Tvrđava pod opsadom: narativi o etničkim sukobima i diskriminaciji među mađarskom omladinom u Vojvodini

    No full text
This paper analyzes narratives of ethnic conflict among Hungarian and Serbian youth in Vojvodina. These experiences are narrated by Hungarian young people from Mali Iđoš in the Central Bačka region in the interviews with the author of the paper, and the excerpts of the transcripts are analyzed according to the Labovian socio-linguistic scheme. It argues that narrative structure varies according to the interlocutor’s gender; however, all narratives demonstrate similarity in terms of positioning the protagonists of such events as committing subjects and suffering objects. In addition, the narratives are highly script-like, which suggests a lack of diversity in the available discursive frames for narrating the experience of conflicts perceived as ethnically motivated. The most common script, which the interlocutors of this research use as well, constructs and justifies ethnic groups as simultaneously in confrontation with and isolated from each other, linguistically, culturally and geographically, and articulates interethnic experiences as a threat.

Ciljano ubijanje dronovima? Stari argumenti, nove tehnologije

    No full text
The question of how to contend with terrorism in keeping with our preexisting moral and legal commitments now challenges Europe as well as Israel and the United States: how do we apply Just War Theory and International Law to asymmetrical warfare, specifically to our counter terrorism measures? What can the classic moral argument in Just and Unjust Wars teach us about contemporary targeted killings with drones? I begin with a defense of targeted killing, arguing for the advantages of pin pointed attacks over any alternative measure available for combatting terrorism. Assuming the legitimacy of killing combatants in wartime, I argue, there is nothing wrong, and in fact much that is right, with targeting particular terrorists selected by name, as long as their assassinations can be reasonably expected to reduce terrorist hostilities rather than increase it. Subsequently, I offer some further thoughts and comments on the use of remotely piloted aircrafts to carry out targeted killings, and address the various sources for discomfort with this practice identified by Michael Walzer and others.

    Politička moralnost i neutralnost

    No full text
The article gives the reasons why a distinction between political morality and ethical conceptions needs to be drawn, as well as the reasons for which political liberalism is a substantial moral conception, and as such in tension with certain understandings of the neutrality. Further, the text analyzes the definition of personality through capacity for action (above all ethical). Recognition of this capacity is necessary, but not sufficient to attribute to a person a special status from the standpoint of political morality, since individuals also must be capable to coordinate their ethical actions with moral principles of others. Further, the text critiques Charles Larmore’s moral grounding of the theory of justice on respect of persons by arguing that the concept of respect should be considered as part of the complex interrelationships with other moral concepts, such as equality. In this way, neutrality regarding content of respect, as well as neutrality regarding capacity for ethical action turns out to be insufficient.U tekstu se navode razlozi zbog kojih je neophodno povući distinkciju između političke moralnosti i etičkih koncepcija, kao i razlozi zbog kojih se politički liberalizam ispostavlja kao supstancijalna moralna koncepcija, pri čemu se javlja napetost između nje i određenih shvatanja neutralnosti.

Ethical and operational particularities of offensive dronе technologies in the international relations realm

    No full text
The paper presents and discusses some of the most recent and influential arguments in favour of the increasingly liberal use of predator drones for military actions short of war. The author finds most of these arguments fairly weak and lacking capacity to address the fundamental ethical aspects of the technological transition of warfare towards the increasing use of predator drones for military assassinations. The paper concludes with the idea that the damage the use of dronesinflicts on the army and its reception in society, as well as to the inherited social structure itself, is so great that the use of drones is not a cultural advancement in warfare, but rather a drastic step back

Songs, Myths, Identity and Territory: Serbian Kosovo Epic as “Invented Tradition

    No full text
This article offers critical re-examination of the recent scholarship on the socalled Kosovo myth. This popular oral and literary tradition surrounding the Battle of Kosovo that the Serbs fought against the Turks in 1389 traditionally occupied central space in Serbian national narrative. By revisiting the formation of the Kosovo epic in the collections of Vuk Karadžić, the founder of modern Serbian culture, I trace his role in making Kosovo the foundational myth of the whole Serbian nation from the nineteenth-century surge in Romantic nationalism onwards. In particular, I scrutinize Karadžić’s editorial procedures as parts of a process of cultural inscription representing a cultural transformation that made the Kosovo epic an instance of the invention of national tradition in Eric Hobsbawm’s terms
