    The Reproduction of Cultural Capital

Conflict theoretical approaches in the sociology of education have emphasized the importance of cultural capital for the reproduction of class structures. In recent years several scholars - especially Gerhard Schulze - have stressed the point that the traditional theoretical perspective in regard to cultural capital is too narrow. In modern society multiple lifestyles and corresponding types of cultural capital have developed. We have used data from surveys of school students, firstly to analyze the intergenerational reproduction of different types of cultural capital and, secondly, to study the impact of these forms of cultural capital on school success. We come to the conclusion that high-brow culture continues to be strongly reproduced intergenerationally and that only this kind of cultural capital is relevant for school success. With regard to the reproduction of social structure other types of cultural capital seem to have less of an impact

    "Community" in German Sociology (1933-1945)

One of the key concepts around which German sociology was organised after 1933 was that of "community" (Gemeinschaft). This essay examines the interpretation of this concept in the currents of thought: the community theory of the "Ring"-Circle (Boehm, Krieck, etc.), the Leipzig School around Freyer and Ipsen, and"neo-collectivism", as developed in Jena by Jerusalem and Höhn. It is shown that these interpretations not only differ from one another, but also deviate at decisive points from the definition Ferdinand Tönnies gave to the concept in his classic work. "Community" as conceived in the German sociology of this time is far more "Bund" than community in Tönnies' sense

Instrumental or Expressive Voting?. An Empirical Investigation Based on the Hamburg State Elections of September 21, 1997

The classical rational choice theory of voting behavior is challenged in this article by a rival approach: the pure theory of electoral preference. This theory is contrasted with the model of Anthony Downs in order to develop testable hypotheses which make it possible to discriminate empirically between these two approaches. These hypotheses deal with the evaluation of the election platforms of the different parties and their effect on the decision to go to the polls and on the decision about what party to vote for. The empirical test of these hypotheses is carried out with date from the Hamburg state elections of September 21, 1997. As a methodological innovation, the policy preferences of the voters are examined by means of conjoint analysis. The results of the empirical analyses point to the fact that the pure theory of electoral preference is better suited for an explanation of voter behavior than classical rational choice theory. In conclusion some normative implications of these findings are discussed

Group Work, Pay, and Social Justice. About a Neglected Field of Research in Organizational Change

When implementing semi-autonomous group work on the shop floor, blue collar workers have to carry out new tasks to enhance the performance of the whole group. Since traditional pay systems focus on individual performance at single work places, their contributions to the group's performance are not rewarded. This paper asks how workers evaluate this shift within the pay performance relation in terms of fairness. Using data from a standardized employee-survey in twenty-one firms of the German metal-industry it can be shown that a pay system is perceived as unfair if work groups have been implemented while no adjustment of the pay system has taken place. Concurrently the perceived injustice of the pay system increases when workers report lower commitment to the firm and negative evaluation of the factory workers council. Moreover, higher perceptions of injustice are observed in those work units which are less productive and which have a higher absenteeism rate. Based on these results it is argued that not the greater workload or the degree of autonomy at the work place is the main obstacle to teamwork on the shop floor as many industrial sociologists assume. On the contrary, the main challenge for employers and factory workers councils alike is to find a pay system which is regarded as fair

Ethnic Communities or Ethnicization?. Social Categories and Network Structures in Three Swiss Neighborhoods

This article summarizes an empirical research project on the importance of ethnic culture and community in immigrant societies. Three immigrant neighborhoods in Berne, Zurich, and Basel were chosen as research sites. The research team used semi-structured interviews and network analysis to understand the social categories with which Swiss, Italian and Turkish residents described their neighborhood environment and to grasp the everyday social relations they maintained. Three major results are reported: a) Ethno-national groups and identities do not represent the most important principles of classification in the eyes of local residents. Rather, the social world is described in terms of a basic scheme distinguishing between order and disorder. b) From this, a transethnic definition of the us-group results, which does not, however, entirely conform to actually observed networking behavior: three quarters of the social networks were mono-ethnic in their composition. c) In the second generation, the structures of these networks show no differences between the three ethno-national groups. The results conform in part to the multicultural theory of ethnic community formation (b), in part to its competitor, the theory of ethnicization (or racialization) of immigrant societies (a and c). As a concluding point I recommend reorienting research toward a non-teleological, multi-linear model of immigrant incorporation

