Islamska filozofija i moderna društvena nauka: potreba za preispitivanjem metoda formiranja društvenih teorija u sferi religijske kulture

Social theories are logically associated with a series of terms that represent their principles and consequences. When they are realized in society, they actualize the entire network of their conceptual additions in a logical order. One part of this network primarily attracts the attention of the scientific community, while the other one remains hidden and takes the form of marginal knowledge. Modern social science theories move from the margins to the center of society once their philosophical principles are actualized even in the sphere of general culture. In the context of Islamic culture, these theories appeared in the shadow of the credibility of the political and economic domination of Western societies, and their philosophical principles remained hidden on the margins of domestic knowledge. In the domestic cultural atmosphere, based on significantly different knowledge, modern social theories have caused cultural and historical disturbances, because they have not been reconstructed in accordance with the needs of the cognitive heritage of Islam. Logical principles of modern science have gradually left the marginal sphere and dominantly influenced their new and weakened cultural environment, which is facing identity challenges and crises on its way to complete transformation.

Virtual Aunts and Uncles: A Community Between National Minority and Diaspora

    No full text
The past decade has seen mass emigration of Hungarians from Serbia to the kin- state and Western European countries. This has resulted in a need for new ways of understanding what it means to belong to the community, both empirically and in terms of theorizing it. Unpacking the complex dynamics of identification of a national minority community with high diasporic tendencies calls for an approach that merges the lens of national minority and diaspora studies. The research I present analyzes the common themes of the two humorous Facebook pages popular among Vojvodina Hungarians, namely rurality, food, ethnic others, and crossing borders, taking them to be important elements of the community’s identity. Connecting these topics to the concepts of community, nostalgia, home, minority, and borders, I argue that the content and style of these topics not only represent and revoke but also construct a Vojvodina Hungarian identity in which community membership does not rest on being in, but on being from Vojvodina

Širenje homofobije kao zaraze: Kritička analiza homofobnog diskursa o epidemiji majmunskih boginja u Srbiji 2022. godine kroz prizmu glokalnosti

Shortly after the revelation of the spread of monkeypox (MB), both in developed Western societies and in Serbia, discourses of homophobia appeared in texts published on the portals of domestic e-newspapers, as well as in public reactions on social networks. The subject of this paper is the discourse of contagion of monkeypox, which manifested itself as a (relatively) new form of discursive embodiment of homophobia in Serbian society. We will try to show that the homophobic discourse of contagion, on the one hand, has a long history in the societies of the center of world capitalism (labeling gay men as carriers of infectious diseases), since the whole situation is irresistibly reminiscent of the moral (sexual) panic related to the emergence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, as well as other infectious diseases. On the other hand, the discourse on MB takes a specific glocal form in meeting the prevailing homophobia of the local Serbian society on the semi-periphery of world capitalism with two global phenomena – the monkeypox epidemic and the manifestation of Europride in Belgrade in 2022. More precisely, the discourse of contagion of MB is manifested in the claim that gay men are the source of the MB epidemic, which threatens to culminate during Europride and thus represents a danger for the Serbian nation. Finally, we will offer a reconceptualization of the Western-centric notion of homonationalism, which is a concept in social theory that tries to explain homophobia, and which must be replaced with the notion of heteronationalism, more adequate for understanding the hegemonic anti-gay rhetoric typical for Eastern European societies. Empirical data which will be collected with critical discourse analysis in this study consists of two parts. The first part tries to map the structural (top-down) aspect of this phenomenon, by analyzing the articles of the online version of the domestic media, which constructed the MB epidemic as a “gay contagion”. The second part tries to determine the actor’s (bottom-up) perspective, by analyzing the comments within a section of the public on social media posts that thematized Europride as a threat of spreading the MB.Ubrzo nakon saznanja o pojavi majmunskih boginja (MB), kako u zapadnim društvima, tako i u Srbiji, javili su se i diskursi homofobije u tekstovima objavljenim na portalima domaćih e-novina, kao i u reakcijama javnosti na društvenim mrežama. S druge strane, diskurs o MB-u preuzima specifičnu glokalnu formu u susretanju preovlađujuće homofobije lokalnog srpskog društva na poluperiferiji svetskog kapitalizma i dve globalne pojave – epidemije majmunskih boginja i manifestacije Evroprajda u Beogradu 2022. godine.

The article examines Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s concept of the “closed commercial state” and his views on war and borders. The author analyzes Fichte’s use of the term “natural borders” and its role in legitimizing state consolidation through warfare. The paper explores Fichte’s argument that philosophers have historically “sighed over wars” and his assertion that war is inevitable in the current state of affairs. Fichte proposes that to abolish war, its root cause must be eliminated by allowing each state to obtain its natural borders. The author delves into Fichte’s notion of the “closed commercial state” and how it relates to the idea of natural borders. Fichte envisions this state as self-sufficient and detached from others, with clearly defined boundaries. The concept of “internal borders” is also discussed as a means to surpass and replace natural borders. The paper examines Fichte’s justification for a “final war” that would end all future wars by establishing natural borders. The author critiques the logic of this argument, noting that it could potentially lead to a global conflict. Fichte’s attempt to make this final war as peaceful as possible is analyzed, including his idea of an “occupation march” rather than a bloody conflict. The author argues that this conception relies on negating the existence of the “other” state. Finally, the article discusses Fichte’s view on commercial warfare and its relation to territorial conflicts. The author con cludes by reflecting on how Fichte’s project of a closed state ultimately turns inward, negating the very concept of borders as interfaces with others

