Perceived warmth and competence of people who care for abandoned animals

    No full text
Caring for abandoned animals—such as feeding or adopting them—often evokes mixed social responses. This study explores stereotypes toward people who care for and rescue abandoned animals („rescuers“), with a focus on perceptions of their warmth and competence. We also examined the potential influence of speciesism, the belief in the moral superiority of humans over other animals, on these perceptions. We hypothesized that people who score higher on speciesist attitudes are more likely to view caregivers as warm but less competent. Using a correlational-regression design, a convenience sample of 157 participants (121 women, 35 men, average age 37) was recruited online in Serbia and Croatia. Participants indicated their perceived warmth (α = 0.69) and competence (α = 0.77) of people who care for abandoned animals, and the Speciesism Scale (α = 0.79), adapted from Branković (2021). Results indicated a statistically significant difference between warmth and competence perceptions, with rescuers viewed as significantly warmer (M = 19.86, SD = 3.33) than competent (M = 14.44, SD = 3.58) (t (155) = 15.97, p < .01). Speciesism correlated negatively with perceptions of competence of the rescuers (r = -0.183, p < .01). However, we did not observe a positive correlation between speciesism and the perception of warmth of people who help abandoned animals (r = 0.017, p > .01). This research suggests that societal stereotypes about rescuers emphasize warmth over competence, potentially due to perceptions that their activities reflect compassion but lack practicality. The findings highlight the influence of speciesist attitudes on these stereotypes, suggesting that stereotypes about people who care for abandoned animals reflect the attitude toward animals. This study contributes to understanding social attitudes toward animal caregivers and has implications for improving societal views and support systems for such initiatives

Globalne mreže solidarnosti u borbi protiv ekstraktivizma

    No full text

Narandžastožuta fascikla - Trivo Inđić: književost i umetnost

    No full text

    Svest, duhovnost i ontološka dubina

    No full text
This paper aims to achieve two complementary goals. The first goal is to outline and motivate a general account of spirituality along the lines of the so-called perennial philosophy. From this perspective, the essence of spirituality lies in establishing an orientation towards, and an inspirational connection to, a cosmic consciousness where the latter serves both as the ground of all infra-cosmic subjects and as an ultimate source of meaning and value. The second goal is to demonstrate that one of the advantages of this outlook on the nature of spirituality consists of the fact that it opens up the door for a potential rehabilitation of an important yet neglected idea, namely, the idea that concrete reality admits various grades of intension, or ontological depth

Pripadnost, migracija i uključenost u građansku sferu

    No full text
In this article, we explore the intersection of migration, membership, and inclusion through Civil Sphere Theory (CST), the most powerful theory currently available for explaining social solidarity in modern, differentiated societies. While CST has amply proven its worth by deepening our understanding of social solidarity and civil repair within established polities, it has insufficiently addressed the boundaries that define inclusion and exclusion in the context of migration. We open the article by reconceptualizing immigration as the crossing of geographical, political, and symbolic boundaries. This perspective shifts the focus from linear processes of inclusion to the dynamic interplay between national membership, citizenship, and the civil sphere. Drawing on CST’s nuanced approach to cultural and social boundaries, the paper makes explicit how in the contemporary world, national and civil memberships are tightly coupled. Concerning migration, the civil sphere must consequently mediate between the formal inclusivity of liberal-democratic ideals and the bounded character of national belonging. We further advance a critique of CST’s limited attention to citizenship, emphasizing how citizenship remains a key conduit for universalizing national membership. To conclude, we identify the engine of potential membership change in the tension between social and symbolic boundaries embedded in differentiated societies. This approach bridges migration studies and cultural sociology, providing some preliminary insights into the mechanisms involved in civil incorporation.U ovom članku istražujemo odnos između migracije, pripadnosti i uključenosti kroz prizmu teorije građanske sfere, trenutno najsnažnijeg teorijskog okvira za razumevanje društvene solidarnosti u savremenim, diferenciranim društvima.

The End of Art, Modernism and Postmodernism

    No full text
This article tries to offer a contribution with regard to the understanding of the periods of modernism and postmodernism in the arts through a Hegelian point of view. Based on Hegel’s thesis about the end of art, the article tries to show how modernism can be seen, at the same time, as both the realization and the negation of this end, for modernist art embodies the reflective character demanded by the modern spirit and at the same time it tries to resist the loss of relevance of art in the modern world. This type of art, thus, tries to be more than just an aesthetic experience by seeking to influence life and society and to reclaim for itself the primary role of expressing the truth. Postmodernism, in turn, as the negation of modernism, fully carries out Hegel’s reading on the art of his own time, accepting this loss of relevance and turning to representations that no longer have the goal of being spirit’s highest mode of self-apprehension. Postmodernism has, however, two possible readings: it can either be seen negatively, as an art that has become sterile and that demands to be accepted by institutions and the market, or positively, as an extension of the freedom achieved by modernist experimentations to every artistic production without being limited by a programmatic view. Both these readings show the intrinsic contradictions of artistic postmodernism and the role of philosophy in apprehending it

Women in Black, Belgrade, Serbia, 1990s

    No full text
The entry zooms in on manifests and proclamations of the Belgrade based group Women in Black (WiB), an antimilitarist, antinationalist, feminist group established in October 1991, in response to the first war on the former Yugoslav soil. The group remained the staunchest advocate for peace in the Balkans. It devised an alternative approach to peace, care, transnational solidarity, economy, memorising and confronting the past, in its demand for a different social world. The entry focuses on ethics, politics and economy of care created by WiB during the 1990s, the decade of post-Yugoslav wars.https://www.bloomsburycollections.com/monograph-detail?docid=b-9781350457348&pdfid=9781350457348.ch-22.pdf&tocid=b-9781350457348-chapter2

From Harmony to Atmospheres: The Mutations of the Idea of Beauty in Architecture

    No full text
This article shows how and why the word “beauty” has become rare and progressively devalued in architectural discourse, as it has been in the discourse of other arts and that branch of philosophy known as aesthetics. The devaluation of the word “beauty” in architectural discourse, its rarefaction, and its changes in meaning, are incomprehensible without broadening the focus of reflection to the history of ideas. I will therefore outline the genealogy of this devaluation by distinguishing three historical-conceptual paradigms, and showing how the architectural and theoretical works of Vitruvius and Alberti, Blondel and Perrault, Norberg-Schulz and Zumthor bear the mark of these subterranean mutation

    Nasleđe, primenjena istorija i demokratija

    No full text
This paper examines the complex relationship between heritage, public history and democracy, arguing that heritage is not a neutral transmission of the past but a contested, constructed and politically charged process. Drawing on critical heritage studies and public history scholarship, the text evaluates how dynamic memory practices can both empower communities and reinforce existing power structures. Special attention is paid to the concept of dissonant heritage, which challenges singular narratives by exposing the omissions, silences and exclusions inherent in heritage-making processes. In contexts where democratic institutions are fragile or delegitimised, the paper identifies grassroots, bottom-up heritage initiatives as spaces for civic interventions and resistance. This work advocates participatory and reflective heritage practices, positioning heritage and public history as essential tools for democratic engagement and future-oriented cultural governance.
