Informal Participation Methods - An Addition to Formal Urban and Spatial Planning Systems
In the field of urban and spatial planning, formal methods often dominate. However, informal participation methods can significantly complement these processes by enhancing community engagement and enriching decision-making. These informal methods promote inclusivity and richness, engaging a broader range of people, including those who may not participate in formal processes. This helps build social capital, fostering trust and stronger social networks within communities. Additionally, informal participation can enhance public consensus and improve stakeholders’ understanding of local issues, resulting in more contextually relevant outcomes. Moreover, the promptness of informal methods allows for timely responses to emerging issues.
Despite these benefits, informal methods also pose several challenges. They may require specific skills and expertise not always available to local governments. The associated costs, including new technologies and hiring experts, can be higher than those of formal methods. Furthermore, informal methods may require longer preparation times, as they often involve complex representations and detailed analysis. Lastly, these methods can prolong discussion times, potentially leading to increased friction between stakeholders and decision-makers.
Balancing these advantages and disadvantages is crucial for effectively integrating informal methods into the formal planning system to promote more inclusive and resilient urban development
Kant in His Context: An Apology of the Enlightenment Reason
The intention of the work is to orient Kant’s thought with regard to his contemporaries
who thought and wrote in German and operated within the same cultural circle.
The critical gesture of Kant’s self-reflexive Enlightenment, to which the first part of
the work is dedicated, is considered to be decisive in that context. Subsequently, the
criticisms of Kant by Hamann and Herder, and the controversy of Mendelssohn and
Jacobi, as well as Kant’s answers and reactions to them, are thematized, respectively.
Finally, the influence of Kant on Fichte and early German romanticism is presented.
It is found that the latter in an ambivalent way radicalize and lead to paroxysms Kantian
Enlightenment, while simultaneously deviating from and opposing it. It is concluded
that this dynamic, exposed through the lenses of understanding the reason and critique,
could be instructive for our contemporary times as well
Iako digitalni prostor nudi mogućnosti za istraživanje sebe, povezivanje s vršnjacima i društvenu participaciju, istovremeno postavlja izazove poput socijalnog poređenja, virtuelnog nasilja i digitalne zavisnosti. Kroz analizu lokalnog konteksta Srbije, diskutuje se o specifičnim izazovima mladih u oblikovanju identiteta u postkonfliktnom društvenom okruženju i ulozi digitalnih platformi u formiranju kolektivnih pripadnosti. In the digital age, young people’s personal identity and social identifications are shaped within a hybrid ecosystem that integrates both face-to-face interactions and those mediated by digital media. This paper explores the role of digital media in adolescent identity development, emphasizing how social networks provide new resources for self-exploration, expression, and identity stabilization. While the digital space offers opportunities for self-discovery, peer connection, and social participation, it also presents challenges such as social comparison, cyberbullying, and digital addiction. Special attention is given to social media as the dominant platform in young people’s daily lives—not only as a space for personal expression but also as a medium that shapes collective identifications through interactions with both global and local digital communities. Research shows that young people use digital media to construct and present their identities through multimodal expressions, while ethnic, gender, and cultural identifications remain subject to dynamic changes and digital engagement influences. This paper also examines multicultural and intercultural frameworks, exploring how digital spaces facilitate transnational connections while also potentially reinforcing social polarization. Through an analysis of the local Serbian context, the paper discusses the specific challenges young people face in shaping their identities within a post-conflict social environment and the role digital platforms play in forming collective affiliations. Finally, the paper highlights the need for developing digital literacy and strategies to support young people in navigating digital environments—promoting critical participation, reducing risks, and ensuring resources for healthy identity development in a multicultural world
Zaboravljanje Hegela u delima Ernesta Laklaua: nesrećno razdruživanje
Ernesto Laclau criticises Hegelian dialectics for allegedly introducing the logic of necessity into Marxism, which, he argues, hinders the consideration of contingency. This article examines Laclau’s interpretation of Hegelian dialectics across various works and scrutinises his exploration of the concepts of determination, negativity, and contingency. Revisiting these concepts may offer a non-deterministic understanding of dialectics more aligned with post-foundational political thought, thereby facilitating reflection on social ontology and antagonisms. IntroductionErnesto Laklau kritikuje hegelijansku dijalektiku zbog navodnog uvođenja logike nužnosti u marksizam, što, kako on tvrdi, ometa razmatranje kontingencije. Ovaj rad ispituje Laklauovo tumačenje hegelijanske dijalektike u njegovim različitim delima i pomno ispituje njegovo istraživanje pojmova determinacije, negativnosti i kontingencije.
Double Standards in Judging Collective Action
Collective action is a powerful force driving social change but often sparks contention about what actions are acceptable means to effect social change. We investigated double standards in judging collective action—that is, whether observers judge the same protest actions to be more acceptable depending on who the protesters are and what they are protesting. In two studies, we used item response theory to develop an instrument of 25 controversial protest actions to measure where people draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable forms of collective action. In three preregistered experiments (N = 2,776), we found no consistent evidence for ingroup bias in terms of social class when judging protests for workers’ rights (Experiment 1), in terms of race when judging protests for and against defunding the police (Experiment 2), and in terms of gender when judging protests for and against restricting abortion (Experiment 3). Instead, we found that progressive participants (Experiments 1–3) who rejected system-justifying beliefs (Experiments 1 and 2) considered the same protest actions more acceptable when a cause aligned with their ideological orientation (for workers’ rights, for defunding the police, against restricting abortion) than when it did not (against defunding the police, for restricting abortion). Conservative participants considered the same actions somewhat more acceptable when protesters supported, rather than opposed, restricting abortion (Experiment 3) but considered all protest actions, for and against defunding the police, equally unacceptable (Experiment 2). Our findings have theoretical and practical implications for understanding the often-divided response to social movements
