    Problems in teaching and learning English online during the Covid-19 pandemic

    The coronaviruses (Covid-19) pandemic has spread rapidly worldwide, including the education sector. The policy toward the study from home during the Covid-19 outbreak caused a new problem in the teaching and learning system. The objectives of the research were to find out and describe the problem faced by the teachers in conducting online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a qualitative method approach. The research subjects are three English teachers. The data was gathered through observation and interviews from three English teachers at SMA Negeri 4 Banda Aceh. Some of the problems emerged during online learning, nine problems. The arisen of teaching problems were: internet access, disability in accessing technology, difficulty in explaining the materials, flexibility in controlling and managing students' activities, indiscipline, time-consuming, lack students' motivation, students absent in online class, and the last parents support system. The findings showed that there are two solutions to overcome the problems by teachers, namely, applying online chat of WhatsApp and keeping the interaction with the students' parents to support the student activities and explain the lesson plans while online learning teaching and learning process

    The frequency of the rhetorical pattern of undergraduate thesis background section in English education departments of two universities in Aceh

    This research examined the rhetorical pattern of thesis background, particularly the undergraduate scripts of English education department students. The study aims to find outthe frequencyoftherhetorical patternsin writing thesis background.The approach used in this study is a qualitative method based on content analysis. The sample consisted of 20 English education undergraduate theses from two universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed based on Kanoksilapatham (2005) classification by following the framework of Swaless CARS model (2004). The results show that the undergraduatestudents of English departments have a similarfrequency of the rhetorical pattern with the framework guidance. Although some students have reached an adequate standard in writing research background using their own way, they also should improve the language style in academic writing

    Pre-service teachers' perception of their competence and their readiness for teaching profession

    The Indonesian Government takes serious measure on the future prospect of the teacher education graduates who are considered not to have a standardized competence ability to become a professional teacher. It inflicted some responses that opposed with the implementation of the program. This issue highlights the need for a more thorough investigation on the legitimacy of new teachers in Indonesia, as well as their quality. The goal of this study is to learn about pre-service teachers perceptions of their own competency and readiness to teach. This quantitative study used internet-based questionnaires to collect the data. The participants were 67 undergraduate students of university in Lamongan, East Java Province. The result of this research showed that p value (.258) is higher () than value (.05). It means that there were no correlation between pre-service teachers perception of their competence and their readiness for teaching profession. Nevertheless, the pre-service teachers have a positive perception regarding their competence and readiness to teach in a professional setting. By realizing and considering their competence and readiness for the teaching profession, they willfeel more confident and ready to face the real environment of teaching as a profession

    Teaching Indonesian Speaking Skills with A Gamification Approach

    Speaking skills are essential language skills to master in the digital era. Indonesian teachers are therefore challenged to develop approaches and materials according to the development of students in this era. Gamification is an approach that Indonesian language teachers can develop to be more effective and make students involved in learning. This study intends to further explore gamification's effectiveness in learning speaking skills. The research is a quasi-experimental study involving 34 students of class XI IPS MAN 4 Jakarta in one learning session. All students were involved in total sampling and received treatment as a whole without a control group. The data were observed using a questionnaire according to the curriculum target and analyzed by frequency distribution. The results showed that gamification improved students' abilities, learning motivation, and engagement. The implication is that the gamification designed in this study can be further developed in accordance with the study's limitations. The game can also be developed digitally

    An analysis of speech styles used by two characters in the movie Green Book

    This study analyzes the different speech styles used by two characters in the movie Green Book. The characters are Tony Lip, a white driver, and Dr. Shirley, a black musician. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of speech styles used by the two characters and to find out the differences in the speech styles used. The source of data in this study is the movie script. Descriptive-qualitative method is selected to analyze the data. Joos theory (1967) was applied in this research, which concerns the five types of speech styles including frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate styles. The result of this research shows that Tony Lip only used four types of speech styles: formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Tony Lip dominantly used casual speech style, whereas formal style is the least frequent. Dr. Shirley used all five types of speech styles. Consultative speech style is the most commonly used by Dr. Shirley, whereas frozen speech style is the least frequen

