Natural Goodness and the Political Form of Human Life

    No full text
Ethical Naturalism attempts to explain the objective normativity effective in human practices by reference to the relation between a living individual and the life-form it exhibits. This explanation falls short in the case of human beings (i) - not merely because of their essential rationality, but because the idea of normativity implicit in practice is dependent on the form of normativity’s being made explicit (2). I argue that this explicit form of normativity’s force and claim - the law in general - implies a tension between an explicit norm’s claim to absoluteness and the particularity of the situational case it is applied to. This tension may seem to produce an inherent violence corrupting the very idea of objective normativity inherent in the human form of life (3); in fact, it shows that the human form of life is essentially political. That the human form of life is essentially political does not contradict the idea of objective normativity - provided that this objectivity is not derived from a conception of “natural goodness”, but rather from the actuality of human practice and its principle, justice (4)

Hegel's Logic as the Exposition of God from the End of the World

    No full text
The article attempts to reconstruct the logical space within which, at the beginning of Hegel’s Logic, “being”and “nothing” are entitled to emerge and receive their names. In German Idealism, the concept of “being” is linked to the form of a proposition; Fichte grounds a new truth-value on the absolute thesis of the “thetical judgement”. And the articles first thesis claims that Hegel couldn’t have placed “being”at the beginning of this great system, if the ground of its logical space had not been laid out by precisely those shifts of German Idealism that posited the ontological function of the judgement. At the same time, the abstract negation, the absence of a relation and sufficient reason between “being” and “nothing”, reveals a structure of an irreducibly dual beginning. The logical background of this original duality could be constituted by the invention of the “transcendental inter-subjectivity” in German Idealism, manifested, for instance, in Hegel’s life-and-death struggle of two self-consciousnesses. The second thesis therefore suggests that “being” and “nothing” are elements of the logical space, established in concreto in a social situation of (at least) two subjects one of whom poses an affirmative statement and the other negates it abstractly. From here, one could draw out the coordinates of a sphere by the name of “public”whose structure is defined by the invalidation of two basic laws of thought, the law of non-contradiction and the principle of sufficient reason. The article shows how only the statements capable of absorbing negation, of sustaining a co-existence of affirmation and its symmetrical, abstract negation, can climb the ladder of public perceptibility and social impact

"Taking the Human out of Human Rights" Human Rights or Group Rights?

    No full text
What interest me are the reasons why “human” or “human rights” could be important or possibly most important in constituting a group (hence the introduction of the complicated word “group” and “group right(s)” in the subtitle). If I had to justify the existence of the latest debates on nature, justification and universality of human rights, on their distinction from other normative standards, on the philosophy and (legal) foundation of human rights, on “Human Rights without (or with) Foundations” (Raz, Tasioulas, Besson), then I would immediately conclude that this “process of grandiose concretization” of a complete fabrication is far from over. Despite the innumerable pacts and international conventions established after World War II, the slew of obligations to which states have agreed in the last few decades, the establishment of rights to secession or humanitarian intervention it is as if the constitution of classification of basic human rights and their universality is far from over

Transformation of gender, sexuality and citizenship in South East Europe

    No full text
This collection of essays was conceived gradually and in many phases, between Scotland and different parts of the former Yugoslavia, during the course of 2012 and 2013. The bulk of the work has been carried out within the research project “The Europeanisation of Citizenship in the Successor States of the Former Yugoslavia” (CITSEE) at the University of Edinburgh. This ERC-funded project led by Professor Jo Shaw and Dr. Igor Štiks has been established to explore changes in citizenship regimes which occurred after the break-up of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, with special attention being paid to the influences of the EU accession process on the new states of South East Europe. The editors of this special issue – Oliwia Berdak, Chiara Bonfiglioli, Katja Kahlina and Adriana Zaharijević – were members of a cluster of researchers focused on issues of gender and sexuality within the project, which had the aim of investigating transformations in gender and citizenship regimes from a comparative perspective. We wanted to shed light on the different ways in which the categories of gender and sexuality at the same time inform and draw on larger socio-political processes. The processes of democratisation, post-conflict reconstruction, and transformation from socialist to capitalist political economy, which have influenced shifting notions of citizenship in the post-Yugoslav space, were especially under scrutiny

Romanticizing or romantic denial of enlightenment?

    No full text
The article argues that early Romanticism, articulating its own view, addresses to the Enlightenment an “aesthetic” remark which be traced deep into the twentieth century. The author of the work found it, after Schlegel and his school, not only in Weber ‘s diagnosis of institutionalized rationality of Western civilization, and in the Horkheimer’s and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment and the critique of the goal-oriented or instrumental reason of modernity that followed, but in a different way, also in Foucault, Böhme brothers, and even in postmodern philosophy and neopragmatism. It is concluded that all these orientations share detection of the lack od self-enlightenment of the Enlightenment and, consequently, the lack of its self-referential correction. These unaccounted costs of violations the Enlightenment committed to its “other”, irreversibly or somehow still recoverable, undermines its original critical and emancipatory program

Un Peacekeeping Missions in the Regions of Ex-Yugoslavia and the Problem of Impartiality of the International Peace Mediation: the Case Study of Peacekeeping Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina

In her paper the author takes as a theme the activity of the UN international peacekeeping missions in the regions of ex-Yugoslavia from the beginning of the nineties in the past century until now. She starts from the viewpoint that their international-ethical sense contained in maintenan ce and promotion of peace, i.e. reducing the possibility of renewing the conflicts which preceded their establishment. The adherence of the international peace mediation to that principle is examined by the author on the example of the engagement of peacekeeping missions in the regions of the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Relying on a thorough analysis of their characteristics, she concludes that by advocating the affirmation of the spirit instead of the letter of Dayton, the international community led by USA, made thorough revision instead of consistent implementation of Dayton agreements, while the UN Peace Mission in that endeavour played the role of key and unavoidable agent. As such, by its activity on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Mission was, the author believes, rather in the function of solving the crisis in favour of one of its parties preferred from the beginning, than in the service of its consistent and permanent pacification, by which it disrupted one of the key internationalethical principles of peace mediation as such – impartiality, i.e. neutrality in relation to all confronted parties, and instead of minimalising the possibility of their repeated confrontation, created strong preconditions for it

Biopolitik und die transzendentale Fragestellung. Über die Bedingungen der Möglichkeit der Macht

    No full text
