Hedgehog’s Home: Imagining a Better World
An overview of the socio-political conflicts that accompanied the removal of Hedgehog’s Home (Branko Ćopić, 1949) from the Croatian list of compulsory primary school
reading depicts the post-Yugoslav political context which is largely lead by processes
of nation building and erasing of socialist and anti-fascist ideas from school curricula.
The text explores different possibilities of the relationship that children’s literature
can take with the world. Some guidelines are offered for a contemporary radical reading of Hedgehog’s Home as a starting point for political imagination, which in turn is
applied to the paradigms that led to Ćopić’s expulsion from schools in the first place
Global Influence of the Contemporary American Far Right: A Case Study of Serbia
The process of globalization in recent years has ignited an unprecedented level of far
right transatlantic cooperation. Individuals and members of organizations from the United
States traveled to Europe intending to establish permanent relations with their ideological
cousins, while new ways of online communication enabled extreme right-wing organizations
to share ideas and methods of political activism and learn from each other. This phenomenon is
observable in Serbia even though bilateral relations with the United States are troubled by the
US-led NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. For this reason, anti-American feelings developed
among many Serbs, with the far right taking the most uncompromising attitude. Nevertheless,
the American far right has inspired and influenced right-wing and even mainstream political
organizations in Serbia. The first part of this article examines how extreme right-wing groups
in Serbia became exposed to American far-right ideas over the Internet. It also shows how
more recent connections have been established between the Serbian far right and alt-right
figures from the United States. The second part will examine the effect of the populist right
wing movement created by Donald Trump on Serbian mainstream politics. Trump’s non
interventionism in his first term awakened optimism that better relations between Serbia and
the United States are possible while influencing Serbian narratives, ideology, and political
practic
State-Sponsored Unhomeliness: Housing Precarity and Privatism in Serbian Social Housing Estates
This paper examines the lived realities of housing precarity within Ser- bia’s social housing estates, focusing on the concept of unhomeliness. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in two Serbian social housing estates, it explores how marginalized inhabitants navigate the erosion of stability, privacy, and living conditions. The findings reveal how systemic neglect and institu- tional failures compound vulnerabilities, fostering pervasive instability and al- ienation. Social housing, intended as a solution to housing needs, emerges as a paradoxical site where shelter is provided yet insecurity, unhomeliness and marginalization persist. Through the lens of unhomeliness, the analysis reveals the emotional and material toll of precarious housing, such as utility disconnec- tions, overcrowding, and structural neglect. The article situates unhomeliness as both a structural and experiential phenomenon, emphasizing how the erosion of welfare housing policies and lack of privacy undermine the basic functions of a “home.” Introducing the concept of precarious privatism, it sheds light on the tension between inhabitants’ efforts to create autonomy and dignity in their homes and the challenges they face. This analysis advances understanding of housing inequality and resilience among marginalized communities in post- socialist contexts, offering a critical perspective on the interplay between sys- temic neglect, individual agency, and the contested meanings of home
Development in regions with high mineral exploitation creates significant, predominantly negative changes in the local community and the environment. Within the framework of the MINIPART project – Improving Public Participation in Spatial Planning of Mining Areas (2024-2027, #7598, Science Fund of the RS), qualitative and quantitative methods, interviews, and focus groups were combined, a database was formed, and the website www.minipart.rs was created. Research was conducted to examine the perception of the local population in Bor and Majdanpek regarding participation in planning processes, focusing on their understanding, engagement, and attitudes toward certain participatory procedures. The goal is to determine the most suitable and acceptable methods of public participation and to develop recommendations for improving the existing practice
Deliberation Against Disinformation: Can Citizens’ Assemblies Contribute to Countering Disinformation and Improving Audience–Media Relations?
The news media has traditionally played a vital role in democratic societies by providing truthful, timely, and impartial information, enabling citizens to make informed political decisions (Schudson, 2001; Kovach & Rosenstiel, 2014). Over time, accountability mechanisms such as ethical codes, press councils, and ombudspersons have been implemented to penalize deviations from professional conduct, shaping public expectations about journalism.
With the proliferation of digital technologies, political information environments have become more democratized. Citizens no longer rely exclusively on traditional news outlets for political information, as they now have access to a broad range of alternative sources, including political leaders, bloggers, social media influencers, and fringe movements (Flew, 2020). While the diversification of information sources has enabled marginalized voices to be heard, it has also given rise to the rapid spread of disinformation, contributing to an epistemic crisis in contemporary democracies (Neuberger et al., 2023). The spread of false or misleading information represents a significant challenge to the democratic process.
Efforts to combat disinformation have centered on strategies such as fact-checking and media literacy—which require the involvement of professional journalism for effective and sustainable information strategies. The effectiveness of news media in fulfilling its normative role depends on an open and receptive audience, which is increasingly difficult to achieve. Many countries are experiencing declining trust in the media, rising news avoidance, and anti-press sentiment, which complicates citizens’ ability to differentiate between professional journalism and disinformation. In this context, combating disinformation requires addressing the deteriorating relationship between the media and the audience.
We argue that deliberation can play a crucial role in addressing disinformation and improving audience-media relations. Deliberation, which encourages reasoned, inclusive, and thoughtful discussions, can help citizens understand complex issues, evaluate arguments based on merit, and bridge the trust gap between the media and the public. By fostering a deliberative environment, citizens can develop the tools to critically engage with information, which is essential for combating disinformation.
To support our arguments, we draw on findings from a citizens’ assembly held in Serbia, involving 45 participants from diverse backgrounds. Over the course of two days, participants engaged in small-group discussions and plenary sessions with media experts and policymakers. The findings suggest that deliberation in the form of citizens’ assemblies can contribute to improved understanding of disinformation, reduce support for punitive measures, foster trust in professional media, particularly fact-checking organizations and self-regulatory mechanisms, and offer valuable insights into strategies for addressing information disorder

Digital Archives and Information Systems at the National Museum of Serbia (1992–2024)
This paper examines the development of digital archives and information systems at the National Museum of Serbia between 1992 and 2024. Particular attention is given to the digitization of collections and the creation of centralized databases (from the early Klio program and the Museum Information System of Serbia – MISS, through the parallel IMUS database, to the attempted establishment of the Unified Information System for Museums of Serbia – JISMS). The analysis highlights how digital archives have been shaped within a contradictory framework: on the one hand, efforts toward standardization, interoperability, and public accessibility, and on the other, chronic lack of resources, bureaucratic constraints, and institutional fragmentation. Metadata inconsistencies and the sustainability of digital formats are identified as central challenges. Attempts to provide public access, such as the Trezor internet platform or kultura.rs, remained incomplete or partial, while the function of digital databases has largely been confined to internal use by professionals. The archival dimension is further contextualized through theories of the information society and new museology, showing that digital archives function not only as tools of preservation and documentation but also as contested spaces where memorial, research, and communicative roles intersect. This raises broader questions about the role of museum archives in shaping the public sphere and enabling new approaches to cultural heritage.Međunarodna naučna konferencija "ADDA - Audiovizuelne, digitalne i druge arhive/Audiovisual, digital, and other archives" održana je od 22. do 24. oktobra 2025. godine u Državnom audiovizuelnom arhivu Srbije - Jugoslovenska kinoteka
Prometheus and Plato: On the Relationship Between Episteme and Techne
Liberalni perfekcionizam