Extended reality for education: Mapping current trends, challenges, and applications

    No full text
The advancements in 5G technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have accelerated the integration of immersive technologies such as Extended Reality (XR) into educational practices. There is a notable scarcity of studies focusing specifically on the applications and impact of XR in academic settings. Most existing research has concentrated on AR and VR, leaving a gap in understanding the full potential of XR. Addressing these gaps and challenges is crucial for harnessing the full potential of XR in education. This study aims to map and analyze the applications, trends, and educational challenges of XR technology. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis covering XR's application in education from 2018 to 2023, analyzing 32 articles from Scopus sources. Key findings highlight XR's annual growth in research publications, with significant contributions from the United States, China, and Canada. XR enriches education by facilitating immersive simulations, real time interaction with virtual objects, and spatial manipulation in three dimensions. It fosters presence and embodiment in virtual environments, supports practical training through realistic simulations, enhances multi-sensory engagement, promotes collaborative learning environments, and improves accessibility for diverse learners. The main challenges of XR technology include high costs, technical hurdles, regulatory issues, infrastructure limitations, and the need for digital literacy and skills. Addressing these challenges, collaborative efforts among educators, researchers, and industry stakeholders are required. Such collaboration is crucial for harnessing the full potential of XR technology to revolutionize education and prepare learners for a dynamic future

Navigating the Digital Age. An In-Depth Exploration into the Intersection of Modern Technologies and Societal Transformation

    No full text
Navigating the Digital Age explores how modern technologies impact our societies and our lives. Throughout history, technologies and media, from Roman roads to today’s 5G and nanotechnologies, have influenced our society and reshaped our behavior and lifestyle. Compiled by a group of international academic authors, this book describes numerous ways technology is reshaping our world, the environments, the communities we belong to, and our understanding of them. It is hard to imagine a technology that only affects society/culture, or a society/culture that only affects technology. Rather, we observe a reciprocal process: On the one hand, technology develops from the needs of society, while on the other hand, technology changes societ

This paper explores the nexus between marriage and citizenship. Its basic assumption is that, historically, marriage imposed limits on the right to equal participation in citizenship for women. In order to support this hypothesis, modes of historical formation of marriage are examined, first in the Middle Ages, then in the era of so-called abstract equality, and finally in the 19th century, when citizenship had been established as a political institution. Marriage as a legal institution is situated within the historical development of the public and the private, and the transformation of absolute rights of persons. The paper focuses on the state of coverture: the situation of married women in Anglo-Saxon legislature. This examination of the specificities of the dual development of private persons finds that the specific position of married women not only delayed their acquisition of the status of citizen, but also remained deeply interwoven in the texture of citizenship itself

"The Business of Umbilical Cord Biobanking in Serbia: Biocapital(ism) and Symbolic Geographies of Health"

    No full text
The storage of stem cells from umbilical cord blood for private, individual purposes has emerged as a significant social phenomenon over the past two decades. The technology of cord blood storage offers the potential for stem cells to be used in the treatment of various illnesses, creating new possibilities for medical intervention and cure. The storage of stem cells obtained from post-birth umbilical cord blood (UCB) has emerged as a significant area of scientific research and medical advancement. This process involves the collection and preservation of UCB stem cells for various purposes, such as scientific investigations or personalized medical treatments. Biobanks, whic serve as repositories for biological materials, can be categorized into two types: public and private, depending on their collection methods and utilization practices. Public biobanks primarily rely on voluntary donations and supply umbilical cord blood for medical requirements, while private biobanks collect and store individuals’ cord blood for a fee, ensuring accessibility for their own future medical needs, Private biobanks have expanded globally, crossing national borders to offer their services to parents seeking to store cord blood for potential medical use

The vagaries of restorative justice: Borders between restorative justice and justice as punishment

    No full text
This paper explores the complex interplay between restorative justice and traditional punitive justice systems. While proportional and rationalistic justice focuses on establishing some kind of disturbed equilibrium between crime and a normal state of affairs in society, or on preventing future crimes by increasing the costs of committing it for the offender, restorative justice focuses on the actual restoration of the type of social capital that has been degraded by time. Restorative justice thus works on healing and reconciliation, and tends to contrast sharply with punitive justice, which emphasizes retribution and deterrence. One of the main obstacles to a broad implementation of restorative justice is connected with community expectations. Most communities have been habituated to expect punitive justice and have internalized these expectations as their psychological way to achieve “closure” after a crime has victimized some members of the community or, indirectly, the community as a whole. Thus one of the challenges of modern restorative justice in practice is how to integrate it with more traditional views on punitive justice, which is the preoccupation of this brief paper
