Dissidents, disloyal citizens and partisans of emancipation: Feminist citizenship in Yugoslavia and post-Yugoslav spaces

    No full text
This paper aims to offer an alternative reading of the history of feminism in Yugoslavia and its successor states, relying on the concept of citizenship. Assuming that one could differentiate between three different citizenship regimes – the first framed by the socialist self-management state, the second by the nation-building processes and violent disintegration of the former state, and the last one by post-socialist, post-conflict transitional circumstances – the paper explores their impact on an uneven development of gender regimes and feminist activism. Seen as the model instance of activist citizenship, feminist activism is presented through three different phases in order to show how they, as well as the frameworks of their interpretation, change, changing also the meaning of feminism as a political force

The European Union and the Kosovo Issue: an International Ethical Perspective

    No full text
The subject of this paper is the stand taken by the European Union towards the complex and decades-long Kosovo issue viewed from an international ethical perspective. The author is trying to prove that the issue, such as it is, represents a continuity of an inconsistent attitude of most European states towards the Serbian state territorial issue, which attitude has been persisting for two decades. The stand taken by the author is that by acquiescing to the formation and stabilization of a newly-created state in the Serbian territory, the European Union has actually assumed the role of a medium of overseas attempts at attaining as painlessly as possible the goal of the secession of Kosovo, which territory has been proclaimed of special American national interest and hence, of a legitimate influence. During the process, it was also the unreserved choice of Serbia for a “European future” after October 5, 2000 that was taken into account. In the conclusion of this paper, the author points to possible consequences that the method of resolving this important state territorial issue could have on the stability of the Western Balkans in near or remote future

    Practicing Philosophy

    No full text
This volume presents the state of the art of philosophical practice worldwide from the perspectives of leading philosophical practitioners, both counselors and institutional consultants. Philosophical practice has developed in different directions in different parts of the world, with the focus in Europe and North America being mostly on client counseling and corporate consultancy, while in Asia it is more community-based and more closely aligned with psychotherapy. In all cases, philosophical practitioners strive to transcend the boundaries of academic philosophy and reach out to the public, to corporations, to the policy makers, to the medical, legal and many other professions. The chapters of this book illustrate both the breadth of philosophical practice and its various methodological directions, while, at the same time, showing how philosophy can be relevant to everyday life, not just for individuals, but for the economy, the government, international organizations, the helping and therapeutic professions, and the educational system. The volume is primarily a companion for students of applied philosophy on all levels, as well as for modern psychotherapists, educational professionals and academics. It is designed to support a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in philosophy and applied psychology, ranging from ancient ethics to philosophical practice sui generis, or to the philosophy of psychology

Zwischen Konstitution und Interprétation: Identitat als Geschichte

    No full text

Ethical Aspect of Social Control: Contemporary Discourse on Integrity of Institutions, Corruption, and Organised Crime

Sagledavanje etičkog aspekta zauzima centralno mesto u odlučivanju koje uključuje diskrecionu moć, silu i pravni postupak. U okviru savremenih krivično–pravnih sistema, etika je osnov odlučivanja i u pitanjima rukovođenja i u sferi politike kažnjavanja, odn. odlučivanja o prevenciji, kažnjavanju i rehabilitaciji. Ethical considerations are central to decisions involving discretion, force, and due process. Within contemporary criminal justice systems, ethics is germane to most management and policy decisions relating to punishment and is the rationale used in making these decisions, such as whether to rehabilitate, deter, or impose just deserts. Despite that contemporary crime reduction approach is a concept which cuts across policy areas, ethics remains to be the fundamental aspect of criminal justice and social control. That said, the research outlined in this article provides a starting point to address the fundamental obstacles placed in the path of crime prevention and for future alternative constructions policies in this area, in Serbia. The paper offers an analysis of contemporary crime control policy trends as outlined in strategic initiatives aiming at crime control, integrity building, and advancement of ethical competencies have contributed to the effectiveness of the criminal justice system. By illustrating the ways in which contemporary social control and ethics are interconnected and interdependent, the author is focusing well–being as it is conceptualised in the tradition of the social constructionism that implies that well–being is a product of the specific overall context of one’s life. Finally, the author points out that in the most developed countries such as the USA, Canada and the EU, as well as the most influential international organisations such as the UN and the OECD, the development and evaluation of public policies on the basis of well–being monitoring is already an established practice

Cyborg Tales: The Reinvention of the Human in the Information Age

    No full text
The emerging technological developments across various scientific fields have brought about radical changes in the ways we perceive and define what it means to be human in today’s highly technologically oriented society. Advancements in robotics, AI research, molecular biology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, medicine, etc., are mostly still in an experimental phase but it is likely that they will become a part of our daily experience. However, human enhancement and emergence of autonomous artificial beings have long been a part of futures imagined in SF and cyberpunk. While focusing on the phenomenon of cyborg as a product of both social reality and fiction, this chapter will attempt to offer a new perspective on selected SF and cyberpunk narratives by treating them not only as fictions but as theories of the future as well. Furthermore, selected examples of the existing real-life cyborgs will show that SF narratives are not merely limited to the scope of imagination but are a constituent part of lived experience, thus blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction
