From the history of oceanic seafaring to spatial revolution: Carl Schmitt’s "Land and Sea", Chapters 9 and 10

    No full text
The narrative structure of Carl Schmitt’s Land and Sea, as the unfolding of its subtitle – a world-historical mediation – is provided, in the passage from Chapter 9 to Chapter 10, with both a pause, in the ‘historical’ narrative, and a transition, in the level of analysis. The pause is the preparatory stage for the transition: the first appearance of the notion of a spatial revolution which will assume a central position in the further development of the subsequent chapters. The adoption of this approach creates an interpretative distance between Schmitt, as the addressor/writer, and the implied addressee/reader of the part of the narrative contained in these chapters. The distance enables the analysis to consider both the poles of addressor/writer and addressee/reader and to situate the transitional position of these chapters as an opening through which to consider the broader theoretical and political composition of the text

Gender Equality for Show: Serbian Performative Europeanization

    No full text
The chapter aims to show how gender equality can be used for populist purposes, becoming performative in the constitution of façade democracy. It looks at specifics of the relationship between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the state-led gender equality policymaking in Serbia. Namely, in contrast to the anti-gender mobilization worldwide, most often heartily supported by the relevant religious actors, Serbia witnessed an unexpected silence on the side of the SOC representatives on issues of gender equality. The chapter provides a look back at the years prior to 2017, demonstrating the power and presence of SOC in shaping Serbian conservative politics, to then focus on the recent political developments, revolving around the appointment of the first lesbian Prime Minister. The chapter ultimately shows how the catch-all populism of the current regime succeeds in capturing gender equality from the feminist movement, making the Serbian Orthodox Church, at the same time, the most unlikely ally in the state gender equality for show

Engagement with Future Generations: Unfulfilled Empathy

    No full text
In this article, our focus is on the topic of engagement and possibility of empathy with future generations. We acknowledge that empathy for future generations is practically unattainable in its strictest sense due to the lack of access to their potential mental states and the absence of direct interaction. Additionally, we will draw upon the arguments presented by Goldie and Slaby to address concerns regarding the potential paternalization that may arise in empathic relations towards future generations. However, despite these limitations, it is important to emphasize that we are still engaged with future generations. Instead of adopting a paternalizing approach where we impose expectations on how they should feel, our engagement exposes us to the anticipated but unknown judgments of future generations. Throughout this article, we will argue that engagement with future generations brings out our own social self-consciousness and provides a basis of our connectedness and responsibility towards future generations

Epilogue: Future Work in and for Emancipatory Education

    No full text
The triangle of crisis-education-emancipation seems to represent a stable both conceptual and historical constant, which then appears in almost countless modes, depending on how those three always co-defining terms are understood. We have offered, a cogent and representative, albeit not all-encompassing or exhaustive, spectrum of these understandings—sometimes they seem so different that it might be more appropriate to talk about all these pivotal concepts in the plural: about educations, emancipations and crises. Nevertheless, we decided to gather them all around or within a processual figure that is marked by the insight into the crisis, the will for emancipation, and the vision of emancipatory or emancipated education. We believe monistic structure and its over-determinants will not cloud the readers’ view of the presented plurality of their manifestations

Norming Participatory Practices of Movement Parties in Southeast Europe

    No full text
The scholarship on ‘movement parties’ – parties originating from social movements – shows great variation among them in terms of origin, ideological profile, organizational forms and adopted strategies. Typically, they depart from participatory practices and contribute to participatory turns in politics. However, there is scant research on how movement parties maintain those principles and procedures once they enter the institutional arena. Moreover, the question of intra-party democracy (IPD) is itself rarely researched, particularly in Southeast Europe (SEE), a region dominated by authoritarian centralized parties. Therefore, this chapter aims to contribute to the growing literature on party movements by focusing on SEE and looking into their party movements’ internal democracy practices. We take examples of two ideologically similar democratic movement parties, MOŽEMO! (We Can) from Croatia and Zeleno-levi front (Green-Left Front) from Serbia. Both originated as bottom-up green-left movements within political settings dominated by right-wing political narratives but in differing national contexts regarding the quality of democracy. This chapter presents an analysis of MOŽEMO! and Zeleno-levi front statutory documents, focusing primarily on their articulation of participatory principles for IPD

