorming technique effectively improves the students' vocabulary achievement. The students' result means score in the pre-test was lower than the mean score in the post-test (52.86 60.24). The researcher found that p-value (0.02) was lower than the alpha (0.05).     The use of paired reading method to teach reading skill for the eight grade students of Islamic boarding school

    This quasi-experimental research aimed at identifying the effect of paired reading method on the reading skill achievement of the eighth-grade students in the Islamic boarding school of Nurut Tauhid 2020/2021. To collect the data, 12 students were chosen as the subjects of purposive sampling. They were given a pre-test, treatments for 12 times by using paired reading method, and a post-test. The result of this study shows that paired reading method has a positive effect on the reading skill of the students at the Islamic boarding school of Nurut Tauhid. The researcher suggests that using a paired reading method can be an alternative way to improve their reading skills gradually. This research hopefully would become a consideration for a language teacher in the current context to implement paired reading in teaching reading in their classroom teaching

    Undergraduate students perception of online learning in English speaking class

    Student perceptionoffers numerous information about students experiences in online courses, provides lecturers with valuable feedback, indicates how much students learn, and shows the quality of the teaching and learning process.The current study is aimed tofind out the students perception of speaking class conducted online in terms of usefulness, effectiveness, and intentions. The questionnaires employed in this quantitative study were the students perceptions of the online speaking course, which were completed by 112 undergraduate EFL students.The descriptive statistics consisted of five number summary were used to analyze the data. The findings showed that thestudents had different perceptions about online learning for a speaking class. The students perceptions of the online speaking class are mostly positive in the terms of usefulness and effectiveness. However, most of the students did not have positive intention to enroll in online speaking class in the future. Therefore, lecturers are suggested to use interactive methods in delivering the learning material with the use of video conferences such as Zoom and Google Meet

    Competitive storytelling: What do teachers do in assisting students to win the contest?

    This study was aimed to investigate the teachers strategy used by the teachers in assisting their students to win story telling contests. The study employed the qualitative approach with multiple case study as the design. The teachers from five schools considered as the role model based on the number of their students achievement in storytelling contest were interviewed. The data were then analyzed by data condensation, data display and conclusion (Miles, Huberman, Saldana, 2018). The conclusion of the study illustrated that the preparation process conducted by those teachers were motivation through emphasizing the benefit of joining the storytelling contest, providing a role model of a successful storyteller, enabling the parents approach to strengthen the benefit of storytelling to the students, avoiding a winning oriented competition that put more burden to their shoulders, and facilitating internal competitions. Moreover, the result found that the coaching strategy used by the teachers were adjusting duration, reading the story, modelling, observing, and giving feedback. Lastly, the sources of storytelling model that the teachers used were also available

    Teachers perceptions of English language teaching process via online learning during Covid-19

    During theCovid-19 pandemic, many teachers and students were doing the teaching and learning processfromhome. Theyexperienced many problems during the remote instruction. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to investigate the teachers' perceptionsandobstacles in the process of teaching and learning English by using online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research was mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The instrumentsused were a set of questionnaire and interview.The data collected from the questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistic. In addition, the interview result was analyzed qualitatively to describe the obstacles.The resultin the questionnaireindicated that most of the teachers were against the implementation of online learning, i.e. 55.45% and44.54% teachers were in favor of this method of instruction. The problems can be categorized into technical and situational problems. These problemscan be resolveddepending on teachers' teaching experience, condition, and situation. Teachers can give the learning module to the students, andthe teachers must be creative in delivering the teaching material. In addition, parents' supportis very crucial for maintainingstudents motivation, enthusiasm, and expression during online learning

    Register analysis of language use in the Jakarta Posts football news

    This research investigated the types of linguistic forms of English register and the meaning of register used in The Jakarta Post Football news. The linguistic forms that are investigated are specifically in content words and noun phrases. To obtain the data, documentation was used as the instrument. The data were analyzed using the model proposed by Elo and Kyangas (2007), it was found that there are two kinds of data in the form of content words, eight data of nouns, two verbs. In the form of the noun phrase, the researcher found two data in the category of attributive adjective and seven data of nouns in noun phrases. All of English registers found in The Jakarta Posts football news have different meanings when compared with their conceptual meaning in the dictionary. The most dominant type of change in meaning is social meaning

    Teachers implementation of scientific approach in teaching English for Senior high school students

    The scientific approach constitutes an approach to Indonesia's 2013 curriculum. Since it is imperative for Indonesian education, all teachers need to understand, manage, and apply it in the teaching-learning process. Unfortunately, many English teachers still use inappropriate methods as in the 2013 curriculum. This qualitative research aims at discovering the implementation of a scientific approach by English teachers at State Senior High School in Lhokseumawe. The objects were English teachers at SMAN 1 Lhokseumawe, SMAN 2 Lhokseumawe, and SMAN 5 Lhokseumawe. The tools used in this study were observation for three high school English teachers in the schools. The observation results toward the implementation of five scientific approach stages exposed that the English teachers did not carry out the five stages completely. The teacher should master, understand, and apply the teaching process by following the whole stages of the scientific approach. Class mastery and time management are vital for the learning process. Thus, the teachers should consider those points. Hence, interesting supporting media, appropriate learning material, and methods must be considered by the teachers in teaching so that the students will be motivated to learn