    An exploration of students engagement in EFL classrooms

    The purpose of this research was to explore students' behavioral engagement in the classroom and the factors that affect it. This research was approached using an explorative descriptive qualitative study., involving teachers and students in two classes at the first grade of a senior high school in Langsa, Indonesia. The classes were taught by two English teachers, and 57 students were involved. The instruments used in this research were observations, questionnaires and focus group discussions with teachers and students. The results of this study indicate that most students paid serious attention to the lesson, put their best effort to focus on the teaching and learning process, and complete assignments. In addition, the students were active in asking questions, giving opinions, and participating in group discussion. The results of this study also show that the most dominant factor in influencing students 'engagement was the teachers' support factor, followed by class structure and school level factors. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers and school provide best support to students, and they establish good class structure in terms of class size and situation to improve students engagement

    An investigation on using teaching media in teaching speaking skill

    Teaching media is a mode and learning messages to students that can help teachers to improve students learning achievement. This study aimed at finding kinds of the teaching media used by teacher in teaching speaking skill and the obstacles that she encountered in using teaching media. This study is a qualitative study. There were one teacher and one online class meeting involved in this study. To collect the data, the researcher employed observation via Zoom Cloud Meeting recording and interview. The result of the study indicates that there are 8 of teaching media which are generally used by the teacher, comprising: Zoom application, WhatsApp group, Microsoft word and Microsoft PowerPoint, video, YouTube, whiteboard, and course book. The teacher faced the obstacles toward the difference background of students ability, the number of the students, the availability of network, and the teachers less attention in using teaching media. In short, the teacher should consider the appropriateness of teaching materials to the students level of intelligence because it will help them to understand the material successfully

    An analysis of English language used in daily communication by students of Dayah or Islamic boarding schools

    The objectives of this study were to analyze the policy regarding the language used and to know students perceptions about the use of English language for daily communication. This study used a mixed method and the researcher combined questionnaire, document analysis, and interview to gain the data needed. The subject of this study were 20 students of the sixth grade, and the leader of Dayah or Islamic boarding school. The research finding showed that the Dayah Modern Darul 'Ulum arranged the regulations regarding English language implementation and developed some programs to increase and motivate students to use the English language. In addition, from the questionnaire, in terms of the students perceptions, the finding of this research showed that 72,5% students perceive using English as daily language plays a good role in their speaking skill development, 93,3% students expected daily language program that can help them improve their English speaking skill, and 70% students perceive English language speaking implementation was good enough

    The strategies used by English department students in giving and receiving compliments

    This qualitative research aims to find out the strategies used by students in giving and receiving compliments. The research participants were graduate students of English language education at Syiah Kuala University. In collecting the data, the researcher used the Discourse Completion Task (Henceforth called DCT) framework of Xiang (2013). The researcher carried out an interview adapted from Fattah (2020) to elicit participants understanding in conveying their compliments based on the topic complimented. The findings of DCT revealed that there were three of four types of compliment topics identified: topic appearance, topic ability/performance, and topic possession. The interview result showed that they knew how to utter compliments to each case. The responses strategies tend to use appreciation tokens consisting of 65 answers. The return consists of 11 responses, the question consists of 10 responses, the scale down consists of 8 responses, and comment history consists of 3 responses. While, praise upgrade, request, and qualification consist of 1 response, respectively. The questionnaire and DCT results were equal, which means the participants favored using appreciation tokens in giving and receiving compliments. It occurred due to their habit of daily conversation

    Code-Switching in Lecturer-Students Interaction in Thesis Examination

    Choosing a code when interacting is one of the opportunities that a bilingual has. Code-switching is usually used by bilinguals when interacting with the other person. This study tries to find the types of code-switching and the categories of reasons for using code-switching in lecturer- students interactions in thesis exams. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data was in the form of utterances obtained from recorded interactions of five thesis examination sessions in the English undergraduate program at Syiah Kuala University. The data was analyzed through several processes, including transcribing, data condensation, identifying, marking, grouping, displaying data, and making inferences. The data was analyzed using the theory proposed by Stockwell and Hoffman. From the analysis, it was found that there are three types of code-switching, namely tag switching, inter-sentential, and intra-sentential. Related to the categories of reasons for using code-switching, the researcher found 5 from 7 reasons to do code-switching in lecturer-students interaction in thesis examination. The researcher hoped that the next researcher will further analyze the code-switching that occurs in the thesis exam, not only analyzing the types of code-switching and the reasons for using code-switching, but also analyzing the other side of linguistics