Voting preferences of the transitional losers: A perspective from Serbia

    No full text
Economic crises create specific social conditions that affect voter preferences and behaviors. The Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 spilled over to Serbia a year later, causing a major shock to the fragile Serbian economy, already burdened by wars and international isolation of the 1990s, along with inequalities and uncertainties caused by the late transition. Subsequent elections brought the collapse of the post-2000 political consensus, with many liberal and social democratic parties never recovering and moreover the party system being dominated by the populist Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) from there on. Main hypothesis of this manuscript stipulates that the 2008 crisis cemented the pool of transitional losers composed of low skilled workers, unemployed, low educated, rural, and elderly populations, providing continuous support for the SNS ever since. Authors will examine whether their socioeconomic status still replicates to the SNS votes, even though the party has been in power for almost 12 years. This would mean that the old economic traumas are still relevant for directing the voter preferences. Authors will employ the findings from the nationwide public opinion surveysPlease do not cite or distribute without permission of the authors

Radije bih sebi odgrizao jezik nego da ih podržim: paraliza političkog aktivizma u Srbiji

    No full text
The text analyses how the discursive paralysis of political engagement in Serbia is triggered and manifested, as well as how the elements connected with this paralysis are reproduced and reinforced. We begin with the premise that the discursive paralysis of political engagement interacts with two elements: understanding politics as an inherently immoral field of activity, and the importance placed upon personal moral integrity as an essential personal resource for citizens of Serbia. Based on the empirical data from Facebook comments made on a Serbian news portal, the text analyses and presents two types of strategies used to trigger paralysis, as well as how these comments reproduce and reinforce the very perception of politics as a field of immorality and the significance of moral integrity as a personal resource. Finally, we show how these ele- ments are reproduced independently of one another, outside their particular context of “defence” from attack and “precaution.”U tekstu se analizira kako se pokreće i manifestuje diskurzivna paraliza političkog aktivizma u Srbiji, kao i kako se reprodukuju i pojačavaju elementi povezani sa ovom paralizom.

    Epikurejsko razumijevanje empatije: prijateljstvo

    No full text

Social Identification as Representation, Construction, or Subjective Experience: Ontological Frictions in Psychology and Lessons from Social Ontology

    No full text
How can social identity be conceptualized in psychology? What is and what should the philosophical basis of this conceptualization be? The first goal of this chapter is to introduce the two contested theories of social identity in psychology, namely social identity theory and discursive theory, as well as critically analyze their ontological presumptions as conditions for theory and empirical research. The second and primary goals are to interact with relevant social ontological positions and offer a synthesis of useful ideas and concepts for psychological understanding of social identification. These ideas and concepts include the significance of affect and subjective experience, the group as a plural subject and a foundation for social identification, collective intentionality, and agency, as well as the ambiguity between collectivity and individuality. These aspects are complementary for the psychological theorization of social identification, as psychology has much to learn from these areas in order to conceptualize this phenomenon effectively, comprehend its dynamics between the individual and the collective, and establish itself as an empirical discipline focused on the subjective aspects of social identification beyond cognitivism and constructionism.Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosoph

    No full text
The aim of this study was to construct and validate a new instrument for assessing Academic Self-Handicapping. The instrument consists of 22 items. A total of 251 participants, consisting of high-schoolers and university students, participated in the study. The results confirm sound psychometric properties and the validity of the scale. Exploratory factor analysis identified one component that explains 28% of the total variance. Convergent and discriminant validity was tested through correlation analyses with the subscales of the instruments HEXACO-60, Self-Liking/ Self-Competence scale, and Self-Handicapping Questionnaire. Academic Self-Handicapping was strongly negatively correlated with Conscientiousness, dimensions of Self-Esteem, Extraversion and Honesty, positively related with Emotionality and four Self-Handicapping strategies. In the paper we discuss potential understanding of Academic Self-Handicapping as the manifestation of depression in academic context and that the root cause of these behaviors lies in the achievement-oriented school system. We conclude that our instrument can be used to assess the Academic Self-Handicapping of students and can serve as a useful tool for understanding the psychological systems of students. Honesty, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Aggreableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to experience)(Ashton & Lee, 2007),
