War In Ukraine and Facebook Emoji Wars

    No full text
The research is based on content analysis and statistical analysis of reactions and interactions related to the most popular online media posts about the war in Ukraine in the Serbian language during the first year of the war. The analyzed posts had a total of 92, 693 interactions and 264, 115 reactions in seven forms: “like”, “love”, “care”, “wow“, “angry”, “haha” and “sad”. Among them, expectedly, the most common is “like,” with a participation rate of 84. 47%, followed by “haha” with 8. 8%. The aim of the research was to identify patterns of interactions and reactions related to posts about the war in Ukraine, focusing on the use of emojis, as well as identifying editorial strategies that intensify the popularity of the post. Almost all observed headlines contain some form of dramatization, exaggeration, or fatalism. Emoji analysis shows that the audience reacts more harshly to headlines about war and suffering when individual victims are not highlighted, when they are invisible. Assuming that mainstream media content caters to the average consumer and meets their expectations, it is clear why the most popular texts about the war in Ukraine are pro-Russian. The portrayal of war in the headlines of these texts is extremely simplified, fairy-tale binary, primarily interested in emphasizing Russian dominance and power. A large number of popular headlines are then used as a basis for expressing sneer, cynicism, and enjoyment in misfortune (German: Schadenfreude). Administrators of Facebook pages and websites of observed portals have a precise insight into what kind of content triggers mass reactions, so they choose topics, approaches, and headline formulations accordingly. In such an environment, a system of bandwagoning accumulates unempathetic and impulsive reactions, and users are encouraged to join in rejoicing over suffering and cheering for further escalation of conflict

What Is ‘Perpetual Change’? Concept or Protocol(s) of Change in John Ruskin as Substance of Architectural Writing

    No full text
As an architect and philosopher respectively, we have written a two‑part text (architectural‑philosophical) that would present the main outlines and figures of writing about architecture and architectural writing in John Ruskin. His endeavour to describe buildings and cities transformed into an imperative to find ‘the substance of the architectural’, simultaneously preserving the utmost significance of its ontological aspect, that is, change. We reconstruct Ruskin’s understanding of various protocols of ‘change’ in two different ways: first, within the general difficulty in the histories of Western culture and thought to determine ‘change’ (which is certainly not a Western invention), and where Ruskin’s contribution is crucial. Further, we understand Ruskin’s project as being in a state of tension between continuous amendment of his written description of buildings, while defending the paradoxical intransience of change that goes beyond the objects in which it is manifested. Ruskin’s method of endless correction and revision thus becomes an introduction to the preservation of the unadaptable and unchanging, and then also the beautiful

A Portrait in Words: Ksenija Atanasijević on José Ortega y Gasset

Ksenija Atanasijević significantly contributed to the introduction of the thoughts of José Ortega y Gasset into the area of the Serbian language. She dedicated one of her late articles, published in 1967, to this philosopher of ratiovitalism. It can be argued that this text of a synthetic character belongs to the genre of philosophical portrait, in which the work and theoretical positions of a certain author are primarily discussed, in addition to the presentation of data from his life, and that the portrayal of a thinker cannot be reduced to his visual-artistic representation. Before focusing on the article in question, a review was made of the history of writing about Ortega and the general reception of his thought in Yugoslavia, as well as the presence of Spanish authors and motifs in the writings of Ksenia Atanasijević. One of the emphasis is placed on disputed claims about the Madridian philosopher, that is, his work

Controversial transformation of industrial spaces: Case of the Belgrade Waterfront, Serbia

    No full text
During a 30-year long transition period with quite turbulent economic and political dynamics, the capital of Serbia has been left with numerous abandoned industrial sites and structures. Further, in the last two decades, Belgrade has been undergoing radical urbanization processes with the Belgrade Waterfront being the largest urban-mega project. It has been controversial from the very beginning because of the politics-led decision-making, lack of transparency, weak civil engagement and criticism received from numerous experts in the field of architecture and urban planning (Peric, Maruna & Nedović-Budić, 2022). Many old structures have been transformed or removed, such as the main train station and the railway, which completely changed the sense of place (Feld and Basso, 1996). The chapter focuses on one potentially good aspect of this transformation – the old railway roundhouse with the coal burning room and water tower, structures which had been abandoned and neglected for decades. Now, they are in the process of becoming protected as part of the cultural and industrial heritage of Belgrade. Moreover, the current plan is to reconstruct them and transform them into cultural and creative hubs. Considering the fact that most other structures in the Belgrade Waterfront have been removed or decontextualized, this case shows good practice for the revitalization of old, neglected structures. This is something which is very much needed in the context of questionable, radical urban transformations that imply destruction or damaging of heritage. The chapter investigates this particular initiative, both regarding the heritage protection process and urban transformation. Through archival research, the author aims to provide evidence for the historical and cultural significance of this site. Urban and architectural plans are consulted in order to offer a wider picture of the whole transformation process of this area. By analyzing media sources and through interviews with key experts, the whole initiative is scrutinized from historic, urban, economic, political, social, and ecological perspectives

    Nancy Fraser and Politics

    No full text
When Nancy Fraser’s name is mentioned, the terms that most readily come to mind are ‘Marxist feminism’ and ‘critical theory’. While feminism is undoubtedly a hugely contested term and a hardly surveyable field of study criss-crossed by all kinds of disciplinary and political-ideological boundaries, critical theory is an even harder case of battling definitions and fluid boundaries. We therefore find it important to spell out clearly, at the outset, what it means to say that Nancy Fraser is a critical theorist, which requires that we explain a thing or two about what critical theory is – for us

Jevreji u antikomunističkoj propagandi kolaboracionističkog dnevnog lista Novo vreme u okupiranoj Srbiji 1941. godine

    No full text
