Who Trusts AI for Health Information? A Cross-National Survey on Trust Determinants in Four European Countries

    No full text
As generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems such as ChatGPT become increasingly popular sources of health information, understanding what shapes users’ trust in AI-generated health information (AI-HI) is essential. Despite growing use, little is known about how human- and source-related factors jointly influence trust across national contexts. Drawing on frameworks from AI trust and online health information research, this study used multi-group structural equation modeling with representative samples from Austria (N = 502), Denmark (N = 507), France (N = 498), and Serbia (N = 483) to predict trust in AI-HI and its effect on intention to use AI-HI. AI literacy and performance expectancy consistently increased trust across countries, while social norms and prior AI-HI experience showed smaller, context-dependent effects. Health literacy, personal innovativeness, effort expectancy, and surveillance risk perceptions were not significant. Informational risk perceptions had only a weak negative effect on trust, indicating that while concerns about inaccuracy can reduce confidence, they play a relatively minor role in shaping it. Trust strongly predicted intention to use AI-HI in all countries, with path-level effects largely stable across contexts. These findings suggest that trust in AI-HI is shaped more by digital capabilities, perceived utility, and social endorsement than by privacy concerns or health literacy. Future research should examine how digital literacy interventions and transparency standards can foster informed trust in these systems

The Birth of Revolutionary Fantasy – Enjoyment and The Intersubjective Structure of Social Engagement

    No full text
This article seeks to conceptualize the process through which forms of subjectivity and social relations that aim to transform dominant social structures emerge during periods of crisis. We focus on the interrelationship between discursive and affective processes in shaping political subjectivities oriented towards social change. We understand social structures as discursive formations, drawing on Lacan’s concept of the symbolic order and Laclau’s theory of hegemony. Social structures consist of differential elements whose meaning is determined through a particular code, unified by a “master signifier” that organizes the symbolic field and assigns meaning to its components. According to Laclau, symbolic orders are not grounded in necessity but arise from contingent historical circumstances, rendering them inherently unstable and incomplete. Hegemony operates by masking this contingency: through the articulation of a master signifier, the symbolic order is presented as necessary, thereby concealing its constructed origins. In Lacanian terms, the master signifier corresponds to the big Other—the symbolic order itself, as it is represented to the subject. The symbolic order is inherently marked by a lack, not due to internal inconsistency, but because it lacks metaphysical foundation. As Laclau argues, the master signifier is established through a “decision” at a specific moment, which founds a social order and grants it temporary coherence. This decision is enacted by the subject, who mediates between competing symbolic configurations and forms a chain of equivalence among discursive elements by positing a new master signifier. In doing so, the subject plays a constitutive role in rearticulating the social field in response to the disintegration of a previous hegemony. We interpret moments of crisis as instances of “dislocation” (Laclau), when the symbolic order confronts its limits and reveals its contingent foundations. These moments coincide with the subject’s recognition of the lack within the big Other—a lack that echoes the subject’s own and opens a space for political intervention. In this space, the symbolic order can be apprehended not as fixed or natural, but as a product of the subject’s own discursive practice. To theorize this process further, we draw on Freud’s notion of group formation, based on a shared libidinal investment in a common ego ideal, and Laclau’s concept of myth, understood as an emergent discursive space that represents the dislocated elements in a new way. Subject formation, in this context, is conceived as a political act that mediates between the collapse of a hegemonic structure and the emergence of a new one. By articulating a new master signifier, the subject reconfigures the symbolic order, instituting a new, though still contingent, social totality

Između vere i nacije: pokret Mladi muslimani 1939-1990

Knjiga Između vere i nacije: pokret Mladi muslimani 1939–1990 predstavlja sveobuhvatnu istorijsko-sociološku studiju o nastanku, razvoju i transformaciji pokreta Mladi muslimani u Bosni i Hercegovini, od njegovog osnivanja uoči Drugog svetskog rata do političke artikulacije njegovih istaknutih pripadnika u periodu uvođenja višestranačja. Polazeći od činjenice da je reč o jednoj od najmanje istraženih organizacija iz vremena bivše Jugoslavije, knjiga nastoji da popuni važnu istraživačku prazninu. Osnovni cilj studije jeste analiza identitetskih i ideoloških trajektorija Mladih muslimana: od religijski inspirisanog, panislamistički orijentisanog aktivizma ka prihvatanju etnonacionalne ideologije krajem 1980-ih i početkom 1990-ih. Autor pokazuje kako je deo nekadašnjih pripadnika pokreta, u kontekstu raspada Jugoslavije i političke liberalizacije, načinio radikalan diskurzivni i politički zaokret, učestvujući u osnivanju Stranke demokratske akcije 1990. godine.

Theorizing Digital Methods: Digital Sociology’s Potential Anchor?

