Architecture ∩ Project ∩ Philosophy
The title of this first issue of Khōrein is written in the lan-guage of Boolean algebra: Architecture ∧ Philosophy. This formal codifi-cation allows me to make three premises and begin to outline my project. First, I would like to make a distinction between symbols, starting with the consideration that the symbol representing intersection in set theory (∩) is different from the symbol representing the Boolean operator AND (∧). Given the formal “correspondence” between Boolean AND and intersec-tion in set theory, I would tend to use this second meaning for my reason-ing: thus, to begin with, I would place “Architecture ∩ Philosophy” as the premise, instead of “Architecture ∧ Philosophy.” Secondly, it is necessary for me to introduce another set into the discourse, namely the “project.” Thirdly, I must ask myself whether it is possible to find a further intersec-tion between “architectural project” and “philosophy.” For this purpose, I will proceed through a series of statements, constructing them as transi-tions from a term X to a term Y. Each transit (“from X to Y”) should be verified in two stages: first by describing how it belongs to the intersec-tion set ‘architecture ∩ project’. In a second step, I should provide some references to philosophy texts that have made each transit viable within the architectural project. Both operations will only be carried out on the first two statements in a sketchy manner, then my project draft will stop
Declarative and Tacit Knowledge in Vitruvius: Disciplina, fabrica and ratiocinatio in De architectura I, 1
In the opening chapter of De architectura Vitruvius ex-amines the knowledge required to practice architecture and the means to acquire it. These, he claims, are manual skills and rational thought on one hand, deductive reasoning on the other. While the former suf-fice to make sound buildings, the latter is needed to integrate the build-ing-to-be in the world order. A scheme emerges: the knowledge required is both procedural and declarative. Vitruvius’ approach was uncommon, because it put these two kinds of knowledge on the same footing. By as-sociating manual skill with rational thought, and claiming that it creates new knowledge, as does deductive reasoning, Vitruvius places himself on the side of modern scholarship, rather, than on that of his contemporary philosophy, as much as he depended on it
Modern State and Myth
The lecture deals with the theories of the modern state and politics that emerged in the middle of the twentieth century and can be seen as a reaction to the rise of political totalitarianism of that time. On the one hand, it points to the theses of Horkheimer and Adorno about the threat to political and social modernity caused by the mixing of Enlightenment principles with mythical thinking. In this context, Cassirer's theory is also of interest, in which the relationship between the mythical symbolic figure and modern political thought is reflected on the level of a philosophy of culture. But it also examines another way of thinking about political modernity, which starts from the continuities between the pre-modern and the modern and identifies the critically highlighted part of the pre-modern
myth as part of a historical, all-encompassing life that also includes the Enlightenment and modern political tendencies
Zabeleška Veljka Mićunovića - prilog istoriji jugoslovenske diplomatije
Veljko Mićunović was a prominent Yugoslav diplomat of the post-war era. In April 1961, Mićunović had a verbal altercation with Josip Broz Tito, the Yugoslav president, while on board the ship “Galeb”. This encounter led Mićunović to document the incident's critical details, which he recorded in a note that expressed his indignation with Tito's actions during the journey. Mićunović's note not only provides valuable insights into this event but also sheds light on Tito's working methods and his interactions with his subordinates. Moreover, the document also highlights the deep-seated animosity that existed between Tito and some of his colleagues in the state-party leadership, which
would continue until the early 1970s. This conflict was particularly apparent in Tito's cooperation with the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, where Mićunović spent over two decades of his career
