Borba s kontinuitetima: istorijski kontekst Filosofije palanke 1969. godine
Članak analizira složen politički, kulturni i društveni kontekst Srbije tokom 1969. godine, koja je bila na razmeđu modernizacije i jačanja nacionalističkih kontinuiteta. U fokusu su paralelni procesi: radikalna kritika palanačkog mentaliteta koju oblikuje Radomir Konstantinović u Filosofiji palanke i rastuća nacionalistička mobilizacija kroz institucije, kulturu, jezik i medije, predvođena Dobricom Ćosićem, Srpskom književnom zadrugom i crkvenim krugovima. Kroz suprotstavljene pozicije reformskog rukovodstva Srbije, oličenog u Marku Nikeziću i Latinki Perović, naspram konzervativno‑nacionalističkih tendencija, tekst prikazuje kako se borba protiv „kontinuiteta“ nacionalizma prelamala kroz pitanja jezika, položaja Srba u Jugoslaviji, kosovske politike i simboličkih sporova poput Njegoševog mauzoleja. Uprkos pritiscima, 1969. je obeležila i snažna kulturna pluralizacija — crni talas, BITEF, Kosa, BEMUS — čineći ovu godinu prelomnim trenutkom sukoba između modernosti i palanačke zatvorenosti
Georges Florovsky and St Justin Popović: Brothers in arms for the Neopatristic Synthesis
The aim of the paper is to offer an overview of the long-lasting friendship between
Georges Florovsky and St Justin Popović, as well as of their common project to build
an Orthodox theological synthesis on the basis of the patristic tradition. The paper
focuses on three periods from Florovsky’s and Popović’s lives, from late 1910 and to
early 1920, from late 1920s to late 1930s, and finally on 1940s. I argue that in the first
period both authors developed their theological visions relying on Solovyov and
Florensky, on the one hand, and in opposition to the ecclesial nationalism of the
Slavophiles and conservative Orthodox hierarchs, on the other hand. Further, I
investigate how during the late 1920s and 1930s both authors searched for an
Orthodox synthesis mostly in dialogue with their Orthodox predecessors, especially
Solovyov, Florensky and Bulgakov, as well as the modern western philosophical
tradition. The focus will shift then to the 1940s, which was characterized by frequent
meetings between Florovsky and Popović in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. I argue that in this
period the Church Fathers became for both authors the golden standard for Orthodox
theology, and the idea of the neo-patristic synthesis developed in the full scale.Special Issue: Philosophy in Neopatristics. New Figures and New Interpretations (Guest Editor: Teresa Obolevich
What is in a label: Effects of labeling on the preference for plant-based products
Our study investigated the effects of three labels on the preference for plant-based products: plant-based, vegan, and Lenten, referring to products appropriate to consume during religious fasting. We conducted two preregistered experiments to measure the effects of labeling on product preference (Study 1, N = 290) and actual tasting preferences (Study 2, N = 251) in a predominantly meat-eating European society (Serbia). We did not find statistically significant effects of labels on the preference for plant-based products in Study 1. In Study 2, the labels affected the preference for plant-based cheese, with Lenten and plant-based labels being slightly preferred over the vegan label. Labeling did not affect the tasting preference for plant-based milk or prosciutto. Across the two studies, the plant-based products were consistently favorably rated, regardless of the label. Plant-based milk emerged as the most preferred product in both studies. We also found that previous experience with plant-based products, as well as speciesism - endorsement of animal exploitation - consistently predicted preferences for plant-based products, irrespective of the label. These findings underscore the influence of labeling on some plant-based products while also revealing the overall minor impact of labeling on consumer preferences. We further discuss the absence of adverse effects of vegan labeling
Građansko društvo IV: Demokratska solidarnost i ne-građanska potpora građanskoj sferi
A defining feature of what Alexander calls Civil Society (CS) III is its separation—analytic and empirical—from the putatively non-civil spheres of the family, schools, and associational forms which lack public communicative intent and comprise CS I. While critical to the progress of CST as a research program, with this separation and delimited conception, civil sphere theorists may miss a key insight of CS I regarding the mutual interdependence of spheres. Although civil codes, institutions, and interactional practices may have their “natural” home in the civil sphere, their emotional and normative force, and their survival over time, depend upon their ancillary institutionalization in non-civil spheres. Families are key to democratic socialization. Schools cultivate democratic dispositions through citizen-formation, inducting students into their nation’s democratic traditions. And through civic action and civic interaction orders prejudices are challenged, and citizens become open to new forms of incorporation. Using the case of contemporary American democratic culture, we survey scholarship on political polarization and social capital’s decline in the US, and argue that the discord characteristic of contemporary America’s civil sphere arises, in part, from these non-civil spheres. That is, the erosion of democratic solidarity and basic norms of civility originate in democratic deficits in those non-civil spheres that scaffold the civil sphere.
Juveniles and Organized Crime - Social and Historical-Pedagogical Perspectives on Prevention
The phenomenon of juvenile delinquency in contemporary society is increasingly associated
with organized criminal groups, which use children as perpetrators of criminal
acts due to their perception that they are less susceptible to detection and sanctions. This
trend, which includes the role of juveniles in drug trafficking and money laundering, indicates
the need for a comprehensive approach to prevention. The paper examines the
phenomenon of juvenile delinquency through a historical-pedagogical framework, tracing
the issue from the period of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, through the socialist period, to
contemporary challenges. Special emphasis is placed on the contribution of Antun Skala
to the development of special pedagogy and his approach to the analysis of social factors
that influence the formation of juvenile delinquents. Through a synthesis of pedagogical,
social, and criminological perspectives, the text analyzes how historical approaches can
contribute to contemporary preventive strategies, with the aim of a more efficient response
to the problem of juvenile crime within organized criminal activities. The authors
propose specific measures and social policies that can reduce the participation of juveniles
in criminal groups and improve prevention in line with contemporary social challenges
A Cautious Pragmatic Amendment to the Vitruvian Paradigm
Vitruvius’s convenient firmitas, utilitas, venustas triad has
been employed since the Renaissance to encompass the goals of architec
ture. But these terms can be questioned: they were primarily useful to
Vitruvius in ordering his book and do not encompass all that was at is
sue for him and remains so for us today. Architecture is a discipline that
displays tacit knowledge, where best practice can only be shown, not de
scribed, accounting for the clumsiness of expression for which Vitruvius
is often criticised. I argue that the conventional triad undervalues loca
tion or context and, whereas firmitas and utilitas (suitably expanded)
may be measurable, and styles and even meanings can be discussed, ve
nustas—understood as a demand for beauty in the abstract—is more like
an ethical requirement. We cannot blame Vitruvius for the fact that his
attractive tri-partite framework was adopted by Alberti and continues to
be used. But we can be permitted to think again whether there might be
a more appropriate set of terms that takes better account of the full com
plexity of the practice and interpretation of architecture
Requiem for a Relic: The Case of the Great Northern Grain Elevator
Works of architecture are frequently valued for the distinctive profiles they lend to a cityscape, and when beautiful buildings
fall into disrepair, reference to their aesthetic merit can support efforts
for preservation and restoration. However, many historically important
structures, such as industrial buildings, do not possess obvious aesthetic
virtues, in the sense that their appearance is not immediately appealing.
Consider an object such as the gigantic Great Northern grain elevator,
which was built in 1897 and stood near the western terminus of the Erie
Canal. This last of the “brick box” elevators was demolished in 2023 after
preservation efforts mobilized on its behalf failed. It was not obviously
beautiful, but its historical position conferred significant aesthetic merits