    No full text
Given the complexities of digital society and phenomena associated to digital age, digital sociology has been emerging as a vital subdiscipline within sociology - but not without challenges. We begin by briefly drawing on bibliometric analysis and controversy mapping of the theoretical foundations of digital sociology from the mid-2010s, thus underscoring the “polite divergence” that exists in interaction between different authors and their respective theoretical approaches. Consequently, we argue that the lack of controversy and constructive conflict in theoretical approaches between authors could result in the epistemological sterility of digital sociology. The main objective of this presentation is to examine and theorize its methodological grounds. As a result of the “crisis of an empirical sociology” proposed by Savage and Burrows and the emergence of digitally mediated communication on the internet, there has been an uptake in the application of digital methods in social research in the last decade. This aspect of digital sociology has the potential to be a crucial element in the further development of the discipline. In this regard, we aim to implement controversy mapping of digital methods debate and their respective authors. As controversies are the most fruitful areas of knowledge production, this could be the basis of the argument for the importance of digital sociology and its future development. We begin with a bibliometric analysis of the theoretical and reflexive work being done on digital methods. Utilizing Andrew Abbott’s concept of “fractal distinctions,” we situate and map the most prolific directions and branches of digital methods, identifying the most fertile fields of controversy. Finally, we explore the potential challenges and implications arising from the asymmetric development of theoretical frameworks and methodological solutions within digital sociology, considering their impact on the discipline’s future

The Relationship Between Ends and Means in Environmental Policy: Pragmatic Holism as a Critique of Productivism and Technological Determinism

    No full text
This paper explores the relationship between ends and means through the lens of classical American pragmatism, with a particular focus on the philosophy of John Dewey. It critiques the dominant productivist discourse, which views technology as a universal tool for achieving predefined goals such as economic growth, and examines the limitations of this approach in the context of contemporary ecological challenges. The author advocates for pragmatic holism as an alternative theoretical framework, wherein ends and means are not hierarchically separated but form a dynamic continuum shaped by specific problematic situations. Emphasis is placed on the importance of reflection, deliberation, the principle of inclusivity in democracy, and an experimental approach in shaping public policies related to ecological transition

Mogućnost građanske otpornosti: Postavljanje nejednakosti na pozorišnu scenu u stigmatizovanom susedstvu

    No full text
Currently, Sweden is a society marked by growing anti-immigrant sentiments and residential stigmatization. As a result, the symbolic and social gaps between in-groups and out-groups are widening. Consequently, interactions that could foster empathy and solidarity across differences have become increasingly fragile. However, artistic initiatives that counter anti-civil forces are emerging. This article focuses on theater and social inclusion by examining three interconnected elements: meaning, communication, and social change—and how they can serve as a form of civil resilience through critical reflection and recognition processes. Thus, we illuminate how theater can become a venue for social inclusion for a young, ethnically diverse audience by activating symbolic structures of meaning and emotions that recognize the inequalities present within marginalized groups and their experiences. This is achieved by investigating the professional and dramaturgical strategies employed by an artistic team establishing a new theater in a stigmatized neighborhood north of Stockholm and their efforts toward social cohesion. The analysis identifies dramaturgical strategies involving emotions, authenticity, and bodies, along with other professional strategies that work transformatively within the theater and the community, resulting in theatrical communication that allows for psycho-social identification for the audience and critical self-analysis for theater professionals, thereby holding potential for civil resilience.Trenutno, švedsko društvo karakteriše porast anti-imigrantskih sentimenata i stigmatizacija naselja.

Being or Becoming Political? Performative Citizenship in Central and Eastern Europe

    No full text
The chapter explores the potential of performative citizenship in post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe to challenge dominant ethnonational and ethnocentric citizenship regimes and agendas by generating new sites of social expression, new forms of civic participation, and alternative modes of political being. By examining examples of performative citizenship from the Western Balkans region, and focusing on citizens’ attempts to politicize issues – and their relation to them – on their own terms, the chapter offers a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics between being and becoming political on the European periphery

Bor and Majdanpek – Report on the Results of the Survey Research

    No full text
This report presents the findings of a survey conducted within the MINIPART project – Improving Participation in Spatial Planning of Mining Areas. The survey was carried out in the City of Bor and the Municipality of Majdanpek on a random, two-stage sample of 300 respondents. The purpose of the research was to explore local residents’ perceptions of participation in planning processes, focusing on their behaviour, understanding, engagement, and attitudes toward specific participatory methods and procedures. The aim was to identify which participation methods are most suitable and acceptable to the local population. The results indicate a significant level of disappointment and distrust among respondents toward all actors and participatory processes. Only a small number of participants had taken part in public hearings. The most common reason for non-participation was the belief that individual voices are not heard and do not influence outcomes. Respondents expressed a preference for using the internet to obtain information and share opinions. Furthermore, favoured participation methods tended to be those that respondents were already familiar with, particularly those involving face-to-face communication. These findings will be compared in the following stages of the research with expert opinions on participatory methods and procedures. The final outcome will include recommendations for improving participation practices in the mining areas of Serbia. The insights gained are expected to apply to other contexts as well
