Calling possible worlds into reality: The spiritual aspects of psychotherapy
The structure and content of the concept of ‘normalcy’ in modern culture, and in the
helping professions, point to an ideal. To be ‘normal’ or ‘mentally (perfectly) healthy’ is largely
the same as fulfilling an ideal of perfect socialization. A perfectly ‘normal’ person would thus be
a perfectly resilient, perfectly balanced, perfectly motivated, perfectly constructive, perfectly
loving etc. member of society, partner, or family member. The ‘psych-professions’ see mental
health in terms of the varying degrees of approximation to this ideal. However, they always
overlook the spiritual precondition for any person to move towards the ideal of normalcy. While
the psych-professions speak of personal change and development, they fail to understand that such
change is only possible on the assumption of convictions and emotions that are fundamentally
spiritual in nature. This paper discusses the struggle every person undergoes in their attempts to
approach the internalized social ideal of normalcy in terms of the metaphor of the Biblical Jacob’s
ladder, where the ladder leading to Heaven is infinite and Jacob cannot possibly hope to reach its
end, but climbing the ladder is a spiritual task which marks all of the attributes traditionally
associated with the concept of ‘normalcy’ in the helping professions
Kant, Delez i transcendentalni empirizam
služi ne samo kao kritika Kantovog idealizma, već i klasičnog empirizma, koji, prema Delezu, ostaju suviše „empirični“.This paper will address Deleuze’s critique of Kant’s “transcendental idealism” from the standpoint of his “transcendental empiricism”. In the
first part of the paper, I will discuss the significance that empiricism holds
within Kant’s idealism, with a particular focus on the role of sensibility within
the Critique of Pure Reason. Based on this brief overview, I will demonstrate
in what sense Deleuze’s “empiricism” serves not only as a critique of Kant’s
idealism but also of empiricism, which, according to Deleuze, remains too
“empirical”
From Football to Life Champions: International training practices and the pedagogical role of the football trainers
The research behind this book aimed at obtaining data on general knowledge and the use of informal education for promoting positive social values through sports. The research focused on the issues of how football trainers perceive the pedagogical role of sports, and what are the ways to strengthen that role. Data were collected through the analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews with trainers of young football players in seven countries included in the research: Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and Portugal. By young footballers, we considered those under 16 years of age, for this is the age limit that generally separates younger, still chiefly amateur players, from the professional ones. The interviews were conducted in April and May 2023 and consisted of about twenty research questions divided into two parts. The first part of the questionnaire addressed the issues related to the trainers’ careers and education, while the second part focused on their ethics and values. The research sample consisted of coaches of younger age groups in football clubs of various ranks. Based on this, we can conclude that coaches of youth categories are mostly younger individuals (20-30 years old), often with 5-10 years of experience, and they are still in the process of professional development. Coaches consider this process of improvement as very important for the quality of their work with children. Upon analysing the data, we identified the six most relevant topics and provided a section for each in this book, as listed below.
The aim of this research was thus to conduct an in-depth analysis of how football coaches perceive the sports’ educational and pedagogical roles, as well as to identify potential ways to increase these roles. The research included desk analysis, semi-structured interviews with coaches, and two focus groups with parents of children who play football. The final manuscript was based on national studies conducted by researchers from seven countries (Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and Portugal) using written reports in English with the research results
Just Look like Us, or Look just like Us: The Measure of (Un)canniness
In the case of “the android provocation,” anthropomorphism that fixes our “place in the cosmos,” taken commonsensically and synoptically, shines through both ends: as humanity is making a machine of itself (cyborgization), it also decided to render the machine more human (androidization). In the first case we improved ourselves, in the other, we rendered something potentially better than ourselves, a mechanical robot, too human, forcing it to imitate us. In the past, we assimilated both God and nature, rendered them in our own image, and now, perhaps with greater prerogative, we imagine that our products must forever to conform to our image and our “logic.” The only antidote we can propose to this universal human strategy in encounter with otherness, is persistent effort, however unachievable in its entirety, to retreat from the always already anthropomorphizing perspective: a kind of retreat that would allow other forms of life, including one or maybe specially the one that are our “products”, to have their own measures and their own lives
The Business of Umbilical Cord Biobanking in Serbia: Biocapital(ism) and Symbolic Geographies of Health
The storage of stem cells from umbilical cord blood for private, individual purposes has emerged as a significant social phenomenon
over the past two decades. The technology of cord blood storage offers the potential for stem cells to be used in the treatment of various illnesses, creating new possibilities for medical intervention and
cure. The storage of stem cells obtained from post-birth umbilical
cord blood (UCB) has emerged as a significant area of scientific research and medical advancement
Terapijska kultura i proizvodnja subjektivnosti u neoliberalizmu
This article explores the relationship between neoliberalism and the
phenomena of “therapy culture”. We define therapy culture as a
consequence of the spread of ideas, discourses, and practices from
psychology and psychotherapy into various realms of society. Previous
studies, drawing from cultural sociology, Marxism, and governmentality
theory, have failed to adequately address how therapy culture integrates
subjectivity with the institutions of the neoliberal mode of regulation.
We begin with a historical overview of therapy culture’s evolution through
the twentieth century and its role in neoliberal economic reforms. Our
analysis then delves into conceptualizing the neoliberal mode of regulation,
emphasizing the role it gives to subjectivity. Finally, we propose a
theoretical framework integrating Foucault’s “technologies of the self”
and Lacan’s concept of “fantasy” to conceptualize the relationship between
neoliberalism and therapy culture. By relying on this framework, we will
conclude that therapy culture serves as a governmental technology
through which neoliberalism integrates subjectivity into the process of
25. jun 2024. Beograd. Knjiga apstrakata
In Dialogue with Roma Intellectuals
The concluding chapter of this edited volume reflects several critical aspects. First, while the political, historical, sociological, and gender analyses presented in individual contributions are undoubtedly significant, the pivotal moment lies in amplifying the voices of the Roma themselves ‒ their direct, almost raw expressions that emerge from the depths of lived experiences. Second, complementing the preceding works (except for Rubin Zemon’s contribution), we expand on the authenticity and representation of Roma societal positions by including narrative interviews with selected Roma intellectuals. Narrative interviews are particularly suitable for research contexts where power dynamics are imbalanced. This approach enriches the discussion of activism, religion, marginalization, and empowerment, which form the central themes of this volume