The Structure of the Network of Interlocking Directorates of Large German Enterprises between 1989 and 2001

In the corporate governance debate that has recently been revived, some commentators argue that the German insider system is moving towards the Anglo-Saxon outsider system (UK, USA) by allowing a market for corporate control to develop. One of their central arguments rests on the observation of the declining number of interlocking directorates that tie together large German corporations. In this article we contest this conclusion by carrying out a structural analysis of the German network of interlocking directorates that reveals a high degree of continuity on the meso- and macro-levels between 1989 and 2001. The slight quantitative weakening of these networks has not been translated into a process of fundamental structural erosion. This is due to the continuation of multiplex interlinking that leaves financial corporations in a central position and reproduces clique as well as core-periphery structures. Together with empirical evidence from elsewhere that suggests no substantial weakening of the network of ownership ties in the future, these findings support the view that corporate control over large German corporations is still governed by a network of interlocking directorates rather than a market for corporate control

Darwin and Sociology. Contingency, Action and Structure in Human Social Behaviors

Although cultural and biological evolution show many similarities, many sociologists continue to reject evolutionary analyses of social behaviour. One reason is that Darwin's original ideas were subsequently replaced by a narrow genetic model of natural selection which tied cultural traits to reproductive success and gave the individual organism an entirely passive role in the evolutionary process. This model could neither explain the many non-adaptive traits in human social behaviour, nor the intentional character of human culture. By contrast, Darwin saw organisms as active participants in natural selection. Their internally guided exploration and choice of strategies of behaviour during their lifetime was just as important for evolution as the genetic inheritance of the result to future generations. Such internal selection includes both error and adaptively redundant traits. It provides a much more suitable model for the evolutionary analysis of human culture, especially innovation and creativity, values, and the organization of social systems

Trust and the Performative Construction of Markets

The concept of trust has recently been rediscovered, especially in the fields of economic sociology and organization theory. Nevertheless, the actual functioning of trust in markets has only been understood incompletely up to now. As this article argues, the reason for this is that conceptualizations of trust have focused primarily on the decision-making process of the truster. The contribution of the trustee, however, has not been comprehensively investigated. I propose understanding trust as a tranquilizer in market relations that is partly produced in the situation itself by the performative acts of self-portrayal of the trustee. On the basis of a taxonomy of four strategies the find part of the article demonstrates the consequences that result for the functioning of markets from this conceptualization of trust relations

Beyond the Face-to-Face Organization. Processes of Growth and the Orientation towards the Capital Market in New Economy Firms

For several years the enterprises of the New Economy were regarded as models for organization in the twenty-first century. Especially Internet firms ("dot.coms") seemed to be able to solve the typical organizational problems of the Old Economy, like prolonged decision-making processes, insufficient cooperation between departments, and poor motivation of employees. The reason why these organizational problems, widespread in the Old Economy, did not occur in the Internet firms was - so the article claims - that the latter were, at least in their early years, group-like "face-to-face-organizations". However, being confronted with demands by venture capitalists for rapid growth, firms were forced to create more pronounced and more differentiated organizational structures. Because many firms tried to maintain their group-like structures for as long as possible, new organizational problems arose such as the centralization of decisions at the top, poor compliance with rules, and Taylorization implemented by computer-supported workflow concepts. These organizational problems specific to New Economy firms remained latent as long as a continuous supply of capital was available. However, after the collapse of the high-tech stock markets and the withdrawal of venture capital the organizational problems of New Economy firms could no longer be ignored
